The Differences and Comparisons of Ethics
When we think of ethics, we think of two words, good or bad. Through the history of our world, philosophers and scientists have devised several thoughts that include a system that we are able to use to determine who and what is good or bad.
As a population, we can use these different terms and types of ethical theory to determine which style, form, or behavior of ethics fits with our beliefs and culture. Some of these different types of theories include virtue theory, utilitarianism, and deontological ethics. Although these all fall into the category of a theory of ethics and may seem to be similar, they are also very different.
When looking at the virtue theory of ethics, we can see that the term character can be used in the place of virtue. According to Ben (2007), the virtue theory has roots that reach back to the time of Plato. Plato, and the virtue theory, suggest that all men and women would be happy if they would only grasp the eternal Form of the Good as his or her criterion.
In contrast to the virtue theory, the utilitarianism theory suggests that a person present or have behavior of good for the entire team or group. One of the problems associated with this theory according to Boylan (2009) is that for any moral theory to work in a group, the group must first come to some terms of a general agreement. Knowing this and thinking on this statement, there are few times in my life where a team or group of people come together on any idea and agree on its entirety.
The deontological theory suggest a contrasting idea to the other two theories, it suggests that there are features within the actions of the individual that determine whether it is right or not. The first theory was about the character of the individual, the second theory was about a group of individuals, this theory involves the actions of a

Code of Ethics Comparison

...Code of Ethics Comparison Abstract This paper is a comparison between the codes of ethics of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC). This paper aims to present the similarities and differences between the two codes of ethics. There are two main sections on this paper. The first section presents the general similarities and differences of the two codes of ethics. The second section presents the similarities and differences of the two codes of ethics on three specific areas: Confidentiality, Sexual Intimacies and Informed Consent. The author used the codes of ethics of both organizations in the process of comparing and contrasting. The general comparison reveals that the codes of ethics of the two organizations apply to the same profession but they differ in the foundation upon which their codes of ethics were crafted. The comparison on three specific areas reveals similarities in contents but differ in depth and details. Introduction The code of ethics is the heart and soul of any business or professional organization. This code of ethics sets the standard to which all business or professional activities of all of its members are measured. This code is the ultimate guide on how members of the organization should act in connection with the performance of their duties and obligations. Likewise, it is the basis upon which disputes can be settled or decisions are to be made. This is the protection of each member...

Therefore, I choose to explore the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics with the intention of conducting a comparison analysis of both documents. Comparisons of Ethical Theories

...Comparisons of Ethical Theories Christa D. Phillips ETH/316 July 5, 2012 Shane Howell Comparisons of Ethical Theories Utilitarianism The philosophy of Utilitarianism basically stresses that any action must provide the most helpful outcome for the maximum number of individuals possible. Utilitarianism may be referred to as “the greatest good for the greatest number” or “greater good” ethics (Boylan, 2009). Basically, when utilitarianism is useful to any decision the outcome should end with appeal to the largest number of affected individuals. In this form of ethics it is commonly seen in business and capitalist environments (Boylan, 2009). Virtue Theory The next theory of ethics is virtue ethics focusing on the individual’s personality rather than the rules or the consequences of any action taken. In this theory it examines whether or not the person is of good standing or good character rather than what decisions are made (Garrett, 2005). This does not mean that rules, intentions, consequences, and outcome are not important but rather that the ethical standard of the individual are based on his or her demonstration of good intentions, virtue, and ethics through the actions they take (Garrett, 2005). Deontology Deontology is different than virtue it emphasizes the duty for action based on planned rules, and principles. Doing well a making the right decision or action is of main point in this theory of ethics. The difference between deontology and utilitarianism is...

Ethics Comparison Essay

...Ethics comparison essay Michael Njus ETH316 June 23, 2014 Aubrey Weekes Ethics comparison essay INTRODUCTION This paper will take a look at three different theories of ethics. The three theories are deontological, utilitarianism and virtue theory. The basics of ethics theories are similar in the fact that they are all a set of rules that govern what is deemed to be right or wrong, the following will define each and attempt to point out some differences in the theories. Deontological ethics, are ethical theories that place special emphasis on the relationship between duty and the morality of human actions. Deontology (Greek deon, “duty,” and logos, “science”) consequently focuses on logic and ethics (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2014) Utilitarianism is a doctrine that the useful is the good and that the determining consideration of right conduct should be the usefulness of its consequences; specifically:  a theory that the aim of action should be the largest possible balance of pleasure over pain or the greatest happiness of the greatest number. (Merriam Webster, 2014) Virtue ethics is a broad term for theories that emphasize the role of character and virtue in moral philosophy rather than either doing one’s duty or acting in order to bring about good consequences. (Athanassoulis, 2014) While the aim of all three theories is that we should strive to do what is right, the length that we should go to and who they would affect is the main difference in the three. The main difference...

Ethics Comparison and Similarities

...Ethics Comparisons and Similarities ETH/316 December 18, 2012 Abstract This paper will identify similarities and differences between the virtue theory, utilitarianism, and deontological ethics. This paper will also highlight how each theory addresses ethics and morality differently. In this paper, personal experience will be used to explain the relationship between virtue, values, and moral concepts as they relate to one of the three principles. Ethics Comparisons and Similarities Virtue is referred to as a character ethic. It theorizes that in the life we live we should try to cultivate excellence in everything that we do as well as in everything that others do. In fact, the Greek word for “virtue” translates to “excellence.” Virtues are considered to be both moral and non-moral (Boylan, 2009). Morally, what makes a good person? (Boylan, 2009). Non-morally, what does a person do to be the best he or she can be? As a personal example I am reminded of my youth during middle school and high school. As a student and participant in concert band and marching band, I would practice and continuously train myself to be a better musician. The more I practiced the music the correct way, the better I became. I strove for excellence. This is a good non-moral example. Utilitarianism is a theory that means an action is morally right when that action produces more total utility for a group than any other alternative (Boylan, 2009). As an example...

A Comparison of Ethical Theories

...A Comparison of Ethical Theories A Comparison of Ethical Theories Every person, no matter how immoral or how moral, has a code of behavior to which they adhere. This code can come as a result of family life, learned from friends at a young age, influenced by coworkers and peers as an adult or could be a set of societal norms that a whole community conforms to. Philosophers have developed many theories regarding the reasoning behind the most common moralities, some as far back as Aristotle and others more recent, such as Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill. The three most common theories of morality are best exemplified by these three men; Aristotelian moral theory, Kantian ethics and Mill’s utilitarianism. While these theories hold much in common regarding how they see morality, they differ greatly in their reasoning for why they think that way. Aristotelian virtue ethics focus more on the person as a moral creature at heart and their desire for morality to be the driving force behind moral behavior. An excellent example of the difference in the three theories in this instance would be a situation involving lying. Dishonesty is considered morally wrong by most theories of ethics, but all of the moral theories approach it differently. Deontology, as espoused by Immanuel Kant, would argue against the morality of lying from a moral absolutism standpoint. Lying is wrong no matter what, and any good that comes from it is discounted by the evil of lying. Utilitarianism...

Race and Gender as Moderators

...21,5 RESEARCH NOTE Income, the love of money, pay comparison, and pay satisfaction 476 Received June 2005 Revised February 2006 Accepted February 2006 Race and gender as moderators Thomas Li-Ping Tang Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Theresa Li-Na Tang Affinion Group, Brentwood, Tennessee, USA, and Beeta Yazmeen Homaifar Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center, Denver, Colorado, USA Abstract Purpose – This study aims to test a model of pay satisfaction and argue that the income-pay satisfaction relationship depends on one’s love of money and how one compares. Design/methodology/approach – The paper investigates: a direct path (income ! total pay satisfaction); an indirect path (income ! the love of money ! pay equity comparison ! total pay satisfaction) using a structural equation model (SEM) based on 210 full-time employees; and the model across race and gender in multi-group analyses. Findings – The paper finds that for the whole sample, there was one significant path (pay equity comparison ! total pay satisfaction). Since African-Americans ($32,073.15) and women ($32,400.58) tended to have lower income than Caucasians ($37,180.73) and men ($38,287.97), respectively, income significantly increased the importance of the love of money for African-Americans and females, but not for Caucasians and males. The love of money to pay equity comparison path was not significant. Income was not related to pay...

Comparing Code of Ethics

...Codes of Ethics Comparing Codes of Ethics The similarities between the ACA and the AMHCA code of ethics, they both providing training, guidance, and direction in making ethic decisions for their members (ACA, 2005) (AMHCA, 2010). The ACA and AMHCA codes of ethics cover a wide range of ethical and professional situations common to the practicing professional. An example of not having the correct training in multicultural counseling is in the case study of “Allison: The Case of the Well-Meaning Feminist”. Allison, a 28 year old student was counseling Carmen, 19- years old Latina, did not understand the Latina cultural. If Allison would of have training on the Latina cultural, she would have understood the importance that Carmen’s father plays a significant role in the family (Herlihy & Corey, 2006). The other similarity is the commitment of students, employee, and supervisory relationships. The commitment of students, employee, and supervisory relationships are similar in both codes of ethics emphasizing that it is unethical to engage in any relationships (ACA, 2005) (AMHCA, 2010). I have seen this first hand, where I used to work they did not like management having any relationship with employees. It could have cause friction between employees and management. Differences in Codes of Ethic Although, there are similarities between the ACA and the AMHAC codes of ethics there are some distinct between the two. One of the most noticeable is the difference in how violations...
