The Easy Way Out

Set in Rome, before the founding of the Roman Republic, The Rape of Lucrece is Shakespeare’s narrative poem about the rape and resulting suicide of the title character. Dazzled by her beauty and virtue and his overwhelming desire to "own" her, Tarquin sneaks into Lucrece's bedroom and does the unthinkable. In an attempt to silence her after the act, he threatens not only to take her life her but claims that he will kill a slave and place him next to her thus proclaiming to the world that they were engaged in a sexual relationship and thereby destroying Lucrece's honor. Tarquin places Lucrece in, what seems to her, an impossible situation. Though Lucrece begs Tarquin to come to his senses and consider his own honor, he gags her with her nightgown and carries out the rape. Afterwards, Lucrece writes to her husband and father to come home quickly and when they do, recounts the atrocity and then stabs herself. Collatinus and Lucretius, then declare Lucrece’s tragedy to the people of Rome, which in turn leads to the downfall of the Tarquin regime and the rise of the Roman Republic. The true tragedy in the story of Lucrece is not the rape itself but the fact that Lucrece feels that suicide is the only option she has as a result. After raping Lucrece, Tarquin expresses a 'blame the victim' mentality. “Thus he replies: ‘The color in thy face, / That even for anger makes the lily pale, / And the red rose blush at her own disgrace, / Shall plead for me and tell my loving tale. / Under that color am I come to scale/ Thy never-conquered fort; the fault is thine, / For those eyes betray thee unto mine” (476-482). In other words, Tarquin blames Lucrece's beauty for the attack he has carried out and sees himself as a victim of Lucrece's sensuality. Lucrece as well, placed some of the blame on herself, reiterating Tarquin’s earlier claim that her “beauty has ensnared” her: “My bloody judge forbade my tongue to speak; / No rightful plea might plead for justice./ His scarlet lust came evidence to swear/ That my poor beauty had purloined his eyes;/ And when the judge is robbed the prisoner dies” (1648-1652). She also seems self-aware that her ignorance about the 'true nature' of men's sexual desires made her vulnerable to the attack and whereas it might be logical to blame her father and husband for keeping her in the dark on these matters, she does not. It is disturbing that Lucrece actually sees herself as contaminated by her rape. After Tarquin leaves, Lucrece constantly refers to her own “foul-defiled” (1080) or “stained blood" (1232), that somehow her own body shares in the sin that Tarquin has committed. Lucrece feels stained and although she did not intend or cause the act to happen, she feels guilty and responsible. When she finds herself victimized, the idea of pregnancy being a result suddenly comes to her mind and terrifies her. She comes to the conclusion that taking her life will somehow erase the sins she feels she is guilty of because she was incapable of preventing the attack. During the fourth century some believed that a women should commit suicide rather than summit to rape because her virtue was destroyed by the act. If she could not kill herself before the crime than she should kill herself afterwards rather than live as a dishonored woman. Lucrece’s motives for suicide are presented in the context of the Roman concept of honor and it is the fear of dishonor and shame that seems to motivate her to act as she did, "My honour I’ll bequeath unto the knife/ That wounds my body so dishonoured./ ’Tis honour to deprive dishonour’d life;/ The one will live, the other being dead. (1184-1187). It has been argued that if Lucrece was so chaste and pure, she should have either defended herself to the death or killed Tarquin, and that her suicide after the rape does not absolve her of any implied complicity. However, Shakespeare presents her as having had no other option but to surrender when Tarquin threatened that her attempts to resist would only lead to a further debasement of her image and her family's. Her exit from life, as in other Shakespearean works, has tragic dignity largely motivated by the Roman concern for honor called pietas which stressed the importance of maintaining honor and dignity for both the State and the family. The Elizabethans also cherished honor so it was a common theme in the works of Shakespeare. Not all scholars believe that Lucrece's suicide was inevitable due to the Roman concept of honor. Stilva for example argues that there is no evidence that Roman Pagans encouraged women to commit suicide circumstances such as this one and although suicide was accepted in Pagan philosophy in some situations, the prevention of rape was not one of them. As an innocent victim of rape, there was no need for Lucrece to commit suicide. The expectation of death before dishonor, or suicide after rape, as proof that a woman was virtuous was a Christian idea dating back to the martyrs and was not rejected by Christians until Saint Augustine developed the Christian view condemning suicide. There is a saying in Spanish "el hubiera no existe" that means; 'What if' doesn't exist. Although this is undoubtedly true, it is hard not to question what would have happened if Lucrece had been strong enough to stand up to her attacker and publicly accuse him instead of taking the 'easy way' out. Would she have gone down in history as a defender of her gender, one of the first women to publicly accuse a rapist and take a stand against women being 'owned' by men and only being as valuable as her 'virtue' was to them? Or would she be an obscure royal figure with a tarnished reputation, as she so obviously feared?

Overcoming Obstacles

...This quote expresses how if we are approached by an obstacle, no matter what, you should always do what is right and will benefit the community. Often times you have two options when escaping a difficult situation: the easy way, or the hard way. Most times we are tempted, and sometimes encouraged, to partake in the easy way out. The easy way makes us feel better, faster. However we rarely learn from our mistakes when we take the easy way out; instead, we continue to make mistakes that lead us into the same, harmful situation. When we choose to take the difficult route, or in this case the “harder right”, we not only learn from our mistakes but develop valuable skills necessary to prevent us from finding ourselves in that situation again. This...

A Worn Path

...acquire medicine for her sick grandson. On her way she encounters many obstacles such as the thorns in which her dress got caught in, barbed wire, a scarecrow, a large dog, a hunter and the lady, which ties her shoes. All of these obstacles among her dementia and hallucinations, which are implied throughout the story, delay her from reaching town. Throughout the story the reader can perceive that her grandson has already died, however due to her dementia she has trouble remembering. A Worn Path by Eudora Welty is a metaphor for people in this world that use the “worn path” instead of the easy one to reach their goals, just like Phoenix Jackson used her undying love and devotion for her grandson as a push towards town through the forest even though the journey is hard. Phoenix’s journey through to the woods to town is a long and tiredly one- her journey in many ways is just like many of ours. Practicing the Skills

...indicate which steps are sequential, and which can be done simultaneously with others. What do you think is the ideal team size for each activity you choose? A. Making an omelet When making an omelet there are steps that need to be taken to make sure that the omelet comes out the way that you want it to. Making an omelet is usually a one person activity, but some time you can make it with two people. If you follow these easy steps you can make sure that your omelet comes out the way you want it to taste. First you need to make sure that you have all of the ingredients. The main ingredient is eggs, and to make a good omelet you will need about four eggs that way there is enough to cover the other ingredients. The next ingredients that you will depends on what kind of an omelet you are wanting to make, so I will make a ham and cheese omelet. For a ham and cheese omelet you will need ham and cheese to add to your eggs. Along with the ingredients you need to make sure that you have a skillet and a spatula so that you can cook your omelet on. The second thing that you will need to do when making your omelet is to mix your eggs. Usually you can just out your eggs into a cup or bowl and mix them that way and then add them to you skillet once it is hot. The reason you have to make sure that you mix all of your eggs together is because you do not want to add your eggs to your skillet and then...

...1. Fresh and Easy is a discount store with high quality products and simple, self service stores. These stores are meant to fill in the gap between small convenience stores and larger supermarkets in the United States. Fresh and Easy consists of a 1.4 million square foot distribution center built in order to create an entirely new brand. This classification tells us that Fresh and Easy’s marketing efforts should emphasize aspects of convenience as well as affordability. They can do this by offering promotions as well as coupons often and in visible areas, like local newspapers or magazines. The target market for Fresh and Easy should be people on a budget but still with preferences and a desire for quality goods. It is important for Fresh and Easy to make customers aware of their new and more convenient option through advertising. Advertisements should be placed in areas that would reach the target market such as television commercials, newspapers, as well as other local stores. These advertisements should continue to enforce their message of fresh foods at low prices as well as support of local communities and environmental consciousness. For example, Fresh and Easy could donate portions of proceeds to organizations that go along with these goals within their local communities, as well as offer promotions for those customers who support these organizations too. 2. Day Trippin Song Writing

..."The Easy Way Out" by Emma Schwartz “Day Tripper,” was written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Lennon sings the lyrics exquisitely. The vocals was sung by Lennon and McCartney. However, Lennon had the original idea for the melody after using LSD for the first time and work together with McCartney to finish it. I, for the most part, like the jingle because I think it has a catchy tune and an upbeat melody. This song gives me a feeling of buoyancy, like a trip or floating. Acid was beginning to play an active role in their music and they began to sing about the experience. Day Tripper is a jargon term for somebody who failed to entirely embrace the hippy existence, for the Beatles they involved the life but kept it concealed and only showed the well turned-out image side of themselves. This part of the song reminds me of a life filled with stress and drama. Stresses of being isolated because of the Beatle-mania fever with fans. Problems that they needed an outlet for, but yet you know they are tripping on the drugs to escape their stressful mayhem in life, they are justifying their actions. Although they see themselves as round-the-clock trippers, “fully committed drivers, she was just a day tripper.” they was someone who was committed only in part to the idea, the drugs took them on the trip to release themselves. Everyone has their own concerns in life, they want to escape from the real world, so I believe individuals relate to these lyrics. “Got a good reason, for taking...
