It’s difficult to forget Boxing Day of 2004 when news broke that an immense tsunami had swamped south-east Asia, taking the lives of more than 250,000 people in its course. It was a natural disaster of incomparable power and unspeakable loss. The Impossible-a true story about one family’s survival- successfully portrays the many emotions and horrors brought from such tragedy and director Juan Antonio Bayona spins the focus in on a single family caught up in the disaster, personalising the horror and bringing it home in melodramatic fashion on its very own tidal wave of emotion.
Bayona and scriptwriter Sergio G Sanchez have explored the depths of parental fear before in ‘The Orphanage’ and here they use an onslaught of the natural rather than the supernatural to create a sense of pain and terror that is no less acute. As Henry (Ewan McGregor), Maria (Naomi Watts) and their three sons Lucas (Tom Holland), Thomas (Samuel Joslin) and Simon (Oaklee Pendergast) settle into the beachfront resort in Thailand on Christmas Eve, there are shots of calm cerulean waters, lush palm trees, exotic orchids and a refreshing swimming pool in which to relax. An ordinary day by the pool turns into an almost unimaginable nightmare as the wave hits. The family are tossed around like toys as the rush of water is like a freight train and the camera’s point of view initially focuses on Maria and her oldest son Lucas as they are both submerged into soundless, murky depths. We are taken with Maria as she is pulled along the violent flow, slashed, battered and absolutely crushed along the way by debris before surfacing to a maelstrom of heart wrenching screams and being left in a landscape transformed from holiday paradise to a place from hell. It is the sort of film making that leaves your jaw open in utter amazement wondering how the hell they did it. If Maria’s pain is physical, it is nothing compared to the fear she feels as she hunts for the rest of her family. Meanwhile Henry who has been washed up elsewhere also faces the terror of not knowing what has become of his brood. Although there are many powerful scenes in this true life story, it is a lump-in-throat moment when Henry breaks down on the phone to his father in law and we see the real, raw emotion and that last bit of hope slowly being let go of.
All of the actors featured in The Impossible are stupendous but we do have to keep in mind that the real life Maria Belon and her family have been transformed into blonde and beautiful Brits with upper-class accents and a bourgeois sense of entitlement (no doubt a decision made by box office). Standing out from the rest of the cast is Naomi Watts. She chanelled raw emotion and believably portrayed her character as a broken, wounded human being who was drained physically and mentally to the point of near death. Bayona also manages to explore the horror of the story from the children’s point of view - particularly eldest son Lucas who tries to ‘man’ up for his injured mum. However, all the children seem to rise to the occasion and leave a lasting impression.
With simplicity and sincerity, The Impossible manages to be something other than a predictable disaster movie. It can be a difficult movie to watch due to the range of emotions it stirs inside you but it’s a directorial masterpiece and I am certain you will be blindsided by its touching, emotional power - as I was. It sends across a very simple message that we all too often look straight past - that love is really all you need. As you leave and go back home, you will hug your family a little tighter and appreciate those moments with them more than you ever did before.

Business

...During the past few weeks, I have watched episodes and lessons of the shows; “Bar Rescue” and “Restaurant Impossible.” These shows air on Spike TV and also on Food Network. Throughout each program, the expert visits a failing business and tries within his power to turn the business around. In doing this, the expert has to reach through strides of work and stressful situations as do the owners of the business. Also in viewing the shows, I have noticed each owner being frustrated as their business is failing and frustrated that the expert knows how to fix and deal with the problems. They undergo many difficult tasks and changes. Both “Bar Rescue” and “Restaurant Impossible” are similar in certain ways. The basic premise of each show is to have the expert go into a failing business who is reaching bankruptcy and save the day. The expert and host of “Bar Rescue” is Jon Taffer. Jon Taffer is a professional bar consultant and a Nightclub Hall of Fame inductee. Overall, he knows the “in’s” and “out’s” of the Bar scene and how to manage his field of business. Being the expert that he is, Taffer is certainly qualified for hosting this show. The other show that is very similar to this one is “Restaurant Impossible.” It has the same basic premise and is designed to not only help bars, but to help struggling business get back on their feet. The host of Restaurant Impossible is Chef Robert Irvine. Robert Irvine is a British-American celebrity chef who has appeared on numerous...

Illusions in Relativy

...impressive optical illusions. Especially in “Impossible constructions” collection, he did excellent works in playing various visual tricks on those artworks that profoundly confuse the observers at the first sign. The piece of art “ Relativy” depicts an unrealistic interior space with the stairs that never go the same way, the floors, doors and balconies are put on every sides of the rooms in this view. There are also a number of people climbing up and down the stairs and assign “up” or “down” direction in a complicated and strange way, thus completely confuse our visual analysis. However, if the people in motion is supposed to be invisible in the picture, the structure, especially the stairs system seems to be visually possible and at least overall perspective cannot look occur, even though the positions of other furniture pieces may not make logical sense. Therefore, it is effortless for grouping structural elements which are of the same shade and well-connected and well-defined in mass and form. Otherwise, when the number of people moving is involved in the perspective, it can be seen that their shade visually matching with the construction as well as the visual tricks occur to make the picture look ambiguous itself. This is because that three out of four main stairs seem to allow people to climb on both top and bottom, reach and stand on every interior sides of the building, and most of their positions may also be impossible because they defy the force of gravity....

Hooked on Guns

...Impossible Motherhood: Testimony of an Abortion Addict, by Irene Vilar. This is a memoir in which Vilar discusses her past and how she was an “abortion addict”. When published, it was met with abundant criticism. She spoke about her numerous abortions 15 in total. Vilar, while a teenager in college, became trapped in an abusive relationship with a professor. This foul and dangerous relationship resulted in a loss of self-esteem and sacrifice which ultimately resulted in her suffering physical and emotional abuse. Irene Vilar, is a successful women; she is an editor, author, and literally agent in which she represents writers and their works. As previously mentioned, Vilar is successful but after reading her memoir, and seeing the oppression and suffering, you realize she is a victim. She underwent enormous turmoil and tough times. Her journey to success has not been easy. She has overcome many emotional obstacles to achieve greatness. Thus, this is a story of “hope”. It makes one’s own situation seem a lot more bearable and optimistic. Although there is ultimately hope, I believe this story is about the harm Vilar has experienced throughout her life. The harm she experiences is so abundant and persistent throughout her entire life. There is concentrated emphasis on these moments and events. I will discuss the harm the author went through by focusing on important events and situations that shaped the harm consistently endured by Vilar. I will begin by looking at her...

The Impossible Trinity

...INTERNATIONAL FINANCE “The impossible Trinity” Has the “Managed Float” approach worked for Trinidad and Tobago? The Impossible Trinity: Managed Float in Trinidad and Tobago International economics holds the hypothesis that it’s impossible for a country to simultaneously execute: 1. A fixed exchange rate 2. Free capital movement and, 3. An independent monetary policy This trilemma or “Impossible Trinity” as it is commonly referred to, is one of those aspects of the nature of things, like scarcity and asymmetric information that makes life difficult. Specifically, the trilemma means that a country can follow only two of the three aforementioned policies at once. To keep exchange rates fixed, the central bank must either restrict capital flows or give up its control over the domestic money supply, interest rates, and price level. This means that a country must make difficult decisions about which variables it wants to control and which it wants to give up to outside forces. The four major international monetary regimes; specie standards, managed fixed exchange rate, free float and managed float differ, so to speak, in their solution to the trilemma. This paper focuses however, on the managed float as it relate to the Trinidad and Tobago economy. The managed float exchange rate system A managed float exchange rate system is an international financial arrangement, whereby central banks intervene only periodically, not necessarily to support a country's...

Impossible Is Nothing

...IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING In the summer of 2004, in the occasion of Olympic Games in Athens, Adidas, world famous brand in the field of sport clothing has made one of the most inspiring campaigns I have ever seen. With claim “Impossible is nothing” they have placed focus on the values they wanted their products to transmit and represent. This international company adapted itself to a trend that, in an occasion such as Olympic Games are, inevitably, sees in competition not only the athletes but also the brand they wear; it is a battle led through campaigns in various mass media. Focus of my analysis is placed on three TV commercials, videos each of which lasts 30 seconds. I find it necessary to describe them before proceeding with my analysis in order to provide a better insight in the material I will discuss and to present the way I saw and understood this campaign. Each of the videos has famous athletes as its protagonists and they are all made in the way that with digital trickery present day athletes are matched with champions from the past. First of them is Olympic champion Haile Geberlassie. In the video we find this Ethiopian athlete preparing himself for a surreal, 10 000 meters long race. He is surrounded with his clones, all dressed slightly different but all in Adidas. In the background we hear his voice talking in first person saying that despite all medals won and the records broken it is necessary and possible to always improve yourself and beat yourself one more...

Perfection Is Impossible

...Marie Losloso 3/17/14 Eng 201 A Jon Drinnon Perfection is Impossible Who doesn't want to look perfect? A large number of women always have their own natural beauty, but there's always things you can buy that can help you stay in shape, look fabulous, gorgeous and to have the most beautiful hair and hottest clothes. In women's magazines I noticed multiple ad's trying to persuade the consumer into buying a product that they think will work. I did a small study on three women's magazines to see if these magazines are telling the truth about what products work. One magazine called, "Cosmopolitan", as we all know even if it's about the product working or not, most women don't realize what can harm themselves. From extreme energy weight loss pills that contain much caffeine and other harmful ingredients that can really harm you body, and face treatments that you can apply for minutes that can help you looking good, which you're not 100% sure that it may work, also another magazine by "Ladies Home Journal", had advertisements on a lot of diet treats, but it's not a diet treatments when it still contains a lot of sugar or a lot of caffeine! All these ad's have their own harmful ingredients. "Seventeen", another magazine where I seen most about what's more in style. In, "Help or hindrance? Women's magazines offer readers little but fear, failure" by Mary Kay Blakely, who has done a study on depression with women and women's magazines. However, the media contributes to eating...

Mission Impossible

...Erin Knight Melissa Norbeck English 101(20) September 16, 2013 Mission Impossible…Never It was a bitterly cold and snowy night when I received the devastating phone call from my mom. “What do you mean he looks sick and can’t walk?” I exclaimed while the tears began to well up and stream down my cheeks. My world was coming to an end while listening to my mom describe the horror that she found while feeding my horse. The last thing I remember hearing her tell the vet was, “do whatever it takes to save this horse.” New Bolton animal hospital was IBNs’ new home for the next 3 weeks; which mind you, was not a pretty bill. They tried to convince me that the best thing for him was to put him down. “What…are you crazy!” is the only thing I could think of every time they would tell this. He was by all means very sick and had lost all four of his hooves due to laminitis, an extremely high fever causing a horse to founder. Despite all the hope I had had, New Bolton informed me that IBN would never be able to be ridden again, let alone be sound. I didn’t care, he was my horse. The next year and a half was full of heartache, patience and finally excitement. I was for sure certain his riding and show jumping career was over. This was a lot for a 15 year old to handle. We had been at the top of our game the year before; and the following I had predicated us to be unbeatable. But instead he spent his days in a stall, belly deep in saw dust, unable to walk or lay down because...

Mission Impossible 4 - Review

...Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol Mission Impossible 4 is an american action thriller and as you can guess it is the forth film in the Mission Impossible series. Its star is Tom Cruise as an IMF-agent named Ethan Hunt. The film is set in many countries of the world for example Russia, Hungary and the United States of America. it takes place in the 21th Century. The terrorist nicknamed 'Cobalt' plans to start a nuclear war, because of that he signs a contract killer on to steal the Russian launch code in Budapest while he erases his records in the Kremlin. Ethan Hunt is assigned to retrieve Cobalt's identity in the Kremlin, but the terrorists arrive first and bomb it. The IMF is blamed for the bombing and the president of the USA shuts down the organization by invoking the so called 'Ghost Protocol'. Ethan Hunt and his team tries to clear the name of the IMF and attempt to avoid Cobalt from bombing the USA. In the end they are successful. The main character is Ethan Hunt and he is a really intelligent and relaxed middle-aged agent. The soundtrack is amazing and it fits perfectly to the plot, just as like the really great special effects. I really enjoyed the whole series of the M:I's but this part is my preferred one. My favourite scenes were the bombing of the Kremlin and the gunfights. I've watched the film together with my friends at home because of that I can really recommend to watch it with your friends. Engineering the Impossible: a Film Analysis

...Engineering the Impossible: A Film Analysis The documentary “Engineering the Impossible” features three ‘impossible’ superstructures that would define the world’s grandest architecture and engineering: Millennium Tower, Freedom Ship, and Gibraltar Bridge. David Nelson, one of the key designers, designed Millennium Tower to be a city within a city, hosting its own hospitals, schools and a range of entertainment and retail options large enough to attract and keep the traffic necessary for the financial success of such an endeavor. Its designers calculate that this structure would represent the best solution to the world’s population explosion. Freedom Ship, designed by Norman Nixon, would be the world’s first mobile community and would house more than 60,000 people whose dream is to travel the world without leaving the comforts of their home. Its passengers would circle the globe within two years with no need of a traveling backpack as the ship would contain all of the features that any modern city might have. Gibraltar Bridge, designed by T.Y. Lin, spanning 9 miles over the Straits of Gibraltar at the entryway to the Mediterranean, would serve as the first modern structure to bridge two continents together, starting from Morocco in Northern Africa to Spain in Southern Europe. According to its designers, the success of such an impressive design is expected to contribute to both of the continents’ tourism industry and economy. On the other hand, engineering the ‘impossible’ would have...
