...executive, commercial banks in China are under intensive public scrutiny for undertaking a just business. The masses want something/somebody to blame for the gloomy economy, and the press simply want blood. I have served in Shanghai Pudong Development Bank (SPDB) as a corporate banking specialist for 5 years, thus my genuine acknowledgement of some complaints voiced by the public. Still, however inadequate my knowledge on the banking matter is, I must point out the fact that commercial banks, especially public-listed ones, are mainly responsible to their shareholders and profit-maximization is their prime goal. Commercial banks are not charities, and companies should be rather proud when its profit is “embarrassingly high”. Nevertheless, modern society grants commercial banks and other corporations alike personae, banks are expected to behave with a conscience as well. Profiting does, rather than diminish welfare of others, promote collective well-being. In the following sections, I will further illustrate how SPDB, the company I serve in, profits economically through promoting the welfare of the society. All data cited can be found in disclosed materials on SPDB’s website. 2. Inclusive Finance The financial mechanism of our country has gone through dramatic changes and innovations to pay more attention and allocate more resources on the underdeveloped and the underprivileged. SPDB, as one of the major banks in China, introduces its inclusive finance policy in order to ensure...

...There are a number of ways in which economic policy could influence the success of the tourism industry. First, there are ways that economic policies a government takes can have a direct impact on tourism. This type of impact would occur when a government makes policies explicitly aimed at the tourism industry. For example, if a local government subsidises the building of a resort in a beach town, the tourist industry in that town will, presumably, benefit. Second, there are ways economic policy can indirectly affect tourism. For example, government monetary policies are most likely not aimed at tourism. However, if a government's monetary policies cause the exchange rate for its currency to fall, tourism will likely benefit. This is because the country's currency will become cheaper and vacations in that country will become less expensive for people in other countries. SELECTED PRESENTATIONS, SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS - SEMINAR ON TOURISM POLICY AND ECONOMIC GROWTH Introduction 1. This note presents the record of a seminar held on 6 and 7 March 2001 in Berlin, aimed at exploring the relationships between economic growth and tourism policy. ...SUMMARY Overall, the SME FDI is currently an extremely valuable initiative. Through appropriate and careful analysis of the data, public policy can be directed yet more efficiently to further improve competitive advantage of Canada's SMEs. In particular, the baseline survey associated with the SME FDI is an extraordinarily valuable research undertaking. It provides the potential to assess directly the extent to which financing gaps might occur in the capital markets on which SMEs rely. This is an important issue in practical terms, in terms of the role of public policy, and in terms of economic and finance theory. The SME FDI baseline survey data provides, for the first time internationally, a means of empirically testing Nobel prize-winning ideas related to information asymmetry and capital rationing. The data provides a means of providing yet better guidance for public policy with respect to addressing potential capital market imperfections that might constrain growth and economic development of SMEs. As designed, the research initiative can and will provide valuable information about these issues. In summary, the baseline survey undertaken as part of the SME FDI is a potentially invaluable resource with respect to the design, targeting, implementation, and follow-up assessment of public policy approaches to nurturing SME growth and viability. The outcomes of this research process could help Industry Canada and its partners to provide Canadian SMEs with substantial competitive...

...industries in form of customers. Attractiveness in Banking Investment Introduction The recent years have seen a rise in large and well-established banks in developed economies. This has raised concerns on the effects such banks will have on the countries’ economy. Many economists are of the view that large banks may have a negative impact on a country’s economy as well as the borrowers. As such, there have been debates on whether or not large banks should be broken up into small banks that have less market power. Scholars from Vietnam and China advocated for the need to break up banks in order to reduce taxpayers and depositors’ risk and enhancing the bank’s leverages level. There are various benefits relating to breaking up banks. As such, China and Vietnam might be right in listening to the claims that large banks should be broken up. This paper will examine this claim in detail by examining whether Vietnam and China banking sector are in trouble or not. This is a fact that...

Personality characteristics, behavior and motivation are also the major elements, which should be taken into consideration. There are many determinants of being or becoming self-employed which are dealt with in the literature, such as employment status, minority behavior, immigrant behavior, family firm effects and attitudinal effects (Freytak/Thurik 2006, 6). The assignment compares the level of entrepreneurial activity between the U.S. and China as these locations have contrasting...
