...to spend their lives. It is also during the youth a person can truly be free to do, feel and think about whatever they wish, without having to deal with the obligations and responsibilities that follows being an adult just yet. The short story was written with a third person narrator, but the reader follows Ellie throughout the story, and we hear about her thoughts and actions. Being able to know how she thinks, gives the reader an insight in how she sees and experiences the world that surrounds her. Also the story is given an extra edge because the tone of the short story is influenced by Ellie’s vocabulary, which isn’t exactly a nice one: “Fuuuuuuck (…) Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit” (l. 12-13). This also gives a presentation of who Ellie is as a person, and what the area, she lives in, is like. The main character in the short story is Ellie. She is nineteen years old, and lives in something like a student hall in London. She is studying, but not because she really wants to. She stays up late to party and skips school in the mornings. Her last change for staying on the “bloody course” (l. 66), as she calls it, is to turn in the essay due to the following morning. At first she seems determined to turn in this essay, but later on she really couldn’t care less, but in the end it has finally come clear to her that turning in the essay would be the right thing to do. Ellie takes drugs to escape the world where she will soon have to take responsibility of her actions...

...decisions, and feel pressured. Therefor they want to escape from reality by ingesting drugs or drinking alcohol which could be their way of protesting against responsibilities and a search for freedom, or maybe it is just because they are in that age where they are open to all kinds of experimentations. This is what the main character Ellie is facing, in the short story “A Gap of Sky” written by Anna Hope in 2008; Ellie is wandering around in the streets of London and in her own mind as well. Her walk around London’s streets becomes a walk through her own mind. Crisis, confusion, changes, responsibilities and fear, are the main components of a short story by Anna Hope. A story which is intriguing, and will take you one step closer, to understand what a ‘typical’ teenager can go through. In this essay I will analyze and interpret Anna Hope’s short story A Gap of Sky. I will characterize the main character Ellie, and analyze her behavior as a teenager. I will also focus on the narrative technique in the short story and the importance of the city sitting. Though an analysis I will conclude upon my discoveries and determine the theme of the story. The main character of the short story, nineteen year old Ellie, is a university student and lives in London. She has...

...personality and that's why the youth is such a vital part of life. But being young is not always as easy as it sounds. Even though freedom is within reach, responsibility and expectations are breathing young people in the neck reminding you of the pressure that comes with it. Instead of choosing the right path that brings them the best, more and more young people feel a massive pressure when undergoing the transition from child to adult. This pressure often result in frequent use of drugs and alcohol to escape from the harsh reality. This is the case in the short story “A Gap of Sky” by Anna Hope from 2008 that deals with the issues of drugs, freedom and pressure. The story is set in todays London and starts in medias res when the story's main character, Ellie, wakes up. Ellie seems tired, worn out from last night and you understand that she has a hard time getting out of bed. The first sentence describe the darkness around her: “It is dark, but the wrong dark. Something is wrong with the dark” (p. 1, l. 1) Her room is probably dark because the curtains block the sunlight. The wrong dark may symbolize Ellie's state of mind. Her unconsciousness tells her that something is wrong in her life, but she has yet to discover what it is. Ellie is a 19-year old girl who attends University College London (UCL). We quickly get the impression that Ellie is a rather obscene girl because she wakes up a monday morning after a party sunday night. She barely remembers anything that had happened...

Hip Hop: Song Analysis

... especially the black youth, was able to thrive due to its uncanny ability to adapt and respond to the problems that that era presents. From the socially and politically conscious hip hop (SPC hip hop) during the civil rights movements to the mainstream music we hear on the radio today, the difference in message projected by today’s modern, hyper-masculine hip hop onto society compared with that of SPC hip hop has become a controversial subject criticized by American media such as Byron Hurt’s movie “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” and Tricia Rose’s article “There Are Bitches and Hoes.” With regards to the negatives that hip-hop music could have on society, the songs “Let Nas Down” by J. Cole, “Come Get Me” by Jay-Z and “Bitches Ain’t Shit” by YG each respectively complicate, exemplify and extend Hurt’s claims that hip hop artists solely produce generic, hyper masculine mainstream music for the production of records; glorify violence and negatively portray women as sexual objects in order to prove their man hood. When the song “Let Nas Down” by J. Cole is analyzed through a historical context and compared to Hurt’s claim that hip hop artists solely produce mainstream music for their own benefit to the claim that is projected in the J. Cole’s lyrics, a complication between the two claims is illuminated. In the song “Let Nas Down”, Cole—who is a lesser known but reputable rap artist trying to produce SPC hip hop , expresses his shame on the negative response of his idol, Nas— ...

FIgure1 Expanding economies and international trade are driving our transportation energy demand, with transportation energies set to increase by more than 40% from 2010 to 2040. Of these, diesel comprises 70% of that growth (figure 1). This shift away from gasoline to diesel is driven by better light vehicle fuel economy and the growth in commercial transportation that comes from developing nations (Exxonmobil 2013). Although diesel is becoming the more prominent transportation energy, it is by far the cleanest. The Corner Shootings

...Throughout the piece, Simon and Burns both reveal snippets of the main tension in the text through instances of symbolism, meant to evoke the theme of the work, thoughtful imagery that plays with the expectations of the reader, and contradictions that highlight the central contention in The Corner, which is the purgatory of the titular corner and the tacit agreement between the locals and the officers who police them. There are many occasions where the authors use imagery to evoke a more surreal outlook of the corner. The shootings are described in a very passionate way, “distinct reports of individual shots now blend into cacophony… they look like fireflies amid the crescendo.” (Simon, Burns, 187). Other expressive words used in the description...

Amazon says their EC2 has 99.95% availability for each Amazon EC2 Region. The main upsides that catch my interest are price, security, and reliability, I believe this will be the main hook to catch customers interest when it comes to Amazons EC2 September 13, 2013 Amazons EC2 had a network issues that cause amazon to have a cloud outage and “The company also experienced increased error rates and latencies for the APIs for Elastic Block Storage and increased error rates for EBS-backed instance launches. Caroll's Oh, What We Left Behind

...This book will contain spoilers, and quotes from the book. When a book opened up with a relatable litany such as these: You’re bound to think, “Oh, hell yes. This shit might be good.” It better be good. However, What We Left Behind drastically failed in every standard that I was highly holding itself into. There are a lot of offensive and alarming situations that make my skin crawl. There is a prominent character in the story, named Caroll. He is gay, and he keeps using transphobic and lespobic slurs. He never got called out for that. Being part of the LGBTQ+ community doesn’t give you the right to undermine your peers, especially since you have an inkling about each other’s struggles. He could also be seen handful of times saying really awful...

Spirituality

...Spirituality for the Skeptic, the main idea and purpose of the text is: “the elucidation of a “naturalized” spirituality as distinct from normative understandings of “religion,” reconciled with the rationality driving various philosophical schools.” The chapter I chose to reflect upon and it’s relation to the main idea of the book is the chapter “Facing Up to Tragedy.” I chose this chapter because Solomon really shows how people deal with tragedy in a more spiritual individual level rather than the traditional religious level which ties into his overall theme of the book. Solomon describes tragedy as being meaningful because we as humans know that life is not fair and we accept and “adopt the tragic sense of life is nothing less than accepting reality.” (page 5 of 16 in the Chapter. I’m using a PDF ebook) I feel as though it is meaningful because it actually shapes our outlooks on life. A person that experiences more tragedy in their lifetime than someone who has not probably has a more realistic perspective on life and arguably a more pessimistic outlook in some cases. Solomon’s idea that we adopt the tragic sense of life and accepting it as a reality really relates to his overall theme of the book because in the process of life it seems to be a natural spiritual step that most people seem to reach at some point in our lives especially after witnesses multiple tragedies first hand. Solomon references how people deal with tragedy by saying “shit happens.” (Solomon, page 16...

I Adore Life

...The leaves are turning brown again. Cool and brisk, the wind blows up the torn sweater the old man wears. Visibly shaking and uncertain of his surroundings, he’s a husk of his former self. His eyes dilate, his face is melting. Literally melting. He collapses into a small dirty heap, his eyes shut and a final breath escapes his lips. A young boy walks by and asks for money, he too broke and dirty. Another shows up and prods his silent corpse. This is where our story begins. Set in Detroit, MI during the great recession, it’s a story based on the collapse of the withering economic catastrophe known as the Automotive Industry. I would like to ask for a possibility to build a film around the concept of the desolation felt in that town and of this place. But with only $500 in hand and an old VHS video recorder, there’s only so much I can create with these limited resources. It’ll be set in front of a Party Plus Market Off of Wyoming St, an area of town notorious for its high and violent crime rate. Its daring for sure, but I wish to capture the true feeling of a desperate environment in one of the most violent and crime riddled cities in America. If there’s a chance to negotiate an advance of at least $1000 to put towards filming expenses, it’d be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. EXT. LIQUOR STORE: It’s dark outside.
