The Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE) consists of asking the senior questions to test their cognitive function and is used as an indicator of dementia. This test involves mathematical skills, reading and writing ability, following instructions, and memory recall (Tabloski, 2014). However, we must take into consideration the education level of the senior, as well as their ethnic background. A study provided results that showed a significant discrepancy dependent upon education level as well as ethnicity and language barriers (Pedraza et al., 2012). According to Tabloski (2014), some people may be reluctant to tell a healthcare worker that they are unable to read and write, which can result in low scores instead of an actual cognitive function issue. …show more content…
is a white female with an education level of two years of college completed. Her family reported that she was able to read and write as well as solve mathematical equations with little difficulty prior to becoming a senior. She was tested using the Mini-Mental State Examination (Folstein, M., Folstein, S., & McHugh, 1975) and was able to complete all areas on the first try, with no hesitation, with the exception of the last two questions. These questions consisted of asking her to draw a figure of two shapes and also to write a sentence. She refused to do either exercise due to hand contractures, which make it very difficult to write. However, she does like to do crossword and seek and find puzzles, but states she can only do them on her good days, when she doesn’t have as much pain. She believes that by doing these puzzles, it will keep her mind active and alert. She did tell me that she would say a sentence out loud for me and it contained both a noun and a verb and made sense (J.B., personal communication, January 25,

Dementia

...Dementia Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning. This includes thinking, remembering and reasoning. Memory loss is usually accompanied by at least one of the following symptoms: impaired movement, difficulty with language and the inability to plan and initiate appropriate social behavior. Dementia ranges in severity from mild problems in functioning to the most severe stage of complete dependence. There are several types of dementia. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and irreversible brain disease. It slows and destroys memory and thinking functions as well as the ability to complete even the simplest everyday tasks. Age related Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia in people over 60. The World Health Organization (2001) estimates that 5 percent of men and 6 percent of women suffer from Alzheimer’s disease worldwide (Whitbourne & Halgin, 2012). Throughout the coming decades the baby boom generation is expected to add 10 million Alzheimer’s cases to the U.S. population alone (Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, 2013). Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, which causes issues with the thinking process, memory, and behavior. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s develop slowly and gets worse as time goes on. In the early stages of Alzheimer’s memory loss is very mild but as it progresses it starts disrupting their daily lives. Some of...

Exceptional Longevity

...breakthrough study, known as the “Georgia Centenarian Study” by Poon and colleagues conducted in 1992, has been exceptional in sparking subsequent research in the field of gerontology. This study consisted of recruiting 285 centenarians and individuals nearing 100 years of age (i.e. 98 years and older) from a 44-county area of northern Georgia (Davey et al., 2010). Participants were recruited from skilled nursing facilities, personal care homes as well as located through voter registry. Numerous subsequent studies have used the population-based data obtained from this study for further analysis of factors contributing to increased longevity. One such study by Martin et al. (2009), entitled “Engaged Lifestyle, Personality and Mental Status among Centenarians” aimed to provide...

Team Based Approach to Medical Care

...Alzheimer’s: A Team-Based Approach to Health Care Susan Medhurst Grand Canyon University: HCA 515 10/5/2013 Unfortunately, there is no single form of identifying test that can tell you if you have Alzheimer’s or if you are just forgetful. For those patients dealing with other illnesses like thyroid problems, depression and other health problems, memory loss is a very common side effect to their illness, which makes identifying Alzheimer’s even more difficult (Alzheimer’s association, 2013). This disease often goes unnoticed until the patient has reached a moderate to advanced stage because of the commonality of the indicators in early stages such as forgetfulness of where you put your car keys (Alzheimer’s association, 2013). Currently over five-million American’s have Alzheimer’s. This number will begin to increase as the baby boomers age and life expectancy is extended. The risk of getting Alzheimer’s only increases as we age with number of people doubling every 5-year interval beyond the age of 65 (Alzheimer’s association, 2013). Case Study Eaton, a 72 year old male patient, was found roaming downtown Denver with no recollection of how he got there. Paramedics brought him to the hospital for evaluation. The patient presents with progressive memory loss, confusion, agitation, and doesn’t know his last name. Identification in his wallet helped the hospital staff contact his wife. Upon the wife’s arrival, the patient seemed distant and unable to identify his wife Ethel...

In addition, it is normal for hair to gradually thin on the scalp, pubic area, and armpits. As hair pigment cells decline in number, gray hair growth increases. ...p. 210-211 Types of Data --There are two primary sources of data: subjective and objective. Subjective data are your patients’ verbal descriptions of their health problems. Only patients provide subjective data. For example, Mr. Jacobs's report of incision pain and his expression of concern about whether the pain means that he will not be able to go home as soon as he hoped are subjective findings. Subjective data usually include feelings, perceptions, and self-report of symptoms. Only patients provide subjective data relevant to their health condition. The data sometimes reflect physiological changes, which you further explore through objective data collection. --Objective data are observations or measurements of a patient's health status. Inspecting the condition of a surgical incision or wound, describing an observed behavior, and measuring blood pressure are examples of objective data. The measurement of objective data is based on an accepted standard such as the Fahrenheit or Celsius measure on a thermometer, inches or centimeters on a measuring tape, or known characteristics of behaviors...
