“It was certainly sui generis—it was the first thing of just that kind.” J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the scientists of the Manhattan Project, described the scientific importance of the discovery of the atomic bomb. Immediately after the droppings of the atomic bombs on Japan until the present day, there were many debates on whether the Manhattan Project was justified or if nuclear weapons are even ethical. Seeing the destruction of the “Little Man” and “Fat Boy” bombs in the moment arose great fear and discontent. However, looking at the Manhattan Project in retrospect shows that the advantages gained through the years greatly outweigh the consequences of the nuclear weapons. Power is projection is the mentality on displaying dominance as a world power and maintain stability in all facets. For America, this idea is more than just a military strategy, it is a culture. Ian Ralston, a professor at Liverpool John More University said, “The U.S. has become the most powerful, significant world force in terms of cultural imperialism and expansion.” The American ideals of democracy and freedom are radically different from other countries’ values. The atomic bombings in World War II helped establish America’s dominance and foster American exceptionalism. 60% of Americans believe that being America means being free. Combining United States dominance in the world and the inherent American values allows America to bring rights and privileges to United States citizens and people all around the world. Currently 14% of the world’s power is generated from nuclear energy. 9 countries’ militaries have nuclear weapon capabilities. The Manhattan Project not only gave the world the technology to defend themselves and power the nation, but also the hope for what could come in the future. A Canadian newspaper article from 1945 saw the atomic bombs as a starting platform for many great inventions to come. It mentioned the possibility of “telephone booth-size power plants” and “1000 hour auto trips on 1 gram of fuel.” Nuclear powered cars and houses are in the realm of possibility as the world continues to develop nuclear technology. The power of the atomic bombs shocked people all over the world and proved that the “possibilities are limitless” when it comes to scientific

The Pros And Cons Of The Manhattan Project

...The Manhattan Project was a top secret project during World War II conducted by the United States, Great Britain, and Canada to develop the first nuclear weapon (the atomic bomb). Once President Truman was informed of the Manhattan Project, he formed a committee to research and discuss the most effective way to use the bomb to shock Japan into surrendering. Based upon the massive loss of lives suffered by both the United States and Japan on Iwo Jima and Okinawa, President Truman knew that it was unlikely that Japan would surrender unconditionally as demanded by the Potsdam Declaration without an invasion of Japan itself. After conferring with advisers, President Truman considered, but ultimately rejected several alternatives to using the bomb....

...reaction in a large mass of uranium, by which large amounts of power and new radium like elements would be generated.” He continued,” This new development could lead to the creation of bombs, and as it seems, but less likely, the construction of an even bigger, new type of bomb.” President Roosevelt, although skeptical at first, decided to go through with the research and in 1941 the Manhattan Project was born. Four years later on August 6, the United States Dropped the first nuclear atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima wiping out 90 percent of the city, killing more than 80,000 people, and later tens of thousands more. Then again on August 9, another bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki and killing more than 40,000. 6 days later, the Emperor of Japan announced Japan’s official surrender to the United States in World War II. The effects and after effects of the the two bombs dropped shocked the entire world, even those a part of the Manhattan Project. The Japanese Emperor Hirohito described the bombs as the ”new and most cruel bomb.” This research paper will discuss the pros and cons of the use of nuclear weapons among different countries and how they affects the lives of those living within them. Nuclear weapons are crucial to the defense of a nation at war. When the United States used the 2 atomic bombs, nicknamed “little boy” and “fat man,” they did so in a way of ending the war quickly. A direct attack on Japanese shores could have resulted in the deaths...

Nuke Enrgy

...Introduction 1. [pp: 2Albert]Albert Einstein once said: “The release of atomic energy has not created a new problem. It has merely made more urgent the necessity of solving an existing one.” 2. Nuclear power is a source of energy that occurs when a neutron is launched at an unstable atom like uranium or plutonium. A cool fact about nuclear power is that it is a scientific discovery that was funded by the military. The US called it the Manhattan project. The project existed during WWII to create a bomb that would scare the world into peace Nuclear power is used in many ways to create power and to this there are many advantages and disadvantages, there are even some accidents but in the end there are more pros than there are cons. We talk about clean energy and most of you think of water or wind power, but there are some big drawbacks to these that nobody seems to ever discuss. Body I. What it’s used for [pp: 2Einstein]Nuclear energy is used to make power for many things. Many countries such as France and Japan have already changed most of their power to nuclear power and minimized the amount of fossil fuel used to create power. Many of the major navies in the world use this as a way to dominate the seas. The main reason that we don’t want to use fossil fuel is that it creates green house gases that may or may not be causing global warming but they do cause pollution in their immediate area with sulfur and other toxic chemicals...

President Truman's Moral Controversy

...the very first country to develop an atomic bomb, and their focus was to use it and show the world they had it. This action saved and took many lives around the entire world. The question on whether such a powerful attack was necessary to end the war has often been asked. Harry S. Truman became president after Theodore Roosevelt had died of a brain hemorrhage in April 1945. Roosevelt sadly passed away while World War II was still going on. The death of Roosevelt had a tremendous impact on Truman because he was left in a situation where he could not make a mistake or it would have been an absolute tragedy for the United States. While President Truman was patiently thinking on what his next move would be, the secret 3-year work of the “Manhattan Project” was about to be demonstrated to him. On July 16, 1946, American Scientists successfully detonated an atomic bomb in the desert of New Mexico. The decision of using the bomb on Japan was now on the hands of President Truman. After a long period of brutal fighting in the pacific, President Harry S. Truman Finally decided to drop the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. A few days Later, the United States dropped a second bomb over the city of Nagasaki. The first bomb killed over 70,000 civilians, and similar casualties are said to have happened with the second bomb (www.History.com). The use of the Atomic bombs triggered Japan to surrender and ended the war much quicker. It can be argued whether Truman’s decision was good...

Case Analysis: Coca-Cola Co

...1. Situation Analysis Case Background Created in 1886 by Dr. John Pemberton, Coca-Cola has gone through many changes, some good and some bad, but in the end has become the worldwide leader in its industry (Graham, 2011). The company boasts a lineup of approximately 500 different drinks, including soft drinks, teas, coffees, juices, and waters. Soft drinks are their “cash cow” with around two billion cans and bottles sold each day (Graham, 2011). The syrup originally was designed as a "cure-all tonic" and contained coca leaves (Davis, 2004). Two years after creating the mixture, and just before he died, Dr. Pemberton sold the rights to the beverage to Asa Candler. Due to increasing demand Joseph Biedenharn started bottling Coca-Cola and bottled distribution of the soda began; within five years large scale bottling operations became available. Throughout the company's history, and even today, it has faced and overcame many challenges. Coca-Cola was, until recently, the world’s most valuable brand (Elliott, 2013), but is still the worldwide leader in the beverage industry. Through all the successes, Coca-Cola has encountered some challenges along the way. Coca-Cola has been criticized for discrimination against minority employees, poor working conditions of migrant workers, and even assassinations of trade union leaders and union-affiliated workers that provoked protests (Raman, 2007). Another emerging issue the company is facing is criticism that their products are contributing...
