...The Life of Menkaure Humanities 111 June 2, 2013 John, I’ve written you a letter about a great soldier. His name is Menkaure and he followed his father on the throne. Several of his brothers served at as court Vizier. Not much is known from the time of menkaure. The date he was born is in question or unknown. Menkaure was an ancient Egyptian King of the 4 dynasties during the old Kingdom. Menkaure is known under his Hellenized names Mykerinos and Menkheres, According to manetho, he was the throne successor of king Bikheris, but according to archaeological evidence he was the successor of king Khafre. And Queen khamerernebti and the grandson of khufa; Menkaure is portrayed in the familiar Egyptian pose standing at attention with his left leg extended forward his are held stiff at his sides, and his fists clenched holding some unidentified cylindrical objects. His stance appears assertive, indicative of his power. He is represented as a mature yet vigorous man, perhaps in his thirties, with slender hips, broad shoulders, and well-developed arms. His body has been made to appear life like, which is common to all Egyptian statues in such areas as the knee, which are over-emphasized and the edge of the shin-bone which is too sharp, is anatomically correct. Overall, he appears to represent the ideal of manly beauty in old kingdom Egypt (witcombe, 1995) Menkaura, was the last king to build a pyramid in time line at Giza, and it was on a much reduced...

...The Pyramid Temple of Khafre Not all is clear when diving almost 5000 years into the past. A good deal is known about Khafre but where his reign lies is a little unclear. Khafre was the son of King Khufu and his queen Henutsen. Some experts say Khafre was the immediate successor of Khufu and some say Djedefre, also Khufu’s son was the immediate successor and Khafre followed his rule. Either way Khafre is known to have ruled during the 4th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. During his rule he was married to two queens, Khamerenebty I and Meresankh. He had a son with Khamerenebty who was named Menkaure and became king after Khafre’s death. When Khafre became king seems to be lost in history. Sources I have come across believe his rule to roughly be between 2558 BC and 2532 BC. Our book however, (Art History Vol. 1) states his rule to be from 2520-2494 BCE. What I get from this is that little evidence is available for a reliable time of rule. Khafre’s pyramid which will be the main focus of my paper is one of the Ancient Egyptian Pyramids of Giza located in the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. Khafre’s pyramid lays roughly a few hundred meters to the southwest of his father Khufu and Menkaure’s pyramid lays a few hundred meters further southwest of his father. (Pyramids by Joyce Filer) It only seems natural to first discuss the creation of the pyramid temple of Khafre. To build such a monumental structure thousands of workers would be needed including stone cutters, surveyors...

...Egyptians developed a wide variety of buildings and structures such as the pyramids, temples, palaces and monuments Spread along the River Nile (Blakemore, 100). Egypt being a country on a vast Sahara desert, timber was so scarce hence the two most prominent building materials were stones and sunbaked mud bricks. The stones include limestones, granite, coral and sandstone. Since the establishment of the Old Kingdom, big stones and boulders were a preserve of temples and tombs leaving bricks for other uses such as temple precinct walls, town buildings, fortress, palace, temple complexes and annexes (Reich and Cunningham, 35). For the pyramids, mudbricks, gravel, quarry stones and sand were used to build its core. The ancient Egyptian architecture was main massive structures with thick sloping walls based on religious monuments. The walls were sloping with wide base for stability of the mud structures (Dieter, et al., 46). Use of arches in buildings was introduced in the fourth dynasty to replace the post and lintel building structures with flat roofs and massive supporting walls or closed placed pillars (Gates, 102). Commonly on the walls both internal and external and on the columns were hieroglyphic, carvings and pictorial frescoes in visually fascinating colors. Some of the famous buildings and structures of the ancient Egyptian architecture include; The Giza pyramid complex The complex of Egyptian pyramids was built in the fourth Dynasty to act both as tombs and make the name...

Imhotep was a recognized architect and Founding Father of the great Third Dynasty pharaoh Zoser as a patron of writing between c. 2613-2686 B.C. (Boorstin, 1992). Two thousand years and centuries after his death as a mythical founder of Egyptian medicine and recognition of a divine status his proverbs are echoed (Boorstin, 1992). After his death devotees prayed for revelations of cures in dreams by honoring Imhotep by building a temple in Memphis on the island of Philae in the Nile.
