The six Principles of Special Education
Zero reject- states that all children age 3-21 have the right to schooling
Free and appropriate Public Education – The IDEA guarantees that each child with a disability is provided with FAPE. Education is directed by the IEP. It is designed that students progress in the general education classroom.
Appropriate Evaluation All students must be evaluated prior to receiving special education services. An evaluation must be given within a 60 day period of receiving the parents consent. Parents have the right to seek an independent evaluation at their own Expense at any time they feel the need for a second option.
LRE (Least Restrictive Environment) IDEA requires that Placement in a general education class must be the first placement option. All special education students must have a meaning access to same age peers without disabilities. Students with disability must also be considered for involvement in extra-curricular actives.
Procedural Safeguards- These safeguards also make certain that information that is shared is used to resolve all disagreements between the school district and the families. It also Ensure that the right of children with disabilities and their parents are protected.
Parental Participation -Idea Requires that parents and students participates in the special education process. All parents have write to receive a written notice and are entitles to participate in all meetings.
