The Sound of Emo There are many stereotypes in society for every culture or group of people. These stereotypes are often based on musical influences, personalities, activities, and fashion. I am going to focus this essay on the group of people who are known as Emo. Both positive and negative attributes come from stereotyping an Emo follower, but most of society focuses on the negative. This essay will focus on all aspects in hopes of turning some of these negative stereotypes into more positive ones. The word Emo is often used to describe anyone who is perceived as being too emotional, often too sad or too dark. The term Emo is short for “Emotional Hardcore” which describes the genre of music an Emo follower would listen to. According to author Brian Bailey (2005), “[Emo music] is characterized by feelings of vulnerability, and...confessions about adolescence. Emo music draws from various genres of music including rock, punk, indie, pop, and heavy metal...The behaviors, attitudes, and values expressed through Emo music involve...despair, nostalgia, heartbreak, hope, and self-loathing.” These emotional characteristics and topics described in this genre's music often associate with the life experiences and characteristics of its listeners. Emo music is characterized by heavy, distorted, or acoustic guitar with male vocals ranging from soft whispering to screaming. Lyrics are expressive and melancholy. Mainstream Emo bands include Dashboard Confessional, My Chemical Romance, Black Veil Brides, Taking back Sunday, and Jimmy Eat World. Emo music has 2 specific subgenres: Screamo and Emo-Pop. The characteristics of Screamo are more aggressive and focus on shifting between soft singing and screaming vocals. According to Johnathan Dee of The New York times, “the music [of Screamo] is most often characterized by dual guitars...by frequent shifts in tempo...[and] as aggressive [but] lyrics are contemplative.” Lyrics are more political and focus not only on emotional pain, but human rights and religion. Poison the Well and Senses Fail are two popular Screamo bands. The characteristics of Emo-Pop are more pop-oriented and encompass high pitched melodies and singing rather than screaming. Lyrics are often about heartbreak and love. Fall Out Boy, Saves the Day, and The Get Up Kids are a few popular Emo-Pop bands. The Emo music genre became popular in the early 2000's, and came from an earlier genre of hardcore punk rock of the 1980's. Punk rock is often associated with rage, aggression and destructive behavior, often against government establishments. Several mainstream hardcore punk bands of that time were Rites of Spring, Black Flag, The Sex Pistols, and Rancid. The Rites of Spring have been speculated to be the founder of the Emo genre, but its official originator is still unknown (Greenwald, 2003). Emo was born when punk rock kids began to turn their anger in towards themselves instead of aiming it outwards toward society, and became more emotional and involved with self expression. When speculating the beginning of the Emo genre I look to Andy Greenwald, author of the book Nothing Feels Good: Punk Rock, Teenagers, and Emo (2003). Greenwald says, "it is believed that this [Emo] was caused by the nation's grief after 9/11...the nation was deep in an introverted healing process, and the way it was healing was by wearing thick black glasses and vintage striped shirts. Emo, we were told, would heal us all through fashion" (p.93). I believe it is this fashion aspect of the Emo culture that make it an iconic genre of its time. The average Emo follower is between ages 14 and 25 and each individual embraces clothes, hairstyles, and music that portray their personality and emotions. Followers share fashion trends that focus on individuality and uniqueness. Thick, black rimmed glasses, tight band t-shirts, skinny jeans, studded belts, and Converse are what best describe the Emo style. The Emo fashion is most recognized for its hairstyles. Popular looks include long, jet black hair with side-swept bangs, covering one or both eyes (Greenwald, 2003, p.125). The Emo boy is typically more self image conscience and often referred to as metro-sexual and feminine because they often wear dark eye makeup, black nail polish and have piercings. Emo followers can usually be found at mainstream coffee shops, thrift stores, shopping mall arcades, and music concerts. The Emo culture is different from the goth culture. Some people think that they're the same and sometimes use "Goth" as another term for "Emo". In fashion, the one color that they have in common is black but the similarities stop there. Both Emo and Goth are forms of hardcore punk and experimental underground music. Their musical influences are similar with punk as the root, but Goth has veered off towards electronica and industrial rock, and as for their personalities, Goths and Emos are similar, often associating with depression and the dark aspects of life (Mabelle, 2011). However, you cannot identify one particular type of personality as being exclusively Goth or Emo. Typical personality stereotypes for the Emo culture are someone depressed, unhappy, and lonely with attitudes toward anti-society, pro-self harm, and pro-emotional suffering. These stereotypes have created the Emo scene to be linked with issues of cutting, self harm, and suicide by the media. In Suicide & Life Threatening Behavior, Stach, Gundlach, and Reeves (1994) refer to Emo music as inspiring “self-induced violent tendencies and suicide”, and that young people are “drawn to certain styles of music because the music reflects their attitudes and moods”. Some Emo music has been linked to promote cutting and self-mutilation. For example, Taking Back Sunday portrays cutting on one of their album covers and have produced a song titled “Cute without the E”, and Dashboard Confessional also make references to cutting in their song “If You Can't Leave It Be, Might As Well Make It Bleed” (Stach, Gundlach, and Reeves, 1994, p. 15-23). Contradictory to the studies by Stach, Gundlach, and Reeves (1994), Hilt, Cha, and Nolen-Hoeksema (2008) reported there are no cultural or medical links that connect self-harm to any one specific music genre or social group. Cutting and suicide are usually linked to psychological issues and serious mental illnesses, and claiming that the Emo music genre is responsible for self-harming is misleading because it is impossible to suggest that it affects any one specific group of people (Hilt, Cha, and Nolen-Hoeksema, 2008). Motivation for self-harming comes from mental and emotional problems and not simply because one listens to one particular musical style. Many people in the Emo scene are aware that it attracts vulnerable people; therefore help is provided in many ways for those involved in self-harming. Music concerts such as Warped Tour and Take Action Tour have combined Emo bands and the organization known as To Write Love on Her Arms, and they are dedicated to present help to people struggling with depression, self-injury, and suicide (www.TWLOHA.com, 2006). Although little research has been done on the negative effects of Emo music and its followers, the Emo scene is aware and providing help to spread suicide prevention awareness. There have been instances of violence against the Emo scene. Daniel Kreps (2008) reported on the first incident that occurred in 2008 in Mexico, when 800 young people came to the city of Queretaro with one purpose of finding Emo kids to beat up. People who disliked "the Emo look and attitude" started an anti-Emo movement using social networks. In response to the attacks, the Emo population began asking for peace and tolerance and organized a march with a Mexico City gay-rights organization because they felt the anti-Emo attacks were fueled by homophobia (Kreps, 2008). Some people believe that Emo is a popular trend coming to an end, and according to Andy Greenwald (2003) will eventually be replaced by Scene, which is being compared as a less emotional and self-pitying version of Emo. Greenwald (2003) states that Scene kids are much like Emo kids, but they generally tend to be more upbeat, confident, and outgoing, and their taste in music is similar, but is usually more mainstream or pop inspired. Emo fashion is inspired by the dark and emotional music they listen to, but Scene kids are attracted to a more colorful apparel, and are usually only inspired by their own creative individuality (Greenwald, 2003, p.125). Emo is simply a style and music genre of emotions, meaning and individuality. When most people think of Emo, they think of people who are sad and suicidal. Emo is not a genre where one has to be involved in self harm, or where one must be incessantly depressed. Those who identify with the Emo genre, generally just want to be different, and see the deeper meaning behind life hardships. Although, Emo followers have an overall negative stereotype, a deeper understanding and compassion for each other can be seen behind their side-swept bang and thick, black-rimmed glasses.

Panic At The Disco

...In the early 2000’s, the genre of pop punk/emo pop was widely popular with the teen generation. Earlier bands, such as Green Day, Blink 182, and Fall Out Boy all set the stage for Panic! At the Disco to release their first album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out on September 27, 2005. The lyrics on the album were composed by the band’s lead guitarist, Ryan Ross. Other main members of the band include lead singer, Brendon Urie, and drummer, Spencer Smith. Even though Panic! At the Disco has continued to release several albums, none of them have ever come close to having the same effect their first album had on the music community. This particular album has a different but catchy sound to it, story-like lyrics, and unique vocalization. To begin,...

Criticism of Siddhartha and Ceremony

...1) Siddhartha- Hermann Hesse A) Archetypal Criticism: Hermann Hesse has incorporated numerous symbols, metaphors and allusions into his work to help the reader understand the story of Siddhartha better. Similarly, Archetypes are also present in this book. The main Archetypal character in the book is Siddhartha. He is a seeker who wants to experience a better, more authentic and more fulfilling life by achieving enlightenment. He fears being trapped and is true to his soul. For example, he leaves the Brahmins, the Samanas and Gotama Buddha in pursuit of more knowledge to fulfill his desire of gaining enlightenment. Similarly, Vasudeva is also another Archetypal character in the story. He serves as a counselor towards Siddhartha and is a role model to him. For example, in the chapter “the ferryman” Siddhartha surrenders to Vasudeva his entire self, even his clothes, in order to follow his example in leading a life of calm fulfillment and wisdom. Along with archetypal characters, archetypal symbols are also present in the book. The River is definitely the most influential archetypal symbol in the book. It represents the flowing of time and transitional phases of the life cycle. For example, whenever a great transition occurred in the book like when Siddhartha left Gotama Buddha and also when he abandoned his wealth he came to the river. When Siddhartha observed the river he learned that the river exists only in the present, it is everywhere at once, upstream...

However, the band was initially formed by guitarist Ben Bruce in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in 2006 with an entirely different lineup before being dismantled the same year. After their first EP was released, they were signed by Sumerian Records, a small record label based out of London. The band officially established in 2008 and released their debut album Stand Up And Scream in 2009. This album defined an entirely new genre and influenced many bands in the years to come, the album blended fast paced metalcore with electronic music while lyrically fitting into the “emo” genre. They later released the very similar Reckless And Relentless (my least favorite) in 2010 followed by From Death to Destiny in 2013. This was an extremely low point for the band, as frontman Danny Worsnop began to struggle with alcoholism and drug use to get himself through live performances, the most notable example is the infamous “Seattle performance,” in which you can find multiple videos of him incoherently yelling, rolling on the ground, and punching fans while on stage. Conflicts with the band members led to him...

They say, “There is no melody: it's just screaming or it’s weird.” Blah blah!! As an African-American female who has a Caribbean background, I am forbidden to listen to “devil’s music”. All the other people who are from my cultural heritage think that it’s “improper” for me to listen to something that’s not what they would like. African-Americans have made many contributions into music like Rap or R&B; if I listen to a different genre, I’m disrespecting my culture. Stereotypes fly high when it comes to my “unhappy music”. Sweeney Todd Hollywood

...Since the introduction of sound to film in the late 1920’s and early 1930s, the musical has remained a constant force in the industry; called “Hollywood’s most durable product” (p 314). From the extravagance and excess of Busby Burkley’s art deco musicals in the 1930s to Arthur Freed’s ‘stable of stars’ including Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, the musical has often made an appeal to a wide range of audiences. As we move from the past to the present however, Sweeney Todd released in 2007 gives an almost bastardized version of what one would call a ‘classical’ musical.
Stylistically, Sweeney Todd fits into several genres of film besides just musicals, including: german expressionism, horror, and exploitation films. Director Tim...

Classification of Rock and Roll Music

...Kendall, Scott A. Instructor Rory Lukins Composition and Language 10/23/2012 Classifications of Rock and Roll Music It is said that music makes the world go round. That is a very true fact. If there was no music the world would be a much lonelier, quieter and boring place to live. Music fills our lives with happiness and sadness. Sometimes it makes us mad. Sometimes it makes us want to dance. It has been around since the invention of man. The love of music starts at a very young age and continues into adulthood and old age. Whatever type of music you listen to is your choice. There are many types of music to choose from. There is Country & Western, Rhythm & Blues, Rap and Hip Hop. There is Jazz and Big Band style music. And lastly but by far not the least is Rock & Roll. Everywhere you go you can hear these types of music. You can hear it in the local shopping malls as background music, and in the churches being sung by the choir or the congregation. You can hear it on your radio at your home or in your car. You can even hear it at your favorite night club being played on a juke box or by a live band. The style of music I listen to is Rock & Roll; therefore, it is what I will be talking about in this essay. Rock & Roll got its start in the 1950’s. It is comprised of Country & Western, and Rhythm & Blues, but played at a much faster upbeat tempo. It was made popular by people like Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee...

Hitler - a Re-Visit

...Adolf Hitler (April 20, 1889 - ????) was the Undisputed Champion of the Art of Ranting. He also had Jewish ancestry, and, rather ironically, was blamed for a mass killing-off of Jews in Europe. They were Jewish, how much more of a reason would you like? He was one of the 20th Century's most misunderstood political revisionists. Many see him as a overweight, perverted, sexually deprived, gay, racist, homophobic, Jew-in-denial, highly functioning autistic. Others see him as humanity's last hope to cleanse the world of the greatest cause of debt on the planet. According to das Juden, during his holiday in Germany, Hitler had a party (complete with fully catered bar-b-que), the members of who were six million , called the Holocaust. In fact, he was a sensitive hero who tried to save the undeserving Jews from the racist Germans that he, an Austrian, loved so much. Hitler was a genius. He was the one who saved Germany from the Great Depression. Among his inventions were the Autobahn system, the Volkswagen cars, the V2 superweapons (in fact the first ballistic missiles in the world), and so on. He also planned to renovate Berlin into a utopia called Welthauptstadt Germania. Up to today, he still holds the high score in IRL Risk. He was undefeated until he went up against fellow sociopathic asshat Joseph Stalin, although Americunts like to think they had something to do with it. He broke new strategic ground with his Blitzkrieg tactics, which effectively meant that he was in your nation...

Expressive Essay

...Expressive Essay (Observation, Ethnography or Memoir) First Draft ENC 1101 – CR Junkins Purpose: What do I want the student to do? In this course, we will explore the two most commonly used forms of writing for college students: expressive writing and academic writing. Expressive writing captures what is important to the writer. In order to succeed, writers must understand themselves. Such writing is deeply personal. Expressive writing is designed to prepare students for writing outside academics—communicating feelings and observations, beliefs and opinions, community and individuality—all skill sets that will enable students to succeed in any discipline or career path. From a learning perspective, expressive writing is often an easier form of writing than academic. It allows students to begin working with such concepts as language, reasoning and mechanics while working with material they find worth discussing. In this assignment, I want students to carefully examine both themselves and their community. What makes their community unique? What is their place within the community? How did their unique, individual personality take shape? Project Overview: How do I want the student to do the assignment?
