Fish has been a food source for the human being for the long period which provides human with the essential elements such as protein. As a natural resource, aquatic species are limited. With the development of fish industry, there is a significant amount of population relies on marine life to survive today. In Canada, the fishing population is around 72,000 (Government of Canada, 2017). In this case, more and more fish is captured at the amount which exceeds the rate they can reproduce; however, intensive overfishing causes threatens to aquatic ecology.

In the past, fishing used to be more sustainable due to the lack of technology to tread into the deep ocean areas. The way people catch fish has changed over the past 60 years. Deep sea conservation …show more content…
The aggregate fish device is used to reduce bycatch and maintain marine biodiversity. It is used to attract fish and make them easier to catch is thought as a sustainable way of fishing. It is essential for customers to learn where the fish in the market is from, and how it is caught. When consumers only buy tuna which is captured sustainably can give the pressure to the industry to follow the sustainable basis.

From a professor’s perspective, fish as an essential part of the ocean can transform marine environment, therefore, overfishing can disturb the sustainable level of the ocean. The amount of big predatory fish’s amount experienced declined in the past few decades due to the intensive exploitation. The disappearance of those fish causes signification alteration in ocean food chain on a global scale. Fisheries industry always target the biggest available fish in the ocean due to their commercial value, when the largest fish population deplete, the medium sized fish become their new interest.

Leigh Howarth, who is a Marine biologist from the University of York suggests that there are many techniques can be used to manage the overfishing and help protect sea habit and promote fish stock recovery. There are three pillars of sustainability which are environmental, social and economic. But the fact is, there is always a conflict between environmental and economic perspective. Scientist suggests protecting 20-30% marine habit around the world while political target to protect 10% world ocean in 2010. Unfortunately, in the year 2015, less than 3% of the world ocean is protected under any type, overfishing is still a significant issue.
