The Truth About Disney

Look at a Vogue magazine; welcome to the imaginary world of the "ideal." Nobody has a bad day, as they are too busy being perfectly happy, perfectly rich and perfectly successful. Everything is make-believe; so much for aspiration! However, walk down the street or look in the mirror and it becomes a case of welcome to the "real" world, us. Where everyone is in all shapes and sizes, colors and ages. Like in the book The Mouse that Roared, the authors shows how Disney attempts to hide behind a cloak of innocence and entertainment, while simultaneously exercising its influence as a major force on both global economics and cultural learning. In the fashion industry I feel that it is the same way, while forty percent of the United States is obese, Vogues magazines and many others show those unreal skinny bodies that everybody is dying to have. The fashion industry has shaped women’s ideals of what to wear and what to look, and until the industry can shift from encouraging people to be a shape which nature never intended them to be, however, the media will continue to form young people’s view of the world, a world that is apparently populated by only thin girls. The words "eat" and "boring" are usually never found in the same sentence, but leave it to a supermodel to accomplish this task. Bodies in a bathing suit, underwear, or a skimpy tank top flood magazines magazines today. How many times have you flipped through the pages of a Vogue magazine and spotted an article about how women should have a good perception of themselves and "celebrate those curves?" However you then turn the pages the only thing you see is skinny no curves at all. The Mass media influences lot teenagers. Therefore, it is much more difficult for them to obtain a body like those of the women in the advertisements, or almost impossible without developing severely disordered eating

The Allegory of the Cave

...The Allegory of the Cave and Disney Movies The Allegory of the Cave is one of many vivid and complex stories in Plato’s book entitled “The Republic”. The Allegory of the Cave is a story about the unseen truth of the outside world. The story takes place underground in a cave where prisoners are forced to watch a show that they believe is what life only consists of. There is a blazing fire set back behind them and a wall where puppets are displayed so that it casts images on the wall in front of the prisoners. Their heads are chained so that the only thing that they are able to see is what is being projected on the wall. For the prisoners, this is all that they know about life and all they have ever known. A prisoner later escapes and finds his way out of the cave and into a world that he did not believe existed. He was blinded not only by the light but blinded from what he missed out on for so long. He was so happy of what he has seen but discouraged at the same time of what the cave has made him believe for such a long period. He traveled back to the cave to tell the others of such a beautiful place above them, but to his dismay, the prisoner’s scolded him and didn’t believe a word he said. For the prisoners, the cave was all they knew and they were angry that someone would try and tell them otherwise. The prisoners didn’t want to believe they were being hidden from the truth. Plato used many metaphors in the story, For instance, I believe that the cave is used...

Disney's Sterilization Aka Poison Candy

...Jonathan Sadie Homeira Foth ENGL 7 May 9th 2013 Disney’s “Sterilization” aka “Poison Candy” What would you say if Disney had something to do with you falling in love with your spouse? What about if Disney had something to do with all the relationships your have today? Most people would think this idea is absurd, yet it isn’t too far from the truth. We all grew up on Disney movies which poses the idea that these movies are a form of mass communication. The stories that where imprinted in our minds when our mind was more like sponges than an independent activist. Just like bed time stories that unleash children’s imagination before a night’s sleep will these same stories unleash a preconceived notion of action in real life. To have a favorite Disney movie is like having a favorite experience imbedded into our subconscious to tell us things such as what is “handsome” or “pretty”. Without noticing, many standards of today are set as we watch our first movie. So the big question is if Disney’s altered perspective of life is helping us live it. The proliferation of educational data that has been created regarding these seemingly innocent cartoon films provide a unique perspective that will influence what films we choose to show to our children. Disney’s sterilization process creates negative effects on children by painting an unrealistic picture, creating dependency issues, inhibiting a good coping system, and lacking confidence in the young. Disney’s interpretation of real...

Easy a

...after generation. I believe Easy A will be joining this group of classic comedies as move generation moves to the next one. What makes Easy A such a great movie, that will last for generations, is its story. About how one lie can change the way everyone see you. It is a relatable and clever movie, with great humor and quotable one-liners. Easy A is about a high school student, Olive Penderghast, played by the talented Emma Stone, finds herself the victim of her school's "rumor mill". When she lies to her best friend Rhiannon, played by Alyson Michalka that she has a date with a nonexistent community college student, so that she doesn’t have to spend the weekend with Rhiannon and her family. The two of them are over heard in the bathroom the next Monday as Olive lies about her encounter, telling Rhiannon that she lost her virginity that weekend with her fictitious boyfriend. The rumor spreads through the school like wild fire; she soon becomes the scandal of the school after the religious fanatic Marianne decides to make her the school outcast. Commercialization of Children's Culture

... The example of Disney will be used as a model to examine the influence of commercialization on children’s culture. Disney who for over 70 years and through generations has infiltrated the world of children, has simultaneously over time marketed itself into permanent existence in the daily lives of young children in America and globally. Within contemporary society the topic of commercialization and children is of high interest questioning whether the subtle and not so subtle insertions of “Disnification” are exploitive feeding on the vulnerability of children with the intention of creating children as future consumers. Thesis: Commercialization of children’s culture is becoming a global issue and in order to make any decisions about whether it should be dismissed as positive or negative is difficult to state unless you take into account various inside and outside factors at play. Understanding the forces playing on this issue such as popular culture is to understand the trends and direction in which society is generally moving. Recognizing too that such processes like commercialization cannot operate in isolation and separate from many parts of society is to identify that indeed popular culture provides the perfect venue for Disney to obtain a more permanent grip on society through the imagination of children and adults alike. Framework and methodology: My framework will firstly discuss popular culture in society today and how it used to be about our values whereas...

Tangeled

...Joseph Reyes February 3, 2016 rjoseph@andrews.edu English Composition II Tangled When talking about Disney fairytales, what is the one thing that most people in America assume will happen in the movie? It would be that a “Prince Charming” will come and save the Princesses in whatever predicament that they are in. For instance, in the Disney Fairytale Snow White. She dies by an evil witch’s spell and the her “Prince Charming” comes and saves her with true love’s kiss. The trend of these movies has continued throughout the years, until a recent changed in one of their recent movies. In the Disney fairytale Tangled, it utilizes the same stereotypes where the main character, Rapunzel, has beauty, she can sing, she has an evil mother, she cleans up around the house, has an animal friend, and the list goes on. Yet the movie itself also pushes against the fairytale expectation. They say that most fairytales focus on the woman of the movie, and that the male figure is barely present. In Tangled, however, there is a focus on men who are much more developed then the typical Prince Charming character. While the roles of women have significantly changed in fairy tales since becoming popular, the roles of men have stayed the same. Aladdin and Its Morals

...on the inside. The moral of the original Middle-Eastern tale 'Arabian Nights' is that greatness and strength comes from within, not from without. This is demonstrated by Aladdin's bravery and intelligence despite his humble upbringing. In Disney's animated musical version of the story, the writers updated this theme to a single phrase, calling Aladdin a 'diamond in the rough'. There are many differences between the movie and the original tale of Aladdin, because the filmmakers believed that the original had an inappropriate moral message. And I have to agree with this for at least two reasons. First, Aladdin never tells the princess who he really is; he becomes a prince thanks to the jinni, but he never considers telling his wife about who he was before that. The original story doesn’t even mention this. Lying and pretending to be someone else is, indeed, something that should not be promoted in a children’s movie. Then, in the original story I really couldn’t stand the princess, Badr al-Budur. She is naïve, has no personality and no opinion, she does what she is told to, and never asks questions. She is so easily tricked, that she almost gets Aladdin killed twice. I’m not sure she even realizes it. In other words, she is merely a puppet that is there to trigger Aladdin’s next adventures, to make him want more than just a comfortable life together with his mother. In respect to all these, I must say Disney’s Aladdin is a much more educational and insightful version. However...

Comparing Sexton And Cinderella

...In Budy’s poem, Snow White is admitting that she and Bashful kissed. Unlike the Disney version, where Snow White was hiding in the woods because of her fear of the queen, she is staying in the woods with the dwarfs because of the kiss she had with Bashful. Snow White represents the dwarfs as her children and makes up the story about her and the prince. She hopes to eat a poison apple in hope that it will give her some kind of “magic sleep” and snatch her away from the plainness of life. Snow White’s definition of magic sleep is going mentally unstable or insane. She wants to forget about her life, and the plainness of it, making her want to experience magic sleep. In the original Disney Snow White, she wasn’t looking for a new life or insanity, but rather to get away from the queen and be with her prince, living happily ever after. Budy also has Snow White converse with the reader in the second half of the poem to emphasize her need and desire of wanting a new...

Kay Siebler Gender Binary Identity

...Trans women and trans feminine people are especially criticized by the binary expectations set forth by society. These expectations, I believe, are specifically valued, validated, and perpetrated by Disney. Although Disney is ridiculously cisgendered and heteronormative, their depictions of how women look, act, and what women desire apply to all feminine presenting and feminine aligned people. Princesses specifically are a major targets for gender binary and gender role brainwashing. As briefly discussed and outlined in Mickey Mouse Monopoly, one of the most fascinating truths is “how little the image of females really change.” There is “the same highly sexualized female body with the big breasts, the tiny waists, the fluttering eyelashes, the coy expressions, and the seductress.” These all influence young viewers when they are first learning about and understanding the world. Disney’s main audience of children are extremely impressionable. By introducing and constantly reinforcing these expectations of women, of course young children are going to be...

Marxist Alladin

...To what extent does Disney’s presentation of the Aladdin legend reflect and present the ruling class ideology? In this essay I will be focusing on the ruling class ideology that is shown frequently in the Disney version of Aladdin. I will discuss the relevance of Jafar, the power and reputation of the Genie and the beauty of Jasmine who Aladdin feels he himself doesn’t deserve. The other concepts that I will briefly touch upon is the false class consciousness theory, this is where the proletariats don’t know they are being exploited by the bourgeoisie. Also, I will explore ruling class exploitation; this is where the ruling class take advantage of the working class for their own personal gain. Throughout the whole of the story a ruling class ideology is very apparent, and towards the start of the book it starts to represent Aladdin as a ‘thief’ and a character that may have been this way his whole life. You could say that throughout the story, he is trying to break sociological norm and make his way to the top of society. Members of a lower class of society truly believe that they can’t make it to the top, and in truth this isn’t correct. Members of the Bourgeoisie sell us a pipe dream and would say that they have every right to get to the top, but the lower class suffer from false class consciousness and through social aspects such as media, sport and religion this consciousness is reflected in a capitalist view. The working class feel that they have to have done something...
