...to me seems like the perfect handbook for college seniors such as myself. In tackling the question of what distinguishes top performers in times of uncertainty, the authors first define what exactly a top performer is and then highlights the three key ingredients that these individuals were discovered to possess. 10Xers are leaders who built companies that started from a position of vulnerability, rose to beat their respective industries by at least 10 times, and did so in the midst of instability, crisis, and uncertainty. They are characterized by three behaviors: fanatic discipline, empirical creativity and productive paranoia. Towards the end of the book, the authors also explore luck and how much of an influence it has on successful or unsuccessful outcomes. They hone in on the notion of return on luck, arguing that fortune is but one variable in the equation of success. “Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure.” –George Edward Woodberry What is success? And more importantly how does one obtain it? Some would be surprised to know that some of the greatest success stories came only after a myriad of failures. But it is no surprise that the recipe for success is a complicated one. Jim Collins and Morten Hansen spent nine years researching what it takes in order for a company to be successful and thrive in this fast-paced ever changing world we live in. In the book Great By Choice Collins seems to have decoded a large part of the...

...critical thinking is taking a step back and performing the most reasonable action after analyzing every possible solution. Critical Thinking can be broken down into three phases: Discipline- the ability to stop action; Conceptualize- gather information; and Decision- take the appropriate action. Phase one in critical thinking, Discipline, is the ability to stop from making a decisive action without critical forethought. Everyone does not have the discipline to stop and think of the repercussion of his or her immediate action. Phase two is Conceptualization, which is the gathering of information and analyzing all possible solutions. For example during phase two, a person will perform analysis of the immediate situation, observation of the surrounding, and will visualize all viable solutions prior to committing to an action. The final phase is the action phase, taking the appropriate action decided upon. To further elaborate the three phases of critical thinking, I will break down the example in an Internet video, Callahan (2103) states that, “We all have Emotional stress affect all phases in the critical thinking process. For example, it could prevent a person from stopping his or her immediate action, prevent a person from making a concise decision, and finally a person could perform the worst possible action intentionally. As a Police Officer, I apply critical thinking in my everyday daily routine. For example, Reference: Scriven &...

...General Franklin Eliser Savage Leadership Skills Watching 12’o clock High I feel , it is a paradigm example of leadership in face of adversity. It is set at Archbury in the English midlands, where the “hardluck”918th Bomb Group has accumulated the highest loss rate and the worst bombing effectiveness record in all of Eighth Air Force. The group is very low in morale and General Pritchard, head of Bomber Command, concludes that the problem is the group commander, Col. Keith Davenport, whose leadership style has allowed discipline to erode and whose over identification with the crews has encouraged them to feel sorry for themselves. Then General Pritchard replaces the popular Davenport with Franklin Savage, Savage proceeded to rebuild the discipline, faith, confidence, pride and courage of his team by methods that are fully applicable in today's highly competitive business environment, which are: provide your team with autonomy and do not let them get caught up in fear. I will support my statement with a couple of examples from the movie of what tactics General Savage applied; Train the pilots on what they need to do and set clear goals. They are shown the path to success and the definition of success; Provide challenging missions. With success on these missions, the pilots get a sense of confidence; Let the bomber crews succeed on their own. Although General Savage leads by example, he often lets others lead missions and help craft tactics. This policy further builds the...

...them answering a basic question, “How do I parent?” This brings up an examination of Parenting styles: the good ones, the bad ones, and the worst ones. In 2011, Amy Chua authored a best-selling book “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother,” giving her the label, “Tiger Mom.” This book “suggested Chinese mothers tend to raise more successful children because of strict, cultural tendencies,” and had critics everywhere discussing the damaging effects this parenting style would have not only on her children, but Asian children in general. 5 years later, The Today Show revisited Chua and her two daughters, now adults, to observe just how damaging Tiger Parenting seems to be. As a response to the sudden limelight of Tiger Parenting, the American Psychology Association released an article to further explain and give insight into Tiger Parenting. Tiger Parenting can be defined as “those who practice positive and negative parenting strategies simultaneously.” Tiger Parenting, to some level, is primarily seen in Asian families. It has an unhealthy restriction social interaction and development with other children. For example, Amy Chua’s daughters were not allowed to “watch TV, play computer games, have sleepovers or play dates.” Academically, Tiger Parents find anything less than an A to be disgraceful. It has extreme levels of psychological discipline. For example, Amy Chua’s daughter mentions, in the Today Show article of remembering her mother, “threatening to throw my toys on the fire...

...parenting types. Authoritative parenting is an affectionate type of parenting. They do discipline their children and show love for them as well. Douglas Hardwick, Ph.D. has stated authoritative parents “set limits for their children and expect their children, to follow family rules”. Children brought up in authoritative parenting homes have the best outcomes, however; not all children are exposed to this type of parenting. Permissive parents are similar to authoritative parents; however they apply diminutive control in their parenting. Rules may be set but are not enforced which makes the child have “lower impulse control and difficulty handling everyday frustrations” according to Dr. Hardwick. In addition to the permissive style parenting that has little control there is still another style that has no control. Authoritarian style parents follow the “because I said so” ruling. Children do not revolve around their lives. Children from authoritarian parents are more likely to be underachievers in their education goals and have meager social skills. Douglas Hardwick, Ph.D. states “the children of authoritarian parents tend to lack initiative and self-reliance”. Finally, uninvolved parents are exactly what the title states uninvolved. Children from these types of parents are more likely to use drugs and have a criminal record by their teen years. Douglas Hardwick, Ph.D. noted “the worst developmental...

...DR: My Pedagogical Experience dr University of Texas Pan American June 11, 2012 My Pedagogical Experience Introduction: Like most South Texas residents, I come from a large family. Unfortunately this largely Hispanic population has several members in their families that lack a proper education. For example, my mother dropped out of school so she can support a family. As a single parent, my mother strived everyday to maintain us, so that we would have everything that we needed for school. My mother has always supported me in my education, and she always pushed me to do better so I would get a diploma and continue my education to get a bachelors degree. It is extremely important that I have a successful future. I not only have to think about myself but for my new family. By having an educational background not only will I provide my family with a secure and stable future but also hope to give the kids in my community a chance to have a bright future as well. I was first inspired to become a teacher when I attended Kelly Elementary. Ms. Palacios, the best teacher I ever had, was truly one of a kind. To this day I have not seen any teachers that have the true passion to teach and inspire young minds like Ms. Palacios was able give me. Several of them are just there for the pay and because they get several days off. Junior High was truly an eye awakening experience for me. For the first time I felt pressured to do better in order to graduate in the top ten...

...1. Compare and contrast the Auburn System and Eastern State Penitentiary systems. Define and describe each including the structure, history, and inherent problems? The Auburn System and the Eastern State Penitentiary systems were put together to teach the inmates lessons and orders and discipline. They wanted theses systems to change a criminal into a law-abiding citizen. Teach the inmate a trade; rehabilitate the offender so he can become an asset in industrial growth. Both prison systems plans wanted obedience, order, a regular routine of labor and both systems wanted the prisoners to be isolated in some kind of way. The Eastern State penitentiary system structure had a tower in the middle similar to an octagon and all the wings went into it. Like an X with many other radiating lines. The Auburn Prison looked more like buildings. The Auburn system was known as a silent system. They called the Auburn system this because the prisoners slept alone. Under the plan it was one prisoner to a cell. The prisoners were only allowed to come together to eat and work in the prison shops together. The prisoners could not talk or even glance at each other under the Auburn System; this is why they called it the silent system. The Eastern State Penitentiary System was known as the separate system. They called the Eastern State Penitentiary System this because the prisoners were put and kept in their jail cells the entire time they spent in the penitentiary. The prisoners...

...The main type of execution is now lethal injection, which involves a vaccination as a way to commensurate with a capital form of discipline. One argument for people who are for the death penalty is the cost of sustaining a criminal to be charged with life in prison. However, according to Richard C. Diete, a juris doctor, “the costs of a capital case begin long before the sentence is carried out. Experienced prosecutors and defense attorneys must be assigned and begin a long period of investigation and pre-trial hearings. Jury selection, the trial itself, and initial appeals will consume years of time and enormous amounts of money before an execution is on the horizon”. To convey another interpretation, he proves that life in prison is not as costly or expensive as the death penalty in the long run. Cases that do not include the death penalty have an estimated cost of $740,000, but on the other hand, cases resulting with the death sentence have an estimated cost of $1.26 million. Furthermore, having the death penalty has not decreased the rate of crimes being committed. Based on a chart created by The Death Penalty Information Center, states without the death sentence have reduced crime rather than those with the sentence. This is simply because having this style of discipline does not discourage others. Therefore, it still yet to be proven effective in the United States. To...

...HINDUISM HUM130 07/29/2012 HINDUISM In Hinduism there are three major philosophical systems “Samkhya, Advaita Vedanta, and Yoga. Each of these systems represents a path towards enlightenment. Although the underlying theory and beliefs of these systems are similar, there are also striking dissimilarities between each philosophy. SAMKHYA The Samkhya is thought to be the oldest system of Hindu belief. Founded by the mythical sage Kapila, Samkhya teaches that there are two states of reality. The first state; known as the Purusha, or self, which is eternally wise, pure, and free, beyond chance, beyond cause. (citation needed) The other is Prakriti, the cause of the material universe. All suffering is said to come from out confusion of Prakriti with Purusha. Being able to separate and understand the two is a key part of finding true transcendent reality. Advaita Vedanta Unlike the Samkhya philosophy Advaita Vedanta teaches that there is only one single reality. The current view of Advaita Vedanta comes from the teachings of Shankara. The old views of Vedanta taught that the human self (Atman) is an emanation of Brahman. Shankara’s teachings state that Atman and Brahman are actually one and the same, and that the material life is not another reality as is believed in Samkhya but an illusion. The absolute spirit (Brahman) is considered to be the essence of everything with no beginning and no end. An analogy that...
