I'm most proud of the blessings that God has bestowed upon me, in my life. He's given me the vision to truly see that you can fall down, but you can still get back up. Hopefully I'll learn from my mistakes and have the opportunity to strengthen and improve the next thing I do - Martin Lawrence. I chose this quote because it truly relates to me. Many of the circumstances we go through in life are either to develop us as a person or were tested to see how we resolve such situation. Tikkun Olam, I really like the sound of this word and for its meaning; which means world repair. It implies that each person has a hand in working towards to change, improve, and fix its earthly surroundings. It implies the betterment of humanity’s existence as well …show more content…
Two of which I really enjoyed and learned a lot from are The Pearl and To Heal a Fractured World. For example in the book The Pearl Kino sees the Pearl as a way to fulfill all his dreams and desires. The value of Pearl changes overtime because of town’s people, buyers, and Kino. The pearl is especially valuable to Kino; he sees his entire life dependent on this pearl. He sets many dreams such as marriage in church, well dressed, buying a harpoon and a rifle; lastly that his son will go to school. This book assembled all major aspects such as trust, greed, culture, anger, happiness, death, and evil. Many of us in reality seek true happiness but it depends where that happiness lies. One can be happy being rich, famous, or just living a simple lifestyle. We seek happiness in our job, relationships, money and other profitable investments. We are pacing in this fast society where everyone wants to achieve their goals and dreams in life; which is good but one should 'stop and smell the flowers'. This particular saying is a reminder, a message, for each of us, to stop and enjoy the day, the moment and the minute because time passes quickly. Be thankful to your loved ones. Another text that impacted me is To heal a fractured world. My favorite quote is “We are here to make a difference, to mend the fractures of the world, a day at a time, an act at a time, for as long as it takes to make it a place of justice and compassion where the lonely are not alone, the poor not without help; where the cry of the vulnerable is heeded and those who are wronged are heard. ‘Someone else's physical needs are my spiritual obligation.’ In my personal perspective I believe as human beings we have some duties to fulfill for the better. It is our job to make the world a healthier and friendly environmental place for us, our children, and for the sake of

...As I write this, it is Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish year 5778. For the next ten days, Jews will be contemplative, looking inward critically, hoping to improve ourselves. Jews believe in Tikkun Olam, which translates loosely to “repairing the world;” we believe Jews have an obligation outside of ourselves, to the planet and other people. As Rabbi reminded us, there are millions suffering across the globe and whatever we can do, we must do, to help. However, this idea is not only a religious one. During the turbulent 1960s, my family worked for civil rights, assisting the Fair Housing Council of Los Angeles in desegregating our white neighborhood. Moreover, after the Watts riots in 1965, my parents volunteered for, and my sisters and I attended, a literacy pre-school program there called Head Start. This program was free for any child, but largely minority populated; my parents believed representation of whites was also necessary. These examples of engaging and connecting with others are fundamentally...

Perhaps that’s why. The first and still the only in the clergy association. Or maybe it is because of where she is from. No one from San Francisco had come to live here before. Occasionally an outsider moved to this town, in the northern tier of the state, but the flow is almost always in the other direction, away from, not into. And the few that do come to stay aren’t from California, a place that to this day, decades after it had long faded, is believed to be an incubator for radical lifestyles and subversive politics.   4   Arthur  Dobrin     Or perhaps her name—Ailanthus—a strange one, where here, if you are named after flora it is Rose or Violet or another sweet smelling flower that could be grown in the garden. It must be a name given to her by a hippie mother, a band given to bestowing peculiar names on their children. No one knows of a girl being named after a tree. They never heard of an ailanthus...
