Time Traveling

My name is Wanda Castro and I am a world-renowned art historian and author. I have this special ability to travel through time to any period of history I wish to explore. Today I will take you on a journey along with me; we will make three stops to three different time-periods exploring art from three civilizations. The first will be the Mesopotamian civilization, the second the Egyptian civilization, and the third and final destination the Roman civilization.
Prehistoric/Mesopotamian Civilization
Well it is time to take a seat, strap on my seatbelt, and set the dials for my first stop the Mesopotamian civilization and on this journey, my destination in this civilization will be the Ziggurat of king Urnammu (Nanna), and it is an architectural piece of art. Hey if you get a little nauseas, there is a barf bag in the seat pocket, for the first timers, off we go.
The Great Ziggurat of Ur is an ancient Sumerian ziggurat in Dhi Qar Province, Iraq. The Sumerian King Urnammu (Nanna) and his son Shulgi built the ziggurat in approximately the 21st century BC during the Third Dynasty of Ur, in dedication to the moon God Nanna. They were believed to be dwelling places for the gods and each city had its own patron God. Only priests were permitted on the ziggurat or in the rooms at its base, and it was their responsibility to care for the gods and attend to their needs. The priests were very powerful members of Sumerian society. Ziggurats usually found in the center of villages. This structure-constructed in ca. 2500-2050 BCE of sunbaked mud brick. The massive step pyramid measures 210 feet (64m) in length, 150 feet (46m) in width and more than 100 feet (30m) in height. As I walk through the halls of this temple, I believe it reveals that the creator wanted closeness with the God he created this temple for, hence the reason for building, it on raised platform. This piece represents how serious the Mesopotamian civilizations outlook on their religion, worship, and gods were to them. Mesopotamians surpassed historical bounds with this piece of architecture, with the structure of this temple. I would think it impossible to build anything of this magnitude, with involving steel, cranes, cement and anything else it would take to build a building in my day and age. As for the present time I explore how art and culture from previous civilizations influenced this piece I find no evidences linking influence from a previous civilization for this temple. Unless I take a look at the Neolithic period and the architectural structure the cromlech, or circle of stones possessing a religious purpose, known as Stonehenge, located on the Salisbury Plain in Wilshire, England, and completed ca. 2000 BCE. In addition, to the Neolithic civilization using mud brick to building structures, the Ziggurat of King Urnammu (Nanna) used the same mud brick to build their temples.
I wonder how the Ziggurat is related to artwork within the same civilization, well Art and Culture states that the Sumerian domestic architecture seems to have consisted largely of houses that were square or rectangular in plan and built of mud brick. When looking at the Ziggurat you can see the relation in style, plan, shape, and the material it was built with. This piece still has meaning and value in modern-day cultures; because today there are cultures that still believe in different gods, rituals they practice, build temples for their gods and these cultures have passed these beliefs down from generation to generations. Now it is time to leave this place in time and continue on to our next stop.

Egyptian Civilization
I fasten my seatbelt once again as I go on to my next destination, I will set the dial for Egyptian civilization, I am sure by now you have the hang of it no barf bags for this trip. While in Egypt, I will explore more architecture. The three pyramids at Giza, which includes the Great Pyramid, dominate the Egyptian landscape. They stand today as a symbol of ancient Egypt’s grandeur.
The Art form: the Great Pyramid of Giza
This pyramid also known as or also called-Khufu's Pyramid, Pyramid of Khufu, and Pyramid of Cheops is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now Cairo, Egypt, and is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that survives intact. Through my research, I believed this pyramid built as a tomb for Fourth dynasty Egyptian King Khufu (Cheops in Greek) and constructed over a 20-year period concluding around 2560 BC. This superior piece of artwork: built of more than two million lime stone blocks, and assembled by laborers without the help of beasts, specialized tools, or even the wheel. This Great Pyramid is 280 Egyptian royal cubits tall, 146.6 meters, (480.97 feet, or about 50 stories) however: if we return to our time we will have to factor in erosion and the loss of its pyramiding, to get its current height, which is 138.8 m (455 feet). Each base side was 440 royal cubits, 230.5 meters, (756.2 feet). A royal cubit measures 0.524 meters. The Great Pyramid total mass estimated at 5.9 million tons.
As I enter in the Great Pyramid, it contains both ascending and descending passages. There are three chambers inside the Great Pyramid. The chambers arranged centrally, on the vertical axis of the pyramid. One chamber unfinished, cut into the bedrock upon which the pyramid was built. It is the largest of the three, however unfinished, only rough-cut into the rock. The other passage leads to the Grand Gallery, in which it splits again and one of those tunnels leads to the Queen's Chamber. The meaning of this piece was to provide a resting place for the kings and his wives and to provide the king with everything he will need for the afterlife. I believe as I explore the inner chambers of this pyramid and just from the appearance of everything inside. I believe the aspect of the Egyptian civilization and its cultural development that the Great pyramid represents those pharaohs considered they divine human beings and would consequently return to the gods when they died. That is why the pyramids designed to soar to heaven.
Certain features of the massive creation remind me of a previous civilization called Mesopotamian they have temple called the Ziggurats. The ziggurats and the pyramids are similar in shape and structure, but the ziggurats are built with mud bricks and the pyramids are built with limestone. The ziggurats have flat tops and the pyramids come to a point. I have ponder the thought of how the pyramids relate to artwork within the same civilization, they were built to last forever, hence the limestone and granite and this relates to the Egyptian concept of an afterlife and the mummification of their dead and the materials they used to create most of their artwork. Whatever the Egyptians built or created was created to last and with stand the test of time. As for the Great Pyramids, having meaning and value in modern-day cultures, the meaning and value is of how we lay our dead to rest. We do not build pyramids now; however they are embalmed, placed in coffins and we do build Columbarium and Mausoleum. Well, this is it for this place in time now we must continue to our final destination the Roman civilization.
Roman civilization One more place to visit and this final destination the dial is set for the Roman civilization. Therefore, I will fasten my seatbelt once again because I always time travel the safe way. Once in Roman I will make a stop to explore more architecture the Colosseum. The Colosseum is a magnificent and grand piece of art that is said to be the most famous building in the world.
The art form: the Colosseum in Rome
I finally made it to The Colosseum in Rome, Italy, it oval bowl measures 620 feet (189m) by 513 feet (157m) and it is 156 feet (48m) high. Emperor Vespasian built the Colosseum with the assists of his sons, Titus and Domitian, and it open to the public in AD 80; this structure took nine years to build. Laborers quarried stone, workers hauled all the stones necessary to build the Colosseum while masons carved the stone in the appropriate shapes. The Colosseum is Rome’s largest amphitheater and can seat 50,000 spectators. This oversized Colosseum used to stage gladiator fights and wild beast shows, this is evident from carcasses of dead animals slain by gladiators in battle. One of the most famous buildings in the world, lit up at night. The Colosseum holds gladiator fights to death, sacrifices, and can be flooded to conduct mock naval battles for the enjoyment of up to 50,000 people.
As walk through the Colosseum hallways and explore this structure, it was merely designed for pleasure of the Roman’s and it creator. The gladiatorial fights that took place in the Colosseum were known as munera. This term meant “offerings to the dead.” It derived from the fact that such fights originated as part of funeral rites. The Romans influence can from a custom from another Italian people, the Etruscans. They believed that when a prominent man died, his spirit could not reach the afterlife without a blood sacrifice. Therefore, they staged fights to the death at funerals. Over time, the Romans transformed these private rituals into large-scale public shows. I think the Colosseum relates to artwork within the same civilization, by the slaying that accuses within the Colosseum, Roman artwork depicts war, gladiator fights, and venation (fights between man and beast). The Colosseum still has meaning and value in the modern-day cultures because we still build Colosseums, but they are now known as stadiums and arenas. In addition, to our gladiators are now our athletes, football player, basketball players, soccer players, and baseball players.
I have reached the end of my journey and have explored three different styles of architectures, in three different places in time and three different civilizations. Moreover, my time travel has ended, I must return to my own period in time to continue my work. Once you read about this trip of time travel to the Prehistoric/Mesopotamian civilization, Egyptian civilization, and Roman civilization, I only hope as you read this, it is as you were along on the trip experiencing these beautiful places as if you were there in that particular place in time.

Time Traveling Historian

...Time Traveling Historian Gina York HUM/205 October 14, 2012 William Devine Time Traveling Historian As a child I often pondered what it would have been like to live in another time. A time far removed from the time I currently lived in. Would it have been as exciting to live in then as I imagined it to be in my head and would it look anything remotely like I had envisioned it in my “mind’s eye”? In order for me to finally realize my childhood dream I decided to take it upon myself to build a time machine. The question is once I got the time machine built, where would it take me? Would I go back into the past or go forward into the future? I decided that I would choose to go back into the past simply because the future is still open for change but the past has been written; but as an author I was curious to know, had the past been written accurately? I decided that this would be my task. I will travel back in time to verify that what I read in my humanities books was correct. I have tasked myself with a formidable question. What point in time do I want to travel to? How hard it will be to make that decision. Indeed, making the choice turned out to be difficult, but I came to the conclusion that the period I chose to travel back to must have some type of cultural or artistic significance. Of course any given time period produced some kind of cultural or artistic significance. My dilemma was finally resolved when I came to the conclusion that I would simply start the...

...Time Traveling If I were to travel through time I would travel back in time. I would travel back in time to the time period of 1920s-1980s in the United States of America. Another reason why I would travel back in time would be in the time period of 1776-1820s in the United States of America. Then my final destination would be the Jurassic Age to see the dinosaurs. As you were reading/hearing what I said I hope that you assume that I like U.S.A. history and how dinosaurs were like. I would see a pleather of things in the time period on 1920s-1980s. For instance, I would get tutored by Albert Einstein himself. Also I will also purchase ten pairs of Back to the Future shoes, and then sell them in the present for profit. I will also see what Northern Cambria (Spangler/Barnesboro) was like. Throughout these years that I would travel, I would get myself different types of suits and get a mint-conditioned Johnny Cash Album –the rare one. The next time period would be from 1776 to the 1820s to see what old America was like. For instance, I would look for George Washington to see what he looked like and to hear how he spoke. Next I would see the Declaration of Independence being made and actually be part of their conference for the Declaration of Independence. Also, since I am a coin collector, I would take hundreds of the first coins that were made in the U.S.A. I will also, from a distance with binoculars, watch how the War of 1812 unraveled and took form. Most likely, the final...

Time Traveling

...Since the beginning of recorded history many different types of artwork have been discovered around the world, and the study of all the art forms have provided much history that leads up to the modern times. The facts surrounding each piece of art tell me a story, but I want to know the entire story about every famous piece of art around the world. What if I could travel back through time to each period in which every famous artwork was created? I could tell a firsthand experience about why it was created, and what the purpose was for the piece. What if I told you that I already had, and that I have already wrote a book about my first hand experiences? Here is a few of my favorite chapters in my new book for you to preview. Roman Civilizations I traveled to Rome around 80 C.E. and I witnessed a firsthand experience of the famous amphitheater, “The Flavian Colosseum.” I could not believe the beauty of this architectural structure at its young age. Since visiting it in modern times is nothing like seeing it in action, and watching the shows there was extremely entertaining. Many theaters were created in the state around this era because of the states policy to provide entertainment to the public, and in the Colosseum specifically the people were entertained with shows of bloody battles between two humans, humans and animals, and two animals (Benton & DiYanni, 2007). The cost for this architectural wonder is still unknown, but the Emperor Titus raided the city of Jerusalem...

Time Traveling to a Healthy Diet

...Andrew Scott ENG 101 Mr. Stafford 5 September 2014 Time-Traveling to a Healthy Diet It is peculiar to think about traveling back in time into the pre industrialized era when everything about the way you lived would be entirely different compared to now. Think about the food alone, and how crops were grown in season, and were stowed for the off season, and back when products did not have a shelf life of weeks, months, and sometimes years. In the reading “Escape from the Western Diet” by Michael Pollan, Pollan states that the way we eat now is much less healthy then the way our ancestors ate. Within this essay I reflect on how I use to be addicted to sugar, how it made me feel, and how that is exactly what the food industry had planned. I also talk about how the new supposed “healthier options” may just be new ideas for a new product line. To conclude, I will discuss how GMOs are put in almost everything we eat just to make it cheaper for the producer, despite the fact that GMOs are horrible for the human body. After reading this article, one will be aware of the proper way to eat, and the benefits of throwing away the western diet. Most people are not aware that sugar can be more addicting than cigarettes, and it is that reason that sugar is put in many foods we eat today. Growing up I was lucky enough to have been passed down my mother’s sweet tooth. Along with that sweet tooth came 3 cavities before I turned 12. It did not take long after that when I was faced...

Time Traveling, Art Historian

...I have had the greatest adventure traveling back in time visiting a few periods in history and I want to share my experiences with everyone. The first period I visited was the Egyptian Civilization, particularly the period of The Great Pyramids. After that I traveled to central Italy for a look at the Roman Civilization wanting to learn about the Etruscans and see the Tomb of the Reliefs. Finally I traveled to Milan during the Italian Renaissance to see the painting of The Last Supper by Leonardo de Vinci. Egypt is bustling during this period in time as the people are building The Great Pyramid for their Pharaoh and divine ruler Cheops. Cheops is the second Pharaoh of the fourth dynasty of Egypt and rules a unified country along with relatives and administrators. He is also the Pharaoh that commissioned the building of The Great Pyramid, which would become one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The Great Pyramid is built as a tomb from which Cheops or his spirit will ascend to the heavens and the sun God RA, who is believed to be the father of all things. The Egyptians believed that their body goes on in an afterlife. To the Egyptians the afterlife is a culmination of their lives work. The Pharaohs strive for a good afterlife and all of the people of the Pharaoh’s dynasty strive for and work toward that same goal. Part of what makes this civilization and culture so productive is the way they work for the unified causes of pleasing the Gods and having a good afterlife...

It was submitted to theaters in 2009 by the Starz/Anchor Bay production company. Directed by Peter Hyams and starring Jesse Metcalf, Michael Douglas, and Amber Tamblyn, this movie is a riveting thriller that focuses on a successful DA that will do whatever it takes to win a case. I chose this film because it was fairly recent and the plot focused on the office of a District Attorney. In the movie, a district attorney, Martin Hunter (Michael Douglas) has a nearly flawless record of convicting criminals and surely has aspirations for the governor’s office. When ambitious rookie journalist, C.J. Nicholas (Jesse Metcalf) begins investigating Hunter for tampering with evidence to secure his convictions, the story takes an interesting turn. C.J., with the help of his videographer, frames himself as a murder suspect to make a grand attempt to catch the D.A. in an act of corruption. Assistant D.A. Ella Crystal (Amber Tamblyn) becomes romantically involved with C.J. and must choose between her recently convicted boyfriend and her potentially corrupt boss. Ella chooses to believe and help her boyfriend, thereby putting her own career and eventually life in jeopardy in order to obtain incriminating proof that puts the fate of both C.J's innocence and Hunter's reputation...

Orion was a talented hunter, very handsome and famous young man who one day, during a hunt saw Artemis and the two fell madly in love. During the following weeks the two dined, hunted together but never slept together, as Artemis still held her oath regarding her virginity her scared duty. Apollo, her twin brother, grew fearful that their relationship would soon make her break her oath. One day as he was riding through the sky, he looked down and saw Orion swimming in the ocean below and his sister lying on the beach. Troubled by their actions he formed a plan so he drove his chariot to the beach to speak with Artemis. After greeting her, Apollo suggested a contest to test if she was truly skilled with her bow. It was well known that Apollo was the most skilled archer but Artemis had proven herself time and time again regarding her skill.
