Although a cure has not yet been found for misophonia and most likely will not be found, just like any other neurological or psychological disorder, various treatments have been tested out which have shown to further minimize the physical and physiological symptoms produced by misophonia. Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) entails teaching people with misophonia how to improve their ability to tolerate certain noises (Dryden-Edwards). Although this has worked for a few misophonic individuals, it is not recommended. Tinnitus retraining therapy focuses more on individuals with tinnitus which is the continuous ringing inside of the ear. This idea is a form of systematic desensitization, the exposure to anxiety-triggering stimuli to lessen its effects. Desensitization is a type of therapy typically used to treat phobias. However, tinnitus retraining therapy is more so related to balancing out frequencies. Another option as a treatment is memory reconsolidation therapy, developed in the Joseph LeDoux lab at the New York University by neuroscientists, which involves changing the physiological response to the trigger sound. This has been successfully tested in rodents and is currently undergoing trial in human beings for posttraumatic stress disorder and for phobias (Brout). If further research proves that misophonia is closely intertwined with PTSD and phobias, the type of therapy would best suit misophonia. A quick and easy, but temporary, treatment is the use of earplugs or earbuds to minimize the sound of triggering stimuli in the surrounding environment. However, this treatment may result in isolation from social interactions and a criticism from those in the
