...To Drill or Not to Drill? HUM/111 March 2, 2013 Omar George We need to continue drilling in areas of our country that are not currently being explored. Drilling here is not going to lower gas prices and will not do anything for land or our beaches. We run the risk of more oil spills, and the large amounts of money and years that it takes to clean up after the oil spills when there is another disaster such as the oil spill in The Gulf of Mexico on April 20,2010. According to Eric Draper who represents Protect Florida’s Beaches and the Florida Auduban Society “drilling will not help increase revenues, will not lower gasoline prices and will not help the energy industry . There are no good reasons that we need to bother our beaches and put our marine life in danger to drill in areas when we have other areas that are currently not being explored. Freeing America from dependency on foreign oil is a great idea but, it cannot affect or society, water and marine life. It cannot cost us unnecessary money to do this when our economy is already struggling. There are benefits that are recognizable like states receiving a share of the royalties. “The amount resulted to an additional $65.6 million dollars for Alabama, Alaska, California, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas in the federal fiscal year 2007” according to Daniel C. Vick of The Tribune Business News. The benefits are there but, do they outweigh...

... Hum / 111 Version 5 To Drill or not to Drill By: Kelly Dray Date: 09/11/2012 Teacher: Cindy Carbajal I would have to say that when it comes to the situation of oil and expressing my own opinion that I think drilling be a better choice of opinion. There are several options and choices that may or may not be best of for the interest of Drilling or not. The States create many and plenty of way’s, choices, ideas, and solutions to use or pick from, and the way it seems to follow it does include the information many from the outside source such as the public would like to suggest in their opinion or word of ideas to help improve the oil and it make the resources easier and better. That in my opinion would be away to reduce the cost of gas. The oil has fallen so far below and then again and has gone back up in its cost and it has caused the prices to increase over time. Obama talks on how he prefers to work with using the idea of going green, but in my opinion of choice it will cost a lot of money for the states needs and the item to repair the windmills. Drilling I say be4 better we then will not have to depend on other states and be independent for ourselves when it came to drilling oil. Just to imagine the cost of one damage windmill is what and where we financially are now makes me choose to drill. I also believe...

...To Drill or Not To Drill Hum/111 1/25/13 Angela Funk To Drill or Not To Drill As the population in the United States increases, so is the need to keep up with the energy demand. Developing new energy sources such as solar, wind, clean coal, natural gas and nuclear power the US can become less dependent on foreign countries. Although off shore drilling is a good resource that has been in existence for years, with the recent oil explosion (2010) and 11 lives and a massive spill of oil in the Gulf of Mexico, that had a major affect on the economy and the wildlife caused the US to take a look at alternative resources for energy. The option of alternative resources allows the US to be more self- sufficient and could overall be less cost effective for the US. The perceptual blocks that I am experiencing with these assignments is the various pros and cons that come with both off-shores drilling & using alternative resources. Off –shore drilling already in place and with the drilling moratorium expanding into the Mediterranean and off the coast of East Africa after a hug discovery of natural gas. However “Exploration in deepwater fields remains dangerous because of high temperatures and high pressure when drilling 6,000 feet or more under the sea floor”. (Krauss & Broder, 2012). On the other hand with alternative resources we would no longer have to rely on other countries to supply our energy because it would be created here in the US. Research and testing does take...

...Assignment: To Drill or Not to Drill? That Is the Question Mayce Torres HUM/111 June 5, 2011 Bethany Bigler Assignment: To Drill or Not to Drill? That Is the Question Throughout time we have seen the changes of use and misuse of our natural resources. Tapping into these sources have pros and cons. Now in the year 2011 we have serious concerns about our way of living, the planet, the wars. President Obama has pushed forward his agenda to free America from dependency on foreign oil and proposes that this will enhance America the great in many ways included the growth of new work opportunities. It is absolutely true that for any transformation we must see a wide spread revolution. Is the revolution part we all fear as it is a testing and difficult time we all must go through to be able to succeed in the end. We all know the energy we consume today is not renewable energy not to mention that the energy we consume causes many deaths via the current war. Today, we can see all of these changes happening from buying a Hybrid car to buildings powered by the solar system. We can see issues of other societies such as Spain trying to go green but have not been successful. The difference is that America has a democratic open to all politics as we work together collectively towards a successful self sustainable...

...To Drill or Not To Drill HUM/111 April 1, 2012 To Drill or Not To Drill It is believed that the United States has enough oil to sustain the needs of the people and not hurt the environment. The United States would no longer have to rely on foreign countries for oil or any other petroleum needs. Since the United States has an abundance of land; drilling should be used to capture the oil that has settled on that land. Since the United States is the third largest oil producer, we should stop getting oil imported from other countries. If Congress and environmentalists say that it is safe to start drilling, then let the drilling begin. The United States produces 10 percent of the world’s oil, but consumes 24 percent (Baird, 2012). Just think what we could save on import taxes and fees if the United States used only what it produced. There have been so many advances in technology in the past couple of decades, resulting in safer drilling techniques then those back in 1975. Blowout preventers to computer-controlled well data have been designed to help reduce and even prevent disasters. On July 14, 2008, President George W. Bush lifted a 1990 executive order that was put in place by the first President Bush banning new offshore drilling, but in August 2008, a 1982 congressional ban was still in place (Baird, 2012). Since there are new advances in technology and safety measures, new sites should be explored. The United States has many wasteful energy habits,...

...To Drill or Not to Drill? HUM 111 Week 2 Assignment One of the hottest topics from the 2008 Presidential election was to drill or not to drill. It was one of the main talking points of former Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, who lobbied for drilling in the North Country. Governor Palin faced tremendous opposition my environmentalists and humanitarian organizations, as well as financial analysts who disputed the positive impact on the economy. The main arguments were the concern for environmental impact - both locally in Alaska and globally - and cost. The Royal Dutch Shell oil company has invested billions of dollars in lobbying for drilling rights, with the sole purpose of dominating the market. Although there are thousands of jobs generated by the oil companies willing to invest in drilling in such harsh conditions, safety, environmental impact on the wildlife, and the impact on local inhabitants is a continuing concern. “The stakes are huge--for Shell, for the environment, for the oil industry, and for the oil-addicted U.S. economy. The fact is, oil demand is soaring. Worldwide oil consumption is now running at 89 million barrels a day, according to the International Energy Agency. Not only is that up 6% from the lows of the recession--a big increase given tight supplies--but it's also above the pre-recession peak of 87 million barrels notched in 2008.” (Birger, 2012) There is also major concern about oil spills, especially since the 2010 BP Deepwater...

...To Drill or Not to Drill HUM/111 Many debates are centered on energy. Some people think that we should decrease our dependency on oil and invest in alternative energy, other people believe that we do not need a new power source; we should be using our own oil and not that of foreign countries. I am not on one side or the other necessarily. I think that we should decrease our dependency on foreign oil. I also think that we should look into alternatives to oil. Many people choose one side or the other based on political bias. Many people do not want change, they believe that oil has worked or for so long why change now. Political roles and views play a large part in deciding about energy sources. Republicans and democrats are the two main parties with different views. “Republicans overwhelmingly push for more oil drilling. Democrats back conservation and new energy sources such as wind and solar power” (Republicans, Democrats at odds on energy issues, 2012). Neither side is right or wrong; there is common ground on most issues. People are blinded by the political parties they fall into the trap of stereotypes. Democrats are typically viewed as tree huggers. They do not want the land destroyed to drill for our own oil. Republicans are generally viewed as people who want nothing else but to drill for our own oil, at any cost. People are blinded by political stereotypes and also use the face saving tactic to avoid confrontation or to avoid taking responsibility...

...To Drill or Not to Drill Aloma Chase HUM/111 03/10/2013 Jennifer Beaman To Drill or Not to Drill Alaska drilling in the ANWR refuge is a controversial debate because of the issues which are associated with destroying the wilderness. The ANWR is located in the “North Slope area of Alaska and eight million acres of this selected segment of the landscape is in the National Wilderness Preservation System, which is intended to protect pristine and untouched land areas” (Burley, 2010, p.1). Drilling for oil in the ANWR will destroy the environment; endanger the caribou herds, birds, and other wildlife. However, the opposing viewpoints contend that it would provide jobs, help with our oil supply, and not destroy the land. Examining other alternatives for energy shortages in the United States would prevent the destruction of the ANWR and other protected habitats. Renewable sources of energy like solar energy, and wind power would not affect the environment or cause pollution. The dependence on oil and other fossil fuels needs to be curtailed, so, the Alaska Refuge is not destroyed. Additionally, “each year oil operations on Alaska’s North Slope emit more than 70,000 tons of nitrogen oxides, which contribute to smog and acid rain” (National Resource Defense Council, 2010, p.1). Toxic oil spills kill the plants and vegetation, air pollution caused from drilling and emissions affects the air quality, and hazardous waste contaminates the water supplies. The drilling on...

...To Drill or Not to Drill? April Augello HUM/111 2/24/2013 Bruce Bennett To Drill or Not to Drill? There are many types of energy used for our industrialized nation uses, there are only two types of energy; there is fossil fuels and renewable energy. These would power our factories, automobiles, electrical appliances and many other features of modern life. Fossil fuels like petroleum, natural gas, and coal are not a renewable source of energy. Renewable energy is found in our sun, rain, wind and from heat from in the earth, and many more sources, these renewable energies are replenished constantly. Renewable energies are significant and bring many opportunities for energy efficiency to exist all over the world. This would not only give us significant energy security, but would benefit us economically. There are four areas that renewable energy would replace conventional energies or fuels; it would bring electricity generation along with hot water and space heating and a big one motor fuels. With our global warming and our ozone, we are in desperate need of alternative energies, and they are being developed. Some politicians and environmentalists and others do not think that the world is really getting hotter, global warming is not really happening. That this renewable energy is just too costly, and would we really benefit from this spending to have a renewable energy. That disturbing the soil will release green house gasses into the atmosphere...

...Ancient Chinese Contributions Kenneth Smith Professor Maxine Brown HUM 111-World Cultures I November 29, 2012 The Ancient Chinese culture has contributed in many ways to the way of life today as we know it. Upon completion of this paper, I will have identified eight to ten useful inventions or contributions that are used in the world today. Some of these inventions include the compass, gunpowder, row planting, deep drilling, and toilet paper and so on. Within those eight to ten inventions, I will choose four that I believe are the most innovative. Row Planting (Feudal period – 6th Cent BC) The Chinese started planting crops in rows sometime in the 6th century BC. This allows the crops to grow stronger and faster. It facilitates more planting, weeding, harvesting and watering. There is also documentation that they realize that as wind travels over the rows of plants there is less damage. This obvious development was not instituted in the western world for another 2200 years. (Steven H 2009) Compass (Feudal period – 4th Cent BC) The Chinese developed a lodestone compass to indicate direction sometime in the 4th century BC. These compasses were south pointing and primarily used on land as divination tools and direct finders. Written in the 4th century BC, in the Book of the Devil Valley Master it is written: “lodestone makes iron come or attracts it”. The spoons were made of lodestone, while the plates were of bronze. Thermo-remanence needles were being produced for...

...To Drill or Not to Drill Heather Husby HUM/111 December 8, 2010 Kelly Hoban Axia College of University of Phoenix I agree with the development of alternative sources of energy such as solar power and clean coal. Alternative energy source is defined as any energy source that will replace oil and coal. These sources include solar power, windmills, natural gas, and nuclear energy. These alternatives alone will not help save our planet. However, the potential behind these alternatives is exciting and hopeful. If there is a chance to save our planted from more damage, then the government needs to act now. The United States offshore drilling debate is still ongoing, and the argument is that the United States benefits because it becomes less dependent on imported oil. There is also the argument that offshore drilling would affect military training and weapon testing. However, my argument is that offshore drilling poses a much greater threat to all civilization. When waste is spilled into the ocean it spreads throughout the water harming marine life and their habitat. It can affect their hearing, changes in their behavior and can even cause physical injuring or death. Much of the marine life is threatened by extinction. The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has threatens our planet with environmental damage. Oil spills like this fill the air with toxins that raise concern for many health problems. When oil is recovered from the ocean floor chemicals...

...To Drill Or Not To Drill Hum/111 02/13/2011 Natalie D. Harris I think that when it comes to drilling for oil in foreign countries or spending money to create new technology to make our own oil we should make the new technology and have our own oil. Three reasons why I am on this side is because you have to spend money to make money or save money, there will not be any more wars over oil and we will gain more independence. Those three reasons all tie into each other in some way because we will save money by not going to war with other countries over oil and we will gain independence from them because we will not be looking to them for oil. My first reason behind my position is because you have to spend money to make money and that is with anything because if we make our own oil with new technology then we will not have to pay as many people to work for the oil and gas prices will be cheaper. It is a win-win situation if we make the new technology. It may be a little costly at first but eventually everything will be cheaper because of the new technology. At the same time we will be making money because other countries may have to come to us for oil and we will be making more money that we used to give to other countries. Overall money will be made and saved after a little bit is spent in the beginning. My second reason behind my position is that there will not be anymore wars over oil and this is true because we fight a lot of wars over oil and if we have our own oil...

...Go Green Go Green 2012 Jeremy Nicholl HUM 111 3/18/2012 2012 Jeremy Nicholl HUM 111 3/18/2012 Go Green I believe Green technology is very important as we proceed in the clean-up process of our planet and as we explore alternatives for fossil fuels. Drilling for oil within our country may seem easier and less expensive, however it is a short term solution; we must not rely or assume that fossil fuels are an unlimited resource. We must consider alternatives for fuel and energy while recognizing the effects of pollution on the ozone layer. As we explore different types of renewable energy resources, we must be sure that they are safe on the environment and safe to use in homes or automobiles. Another aspect to consider is the availability of the resource. We do not want to waste time exploring resources which are not going to be readily available or resources that will diminish. The need for fossil fuels in the near future is still a necessity until a transformation can be made to an alternative source. There will always be a demand for fossil fuels, the goal is to reduce to use of fossil fuels as the burning of these fuels emits pollution into our atmosphere. The advantages of fossil fuels are that they are already readily available and distributed worldwide, which is very convenient. You can get gasoline and oil at any gas station and even some grocery stores, across the entire United States. Another advantage...

...Energy in America Hum/111 August 12, 2012 Frank Nolan Energy in America I understand that cost and budgeting is a hot subject in the united states of American with the economy being so bad right now. But I do not think that there is one firm solution the energy needs on the United States. In my opinion I think we should do a combination of both, looking for oil on our homeland has more benefits the negatives. If we where able to find oil on our home land that would lower the price of oil and help build jobs and create a much less need to import oil from other country’s. If we spend money looking for oil in those areas and there is none it can be a huge waste of taxpayers money. Being faced with high risk and reward is always a struggle and the outcome can fall either way. While looking for oil in uninhibited places we should begin to explore other options for energy at the same time from wind, water and solar sources. The United States is depended on energy so reducing the amount used can be a uphill battle I believe we have the technology to create more efficient ways to use or present energy. Going one single route is not the solution to the energy situation in America this is why I think it is always up for debate and this is what makes it difficult to come up with a solution for the actual problem. I think if we take our time and per sue those options bit by bit , over time the true answer will come to surface. (chu, jan ) states that President Obama has been...

(3) Explain why you believe these four inventions or contributions are the most useful inventions or contributions from the ancient Chinese. (4) Identify one invention or contribution that you cannot live without and explain why. The Ancient Chinese Contributions (1) Gunpowder One of the inventions created by Ancient China gunpowder as early first century and was used at that time to make medicine for perpetual rejuvenation. Black gunpowder was not invented till the end of the ninth century and was first used to make fireworks, and later the lighting of fireworks became a Chinese tradition to celebrate festivals. The gunpowder was used in weapons at the end of the 10th Century, when firearms such as exploding arrows heads, flintlock rifles and cannon became available on a large scale. During the 18th century when Western powers invaded China, the Chinese troops were still using flintlock rifles and cannons. At the end of the 14th century a Chinese named Wan Hu fitted a chair with 47 prototype self-made rockets and held a large kite in his hands. His plan was to fly into space and then float back down to the Earth using the kite. The rockets ended up exploding and killing Wan Hu but in his honor In the 1970s, the International Astronomical Union named a lunar crater after...
