Jack Post Abstract Although Douglas Sirk’ All That Heaven Allows (1954) and Todd Haynes’ Far from Heaven (2002) are both characterized as melodramas, they address their spectators differently. The divergent (emotional) reactions towards both films are the effect of different rhetorical strategies: the first can be seen a typical example of baroque discourse and the latter as a specimen of mannerist discourse. The reference to the terms melodrama, mannerism and baroque does not imply that these films are just formal repetitions of historical periods or that they thematically and structurally refer to historical styles, but that they are characterized by opposing discursive strategies which came to the foreground in a specific historical time and constellation. Because these discursive strategies return in other historical periods and socialpolitical circumstances in different guises and with different aims, they can be compared to what Aby Warburg calls Pathosformeln (pathos formula). The expressive forms, gestures and discursive modes of melodrama, baroque and mannerism can thus be understood as transhistorical (gestural) languages of pathos that recur in history. Sources for this paper were found through peer-reviewed academic papers and articles, websites for organizations that advocate for victims of sexual assault and rape, and legislative bills from the state of Idaho. ...Warren Florida State University Donald Tomaskovic-Devey University Massachusetts, Amherst Research Summary Scholarly research has documented repeatedly that minority citizens are disproportionately stopped, searched, and arrested relative to their baseline populations. In recent years, policymakers have brought increased attention to this issue as law-enforcement agencies across the United States have faced allegations of racial profiling. In the 1990s, the politics generated by accounts of racially biased policing placed heightened pressure on law-enforcement agencies. However, to date, few studies have explored whether the increased social and political scrutiny placed on police organizations influenced or changed their general pattern of enforcement among black and white citizens. Using data in the search and citation file from the North Carolina Highway Traffic Study, this research specifically examined whether the politics generated by the media coverage of racial profiling and racial profiling legislation in North Carolina influenced the search practices of officers of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol’s drug interdiction team. The findings suggest that media accounts and the passage of new legislation were particularly powerful influences, which thereby reduced racial disparity in searches. The epinephrine will not be prescribed for any particular student and will be readily available for any student having anaphylaxis. The bill will also allow school staff to administer epinephrine without any liability. Moreover, any school that adopts this legislation will be given preferences when applying for asthma related government grants from health and human resources department (TheHill.com, 2012). Just recently, a first grader, Amarria Johnson of Virginia State died after experiencing an episode of anaphylaxis from eating peanut. Her death could have been prevented, but the school had no epinephrine on hand to save her life(TheHill.com,2012).According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (2011),the delay in using epinephrine is closely associated with death from anaphylaxis,expecially anaphylaxis resulting from peanuts allergy (niaid,2011).Symptoms of anaphylaxis include itching ,swelling of lips and tongue, tightness of throat, skin hives, vomiting, diarrhea ,cramps, shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, weak pulse, dizziness and passing out (niaid,2011).
