...inherent in his role in the film. "SOME LIKE IT HOT" The all-time satirical, comedy farce favorite and outrageous “Some like It Hot” produced in the year 1959, is one of the most comical films ever made. This film has had the combination of several elements, which include a part of 1920-1930s gangster films and romances. The director had one major objective, which was to include deceptive and entangled identities, cross-dressing, and reversed sex roles. It was for these reasons why the film gained so much popularity during the time and this lead to the director receiving six Academy Award nominations. Among the major themes presented in the film, the paper will discuss some of the ways the director plays with gender issues in creating such a resilient comedy. According to Martínez, María Jesús (p. 146), aspects of cultural negotiations among others has affected for long the sexual definitions and gender representation generally. Therefore, the representation of a woman has long provided a powerful and undecided patriarchal character, heavily determined as the expression of the male awareness. Similarly, the film in question, ‘Some Like It Hot’, is viewed as a patriarchal product in which it is acting as a vessel where some of the taken-for-granted behaviors are displayed such as heterosexual love. It is also acting as a generator of alternative meanings that challenge this patriarchal structure of gender relation and gender differences. In addition, the film articulates...

...The movie Film study essay Grade 12 The films reasonable man and tsotsi both deal with how one faces and deals with his past, therefore the theme “emotional journey” is revealed clearly in characters. In comparing and contrasting the characters of Sean and David (Tsotsi). Write an essay of about 700-800 words to discuss which movie best portrays that. Refer to the uniquely filmic issues such as composition, lighting, sound camera shots and angles to smoothly weave them into your reasoning. 2014 Mulondo Nethengwe English assignment 7/21/2014 How strange, a movie where a bad man becomes better, instead of the other way around “Tsotsi” a film of deep emotional power, considers a young killer whose cold eyes show no emotion, who kills unthinkingly, and who is transformed by the helplessness of a baby. He didn't mean to kidnap the baby, but now that he has it, it looks at him with trust and need, and he is powerless before eyes more demanding than his own. On the other hand, the movie Reasonable man tells a story of a city lawyer who comes across the case of the herd boy from remote, rural Zululand, who killed a one year old baby in the mistaken belief that he was killing an evil spirit known as the tokoloshe. Secrets of Sean from the past were revealed as he tried to help the herd boy, siphon. In such parameters of the two movies the one that best portrays “emotional journey” is that that brought the images to life. The movie that best portrays the theme at hand, which is...

...Film Viewer Opinion Paper Francis F Perkins HUM/150 May seventh 2012 Carole Ricotta Film Viewer Opinion Paper I decide to watch a film from the film trailer’s that are advertised on television. I enjoy science fiction movies and if a science fiction movie is coming I will try to watch it’ I enjoy movies with a large amount of action and violence in it. I will watch other movies and am surprised that I enjoyed them. A so called “chick flick” is not really my choice but have enjoyed them when I am dragged to see one. Some of the favorite films are “Close Encounters of the third Kind” and “ET.” I will watch the movies that are advertised on television before I will go see the film. If the trailer for the film has a much action in it I will go watch the film. I have watched films that looked exciting on television, and they turned out to be duds. I go to the movies I like to be entertained and not given something to think about. What make a film enjoyable to me are many parts of the film. If the acting is good and the actors make he or she believe that the action is really going on, and it makes the film enjoyable. Special effects in a film can make or break a film if I believe what is happening. Some films are made too dark, and it makes it hard to see what is going on in the film so lighting is important in a film. Of course a good plot line in a film is important with many twists and turns in a film makes it interesting. A good murder mystery or horror movie with many...

...A Study of Online Film Reviews’ Reliability and Watching Film’s Intention INTRODUCTION Today myriads of people search for information online rather than non-internet channels. According to the statistics reported by clickz.com (2005), the quantity of netizens has reached nine million in Taiwan. They make use of the internet to gain knowledge and search for information. Moreover, they also take advantage of the internet to browse the film reviews on film reviews’ websites. Among those netizens, a part of group is made up by college students. However, the deficient reliability of websites was found by college students. What exactly college students would have that thought in mind was the research purpose. As the computer technology grows rapidly, people are bombarded by a large reservoir of information which offers the marketers a challenge because “… as consumers adopt new technologies, their behaviors change” (Zinkhan, 1998). When college students want to see a movie, they check the online review website before they really go to that movie. Yet some of online comments are not matched to the reality. Because the comments on the film review website said the movie was good, the college students didn’t like the “good movie” which was commented on the website. Because of this situation, some people trust the comments on online film review but some do not. Within the extensive literature on the influence of online film review, little research has been done on...

Introduction Teenage pregnancy remains a world-wide public health concern with rates in the US and UK among the highest in highincome countries (Finer & Zolna, 2011; Lawlor & Shaw, 2004). While teenage pregnancies have been gradually decreasing over the past decade, recent figures suggest pregnancy rates as high as 54.6 per 1000 women under 20 in the UK (ONS, 2012) and 67.8 per 1000 in the US (Kost & Henshaw, 2012). As many as half of these pregnancies end in legal abortion, reflecting the potentially unintended or unwanted nature of these conceptions (Kost & Henshaw, 2012; ONS, 2012). Although the life course for teenaged parents is not universally negative (Bonell, 2004; Duncan, Jarrett, & Harvey, 2010), the social disadvantage and exclusion that are linked to unintended teenage pregnancy are considered problematic (Harden, Brunton, Fletcher, & Oakley, 2009). Unintended adolescent pregnancy can lead to considerable adverse health problems for teenagers...

...BBFC – This Is England. This is England is a British film written and directed by Shane Meadows in 2006. The film revolves around the life of a young boy facing social challenges, who later finds company with a young group of skinheads in 1983. The film highlights the origin of their subculture, which can be traced back to the 1960’s. The film also highlights the social issues that were dominant within the society, as well as the division between skinheads in the society because of their nationalist views. Becuase this film was produced in UK, the film had to undergo certain levels of scrutiny under media regulation bodies. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Media and Communication, media regulation is the “control and supervision of organizations exercised by external authorities through the application of rules.”(ODMC 2011). The setup of regulation bodies in a society stimulates domestic production of films, and guarantees public interest when watching films within the region affected. The British Board of Film Classification, commonly known by its abbreviation, ‘BBFC’, is a non-profit regulatory organisation in the United Kingdom, setup in 1912 as an independent body to bring a degree of uniformity to the classification of film nationally, and test their suitability for viewing in the home. The BBFC is the regulatory body for films produced and distributed in the UK. They examine “issues such as discrimination, drugs, horror, imitable behaviour, language, nudity, sex, sexual...

...Films more often than enough can demonstrate signs of unreliability and the majority of the time it is the narrator who is the cause of the film's dubiousness. The dictionary definition of an unreliable narrator asserts that they demonstrate qualities and tendencies that denote an absence of reliability or perception of the narrative. "Whether due to age, mental disability or personal involvement, an unreliable narrator provides the reader with either incomplete or inaccurate information as a result of these conditions." [1] As Wayne Booth once stated: "I have called a narrator reliable when he speaks for or acts in accordance with the norms of the work, (which is to say, the implied authors norms) unreliable when he does not" [2] . We are consumers of narratives which has given us the ability to identify unreliable stories. However as "theoreticians, we are less well able to say what constitutes unreliability and how it is detected". [3] Shutter Island is a film adapted, from a novel, by Martin Scorsese; the film is within the film noir genre, with an unreliable narrator that, as result, plays with your mind and makes the film appear to be very ambiguous. Shutter Island is clearly shown through the perspective of a fallacious narrator. A narrator's job is to reveal what is real in the narrative and, comparable to tellers in reality, the narrator may have it incorrect or would rather disclose what they deem to be true. "On this model we perceive narrative unreliability...

...Literacy for Work and Community life Text Analysis: Romeo and Juliet Film Response In 1996, Australian director Baz Luhrmann decided to adapt Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet into his own style as a modern film. Romeo and Juliet is a story of how they met and fell in love with each other, but both tragically ended their lives due to their feuding families, the Montagues and the Capulets. In the prologue, it starts off with a newsreader on a TV, acting as Shakespeare’s narrator. The prologue and opening scene were significant because it showed the audience, right from the beginning, how deep the hatred was between the Montagues and Capulets, which focuses on the themes family feud and hubris. Luhrmann uses a wide shot of skyscrapers, one belonging to the Montagues on one side of the street and the Capulets on the other side. This gives the audience a hint of what might be rivalry, hatred, and battle, which highlights the theme family feud. The opening scene involves boys from the Montagues and Capulets at a petrol station. Baz Luhrmann uses costumes to portray the opposing families, the Montagues and Capulets. For example, the Montagues were wearing beach clothing which gives proposes to the audience that they are carefree. On the other hand Tybalt, who represented the Capulets, wore a black suit suggesting that he was much more intelligent. Tybalt was introduced with an extreme close up and his face was filled with disgust and hatred which was directed towards the Montagues...

...Policies to increase competitiveness of Japanese film Industry globally Cooperation, Outbound FDI and Technology Transfer: In the Global Logic of Strategic Alliance, Kenichi Ohmae suggests that due to the dispersion of technology, firms can increase their technological knowledge by cooperation with other partners. Indeed the Japanese did this early on, working with the Americans and Europeans to gain experience in new filming techniques and technology. For example, the Franco-Japanese film Typhoon over Nagasaki, Madame Butterfly (Italian-Japanese), and Geisha Girl (American-Japanese). Japanese firms have also been active in outbound FDI. For example, in 1989 Sony purchased Columbia pictures for 4.8 billion USD, including TriStar Films and the Loews Cinema Chain. Later, to expand its film arm, Sony also acquired MGM. In fact, for such outbound FDI by Japanese firms, they are able to benefit from a stronger yen as they...

...Kodak is a multinational American corporation which has become a household name most known for its film products. The company has come face to face with many changes due to the digital revolution which has created a rapid changing photography industry. George Eastman began Kodak in 1880 and introduced the first Kodak camera in 1888 coining the slogan “you press the button, we do the rest.” Eastman held a high standard for the company when it came to competition however with many managerial and product line changes, Kodak has slowly fallen behind in the industry. The company has experienced many shortcomings with the most recent trend of digital photography. According to Exhibit 7, from 1998-2002 Kodak was 2nd to Sony in the U.S. for the percent of units sold. The company is now considering layoffs as market share, film sales, and company revenues are down. Problems: § The company is faced with multiple managerial problems. First, the company lacked fresh blood in its management team. All of its CEO’s primarily came from the manufacturing jobs within its own company. This hurt the company overall and put a damper on keeping up with technological changes and competition as “Kodak avoided anything risky or innovative.” Second, when the company finally did add new blood to its management team things still didn’t look up. CEO Kay Whitmore was added in 1990 and changed the focus to “film based technology” such as the Photo CD. In an attempt to integrate this new technology with the...
