Tom Udall is a senior senator from New Mexico. Udall received his undergraduate degree from Prescott College, Bachelor of Law degree from Cambridge University, and JD degree from the University of New Mexico Law School. In 1990, early in his political career, Udall served as New Mexico’s Attorney General. As Attorney General, he worked to battle DWI, domestic violence, and pushed for harsher laws against offenders. In 1998, Udall was elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving the 3rd Congressional District of New Mexico. These bills include the Albuquerque Indian School Land Transfer Act, New Mexico Navajo Water Settlement Technical Corrections Act, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Federal Land Conveyance Act of 2013, Sandia Pueblo Settlement Technical Amendment Act, and A bill to authorize leases of up to 99 years for lands held in trust for Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. Currently, Tom Udall serves on the Appropriations, Foreign Relations, Commerce, Indian Affairs, and Rules and Administration committees in the Senate. As a senator of a border state, Tom Udall recognizes the issue of border security. He is the Head of the New Mexico Security Border Task Force, and feels that Border Patrol often lacks adequate supplies. Therefore Udall is working to properly equip these workers to productively monitor our nation’s borders. Regarding immigration policy, Tom Udall feels that our nation should be more welcoming to immigrants searching for a better life in the United States.
Tom Udall is a member of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and is involved in improving relations with the rest of the world. He thinks that deploying large forces of troops in Afghanistan is unsustainable, but we can motivate Afghans to take control of our country through an accelerated transition or our troops. In 2009, Udall voted against the Iraq War. He also strongly believes that the United States should continue to connect with countries and supporters of democracy in the Middle East. He feels that this will give countries the support needed to transition to a peaceful, democratic society.
