The protagonist of a play is always a character which intrigues the audience, they are always a hero in some form. The traditional or classical heroes did not represent the majority but only a handful of those who belonged to a noble class, such as the kings, soldiers or noblemen of pre-Shakespearean works. Therefore the audiences might have had a difficult time forming an association with them. Those plays did portray important themes but they lacked an anti-hero,’ a character who embodied all the flaws of an ordinary man’ in this regard the classical plays were not the ‘plays for the common man’ rather they were the ‘plays for the elite’ (Barranger, 2013). However William Shakespeare began a change with his tragic heroes which in time lead …show more content…
Louis during the Great Depression. Tom dreams of becoming a writer but in the meantime he supports the family by working in a warehouse. Uneducated and unskilled, Amanda depends wholly on Tom. She fears he will abandon her and Laura, just as her husband had before. Tom mentions co-worker Jim O’Connor to Amanda who insists he invite Jim to dinner. She thinks of Jim as Laura’s “gentleman caller” and saviour, a safe future for Laura as Jim’s wife. When Jim arrives for dinner, the nervous, quiet Laura was anxious, as she had recognized the name as a boy she admired in high school. Jim remembers Laura and as they reminisce, he finds himself attracted to Laura. Laura is devastated when Jim explains that he is engaged. Hamlet’s hermatia, or ‘fatal’ flaw, makes him an incredible tragic figure in the works of Shakespeare. He is a pensive character and in a typical situation, this would not be a problem. However, his life as royalty makes him prone to undesirable and taxing circumstances which leads to his death(Liang, 2015). Hamlet as a tragic hero portrayed someone that was imperfect which allowed for an element of relatability however the characters royal status caused a distance in relatability between character and intended

Menagerie

...Rhetorical Analysis of Glass Menagerie The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams is a play about the narrator turned hero named Tom. Tom works at a shoe warehouse and writes poetry in his free time; while also taking on the responsibilities of his family after his father left. The mother Amanda lives in her memories of gentleman callers and parties, while avoiding the reality of her crippled daughter Laura who is in a dream world of little glass animals. Her mother seeing no future for her, she gets Tom to find a bachelor for Laura and invite him to dinner. Instead Tom brings home Jim his employee and also unknown secret idol of Laura’s from high school. Jim gets her from out this dream world, but when he breaks off bad news of him being engaged Laura withdraws for good. Angering the mother and eventually leading to Tom leaving as his father did. In this play Tennessee Williams uses a multitude of symbols. From these symbols, there comes deeper understanding of the relationship between the play’s four characters. The most obvious symbol in this play is Laura’s glass menagerie, representing the world she lives in. Being that this glass menagerie is a representation of Laura’s world. I understood that when Jim bumped into the table and knocked the menagerie over causing it shatter; Laura picking up the pieces then handing it to Jim, showed then that she wanted Jim to be her world/her happiness. Another recurring symbol is that of the fire escape. Each symbol is a concrete...

Commitment to Family or Freedom to Self

...Burning, and Ulysses it got me thinking about some of the ways in which I feel about my own family situation. I know I could never leave them, but I do know so many people who have set off away from their families. I sometimes desperately envy those with that freedom. In all three works, there is a balance to be found towards responsibility and commitment to family, and freedom and choice to self. For the purpose of this essay I will compare the roles of Tom from The Glass Menagerie, Sarty in Barn Burning, and Ulysses in the poem Ulysses. Although they each served a different role in the family as a brother, father, and a son, they in the end all made a decision to leave their families in each literary piece. | In the play The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, the main character Tom Wingfield struggles with choosing between his own personal dreams versus accepting the reality of his Family’s situation. Tom and his family live in an alley apartment and survive mainly on Tom’s salary from a shoe factory. Tom often seems uninterested in self improvement tasks such as attending night school...

...FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing offlimits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and...
