Through telling the story from the parents’ perspective, Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” seeks to criticize both extremes of total equality and total inequality as detrimental to the general public. At the start of the story, all people have become “equal [in] every which way” (Vonnegut). However, all this progress has not been as wonderful as people would think. Instead of recognizing each individual’s unique talents, everyone has been set to perform to the lowest common denominator.
