...Past Paper Questions - Section B (i) These questions are always based on one of the Language Anthology Section A extracts that we have studied in class. You will be asked to write an analytical essay about these extracts in exactly the same way that you would usually write an essay about your literature texts. As such it is really important that you remember to write PEE paragraphs and include quotations from the text to support your points. This question is testing your ability to read and so spelling and grammar are not awarded but they are still important in creating a good impression. This question is worth 10 marks and so you should spend about 20 minutes on it. May 2010 – Shopping for Romanian Babies In the passage, the writer is shocked by some of her experiences. What do we learn about the people she meets, and the places she visits, from her account? You should refer closely to this passage to support your answer. You may include brief quotations. November 2009 – Touching the Void Joe and Simon describe the same event, but react to and write about it in very different ways. How does each writer present his particular point of view? You may include brief quotations from the passage to support your answer. May 2009 – Chinese Cinderella Adeline Yen Mah experiences both fear and joy during the course of this passage. ...Heal. "The Last Leaf" by O. Henry is an interesting short story about a sick girl named Johnsy, who is deeply affected by a bare vine tree. Johnsy has decided she will not get well and has reconciled herself with the fact that she is going to die when the last leaf falls off the ivy bush outside her bedroom window. Johnsy's hopelessness and willingness to accept the worst without a fight is a major statement about the emotional state of the character. In his wonderful short-story “the last leaf”, using sacrificial themes, fear of pneumonia and a twist on the fatalistic tone, O.Henry depicted a really meaningful goal: Life must have hope. In brief, I love this story very much. Its plot and its characters are simply, but it is a very touching story that makes I recognize many things in life. Life is meaningful only for people who have hope and love. The hope helps us live better and heals our body and spirit. Hope is the foundation of our personal futures; each of us would probably suicide without hope. It is the virtue that helps us overcome obstacles. Without hope, we seem to give up easily like Johnsy in the story. Without hope, there is nothing. Another important thing in life is love. O. Henry, through the story, advices us should love ourselves and other people. The love between three persons, Johnsy, Sue and old Behrman makes a moving story. Johnsy had sometimes forgotten loving herself and cause the worry for Sue, but the biggest love is the love of the old Behrman for...

...”At Night” by Andre Dubus. Essay The only thing in life, you can be completely sure about, is that you have to die some day. It is certain knowledge, and it applies to all living creatures on Earth. Still it’s hard to understand and accept, especially when it is your close friends and family it concerns. “At Night” is a short story there describes time-consciousness connected to death. How you are trying to accept and realize the fact that we all have to die, because it is the most natural thing in the world. And when you are conscious about you and your love ones morality, you will try to pre-pare yourself by planning what you will do in the situation, where death will take over, and you stand powerless behind. The story has minimalist traits, which means, that there are a lot of empty places you have to fill in as a reader. The reader is an active part in the interpretation, and can be understood as the mean-ingful connecting link between the text and reader. It demands therefore an in-depth analysis if you want to understand the deeper significance. The story is written in past tense and it has a third person narrator, which gives a distance effect. The main characters doesn’t have names, they are just called “she” and “he”, and that also creates a sort of distance between the reader and the characters, where the distance can express the fact that the wife is trying to plan the futures unpredictability. The wife ”always knew she would be a widow” (quotation)...

...Dream Essay ENG 101 Make It Stop I know that I am awake! I just know I am. I felt myself sitting up in the bed, eyes wide open and my heart pounding harder than I have ever felt it before. But just as sure as I am that I am wake the images just keep coming, playing like a horror movie, only in slow motion. No matter what I try to do the movie kept playing. “Please stop, make it stop “I Remember crying. The horrific images continue to flash before me. I am reliving the entire attack. It was so real and vivid, almost as if I can not only see the assault but I can feel the punches as they are being rained down on my body. Why can I not wake up? I know what is coming next so why can’t make this stop? I was forced to watch everything that had been done to me. As if I was an outsider looking in, I watches as the attack started upstairs. I watched as what seemed to be 20 maybe 30 punches land on my head and body yet I know the worse was still yet to come. He continues to hit me over and over again. The scenes continue to play out before my eyes. We are downstairs now, hopefully now I won’t wake up the boys with my cries. The attack continues I can feel the blows all over my body. I try running away but I cannot escape him or the terrifying fear of what is coming next. The images continue until I feel his hand wrapped around my throat. I know it will all be over soon. I begin to pray just as I did that night “Lord please...

...The good aspects of relying on precedent to decide current cases is that people will know what can happen if it is same type of case. It will lead to same outcome to all, with no exceptions. The bad aspects of relying on precedent are that if there is a wrong precedent it will keep for a very long time, making it very rigid and with no exceptions. In the case I chose as a landmark in previous assignment: Gideon vs. Wainwright. Gideon was an indigent and he was not given a counsel appointed by the court when he asked for it, because his case was a noncapital case. He was sued for robbery and as a result he got in jail. He took a long time until the Supreme Court saw the case, during his stay in jail. Finally the 9 judges allowed him to have a lawyer who defended him and had a fairer trial (equal conditions) where a lawyer defended him and set up a landmark and precedent for the future. During the new trial it was shown that he was not who commit the robbery. ADR means “Alternative Dispute Resolution”. These are: negotiation, arbitration, mediation, mini-trial, fact-finding and judicial referee. Usually litigation is more expensive because of the legal fees and expenses and also it can take years for the court system to resolve disputes. The elements of a negligence claim are: -Duty of care -Breach of duty -Injury to plaintiff -Actual cause -Proximate cause The difference between intentional tort and negligence is the intention. In negligence claims...

...Title: The Problem of Faith in 'Young Goodman Brown' Author(s): Leo B. Levy Publication Details: JEGP: Journal of English and Germanic Philology 74.3 (July 1975): p375-387. Source: Nineteenth-Century Literature Criticism. Ed. Juliet Byington. Vol. 95. Detroit: Gale Group, 2001. p375-387. From Literature Resource Center. Document Type: Critical essay Full Text: COPYRIGHT 2001 Gale Group, COPYRIGHT 2007 Gale, Cengage Learning [In the following essay, Levy examines Faith as a character, an allegorical figure, and a symbol.] Few of Hawthorne's tales have elicited a wider range of interpretations than “Young Goodman Brown.” The critics have been victimized by the notorious ambiguity of a tale composed of a mixture of allegory and the psychological analysis of consciousness. Many of them find the key to its meaning in a neurotic predisposition to evil; one goes so far as to compare Goodman Brown to Henry James's governess in The Turn of the Screw [Darrel Abel, in “Black Glove and Pink Ribbon: Hawthorne's Metonymic Symbols,” in NEQ 42, 1969]. The psychological aspect is undeniably important, since we cannot be certain whether “Young Goodman Brown” is a dream-allegory that takes place in the mind and imagination of the protagonist, an allegory with fixed referents in the external world, or a combination of these that eludes our ordinary understanding of the genre itself. The story is all three: a dream vision, a conventional allegory, and finally an inquiry into the problem of faith...

...collaborate with cable network HBO‘s writer-producers David Banioff and Daniel B. Weiss on the adaptation of his epic novel series to TV under the name Game of Thrones (GoT) [14]. Its narrative features the medieval fantasy world of Westeros, in which five noble families struggle to seize the all governing Iron Throne, and, with a complete broadcast of three seasons, the result has led TV critics to hail the show as one of the pinnacles of quality television narrative [21]. The show has also obtained an exceptionally broad and international fandom. The series has won numerous awards and nominations. It is the most recent big-budget media franchise to have contributed to the popularity of epic fantasy genre in mainstream TV. This essay will analyze the transmedia storytelling strategies applied to promote the TV series Game of Thrones. Transmedia storytelling is understood as a story told throughout numerous media platforms, with special content pointing back to the main narrative, working as a potential new audience entry-point. ―In which way transmedia storytelling is involved in Game of Thrones commercial success?‖ is the research question proposed. To answer this question, I intend to refer to the concepts of paratexts in relation to core text, as it is essential for transmedia storytelling. It is worth mentioning here...

According to ancient Vedic texts (and later through Tantric and Taoist traditions), the energetic, or subtle, body is the foundation of the food, or coarse body, and the bridge between the physical and causal realms. Therefore, the structure of the subtle energetic body provides an intended means for human spiritual development, or evolution (which enables humanity to fulfill its purpose as a conduit between heaven and earth, hence transforming into an entity more subtle, and original). The text’s primary purpose is to present oriental bio-energetic theory, and second, to bridge...

...this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are...
