REPORT FIELD TRIP TO MHOW ARMY BASE

On 15 February, our day started early in the morning at around 7 AM as the students of Cdr Muthu had to visit the army base at Mhow,a place just outside of Indore. We were thrilled by this opportunity of visiting a new place, gaining new knowledge and a different experience. The first site we were to visit was the Army Aero Nodal Centre. I was particularly looking forward to the whole trip as I had never been to any military centre before, neither had I experienced the totally different and majestic aura of such places. On reaching the Aero Nodal Centre, we were all greeted by Col. R.K. Sharma who briefed us shortly about the centre, divided the batch into 2 groups and gave us a short introduction of what we were about to see. We were informed about the 2 types of aircrafts they had –Free hang Gliders and Microlites.
Our group first went to see the Free hang Glider. A free hang glider is an unpowered aircraft consisting of a large cloth wing stretched over a light framework from which the pilot hangs in a harness, using a horizontal bar to control the flight and propellers to continue. We were told that earlier, only these were available but as technology advanced, microlites were introduced. The colonel who explained us the mechanisms of flight was able to communicate every detail of the glider with us, making us more and more eager to try out the sport ourselves! We were shown the Microlite which is a powered hang glider of . We were informed about the details of it, such as: the capacity of the glider is 70 litres; its able to carry the weight of up to 450 KGs to the height of 10,000 ft. Next, we were shown the fixed wing Macrolite which had a cockpit so that a person along with an instructor can take a flight. We were shown various controls of the Microlite such as the rudder, the ailerons, etc.
Before moving on from the Aero Nodal Centre, the Colonel was delighted to show us a demonstration of the flights of both the gliders and was open to any doubts we might have.
Our second stop was The Infantry School where we were welcomed and later briefed by Col. Suresh Sharma. In his inspiring speech, he told us that infantry is the oldest and the largest arm of the Indian Army. He told us that the first Infantry School was founded in 1865 but later established in 1948 in Mhow. He also described how regiments are centred and other such details. His talk about the role of the Infantry in imparting tactical, technical and leadership knowledge was truly inspiring and so was his vision for the school in the near future. He shared with us that the vision of the individuals in the military is to emerge as centre of excellence while being dynamic and effective. We, as management students, would particularly know how important being dynamic, effective and efficient is and hence we were able to positively relate to the vision of the arm. Next we were taken to see various types of stimulators that are used in training of the trainees for warfare and battalion. It was almost like a video-game that we as kids used to play but in this case, the difference was between life and death, loss and victory. It was pretty interesting to see different types of stimulators and the methods by which trainees were trained. The next section in the infantry was the IED section where we were warned about IEDs, i.e., Improvised Explosive Devices which are used in unconventional warfare. We were shown different types of IEDs (also known as “roadside bombs”) and also their detection, such as the Ashi Pre-identifier.
Our next stop was the Army War School which was a truly magnificent building with its distinguished charm and aura. We were addressed by Brigadier K.N. Airy whom I found to be a pretty modest person on personal interaction. We were briefed about the whole structure of military hierarchy and their mission, duties and vision. After the briefing, we went ahead to see the Library, the RSC and to enjoy the delicious refreshments arranged for us. We all assembled again to learn about “terrain evaluation” which is done during the planning stage. It was pretty interesting to see the Google maps demonstration shown to us there. With the last session in the War School, we bid goodbye to the grand institute.
Our last stop was the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering where we were welcomed very warmly by Col. Deepak Puri. He briefed us about the college and explained the various important events in history and the importance of the field through a movie. His good sense of humour and delightful attitude entertained and rejuvenated all of us, making us learn in process. With this happy and delightful note, we ended our field trip and boarded our busses back to our institute.
In the end, I would like to conclude by saying that it was a truly entertaining as well as inspiring trip which made me learn the practical aspects of what I learnt in class and generated further interest, all of which was done in a fun way!

Women's Role In The American Revolution

...until you look at the women involved in the continental army and all the impact they had made. Over time we think of the great men who fought for this nation's freedom in the American Revolution. However one important aspect of the American revolution that is most often overlooked are the women involved in the war. Society did not easily accept female workers. Even though washington and the men in the army in that time period did not like to admit it, the women were needed. Some officers however saw the women as a distraction to the camps. But if the women would have not be allowed to work in the military camps, the army would have lost a great number of female soldiers. Some of the major roles...

...Michał Duch Vietcong - The Guerrilla Fighters The Vietnam War was extremely specific conflict. The Americans possessed enormous army, huge amounts of money to spare and latest technology inventions. Vietcong, on the other hand fought using underground tactics with an underground army without modern equipment and air support. Here comes up following issue, namely, why Americans had so many difficulties with defeating Vietcong? To begin with, Vietcong fought using specific strategy called “guerilla war” (it is a warfare based on military actions where small mobile forces prepare ambushes and fight using unexpected tactics). Vietnamese used different tricks to surprise and eliminate American troops and vehicles. They ambushed US patrols using booby traps and landmines, civilian towns were often full of skillfully planted bombs. Common practice used by Vietcong soldiers was mingling with peasants to confuse Americans. US soldiers had serious difficulties with identifying who was real enemy. Another commonly used Vietcong tactic was called “hanging onto the belts”. The aim of this method was to stay in short distance with Americans. As a result US soldiers could not call an artillery backup because there was a risk of killing ally units. Vietcong troops were significantly supplied by Russia and China. Both countries provided them with weapons and rockets. In order to transport equipment safely Vietnamese used The Ho Chi Minh...

...the American 20th Century War and peacetime are losing meaning in today’s society. Most of the time, the standing army is active in some way. This is due to the U.S. involvement in foreign affairs. Fort Bragg just outside of Fayetteville, NC is a great example of this. What used to be peacetime is now time to prepare for the next war. This leaves distinction between the two almost impossible for the people in Fayetteville, who generally see war games played out sometimes involving the city. Due to this and the non-violence of the Cold War, civilians find it impossible to find distinctions between war and peace. Lutz explains in her narrative how our society is losing the time between wars once called peacetime. Now a days this time is used to prepare for the next war, as in war games, training and military exercises. These all put a major strain on society, especially ones that become involved with the war games, etc. This was apparent in Exercise Flash Burn. Here Fort Bragg was running a war game to practice for nuclear war. On maps used for the games, neighboring Fayetteville was dubbed “Pineland”. The local newspaper would cover these games generally in the “style of Reader’s Digest, ‘Humor in Uniform’: Soldiers participating in the games had mishaps as they bellied up to snakes in the woods or were bested by pickpockets on their bus trip in. And some featured a sporty rooting for the home boys against the ‘Aggressor Forces’” (page 88). This shows the interaction...

Viet Cong Fighting In Vietnam

...The Viet Cong fighting style was centered around sneakiness. Because the jungle around the trail was so thick, they had the advantage of knowing the land. Because of this they were able to launch attacks Americans were not expecting. They used booby traps as a main method of attacks. In 1964, the first infantry units from the People’s Army of Vietnam successfully navigated the trail and infiltrated into South Vietnam. The trail had a secondary purpose. To get troops, not just supplies into the south (Meissner). “By the end of the year about 1,800 men had infiltrated into South Vietnam by using the trail” (Ho 4). The Viet Cong used guerilla warfare during this war. They used tunnels under the trail to get around undetected, set booby traps and...

World War 2

...beginning of the greatest of global conflicts. In 1931, the Japanese army invaded Manchuria, a northern province of China. In July 1937, the Japanese moved again, this time directly against the Nationalist regime of Chiang Kai-shek. The atrocities that followed shocked the world. Meanwhile, in 1936, German Chancellor Adolf Hitler moved aggressively into the Rhineland, previously a demilitarized zone, and in 1938, he incorporated Czechoslovakia and Austria into the Third Reich. By this time, the Western world was fully alert to the menace of the fanatically ambitious and confident Fuhrer. Then, in the early morning hours of September 1, 1939, Hitler sent his armies into Poland. Two days later, France and Great Britain declared war on Germany. Within a matter of weeks the Soviet Union, which had recently signed a non-aggression treaty with Hitler, attacked Poland from the east. Within a month, Polish resistance collapsed, and Warsaw fell. World War II had begun. In general, the American people did not want to have any part in a European war. They felt protected by great oceans on both sides of the North American continent. And they felt that, in World War I, American boys had fought and bled in France mostly to make fortunes for munitions makers and arms merchants. Moreover, the United States had allowed its armed forces to wither in the 1920s and 1930, so that when World War II broke out in Europe, its army of 190,000 men ranked about eighteenth in the global rankings, about...

Even with the fuel rations and the drastic decrease in automobiles and automobile goods Americans still made due with what they had. They carpooled with their friends and family members to save gas and fuel rations so that they could make more trips to their workplace. Even with this sometimes they couldn't carpool so they had to use public transportation; sadly everyone else had this idea and soldiers moved from army base to army base using public transportation. This crowding of the train and bus stations caused them to be very slow and wait times to be very long, this causing people to be late to their destinations and the cars, when they did finally get on them, were very crammed and uncomfortable...

Battle of Ia Drang

...Battle of Ia Drang Valley The “Battle of Ia Drang Valley” took place 14 November through 18 November 1965. The battle was one of the first major battles of the Vietnam War. The battles location took place in South Vietnam where the Drang River flows into Cambodia. (Historynet) Since the Vietnam War had started, this territory had never been occupied because the enemy, People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN), occupied much of the area. The battle waged on for five days between the United States 1st Cavalry Division and the People’s Army of Vietnam. From a macro level, the United States got involved with the Vietnam War from the fear that communism empires were going to spread throughout South-east Asia. As for the Battle of Ia Drang Valley, American military commanders took the approach that it was solely a search and destroy mission of the enemy. (MilitaryHistory) Each side had slightly different war aims. The United States wanted to fly into a landing zone (LZ) and reconnaissance the area so they could find the People’s Army of Vietnam and destroy enemy elements in South Vietnam. The People’s Army of Vietnam and the Viet Cong wanted to hold onto their territory and stave off the American’s advance into their stronghold. (MilitaryHistory) The operational environment for the Battle of Ia Drang Valley had an overlying impact on how the rest of the Vietnam War was going to be fought. The American’s were going to fly into the Ia Drang Valley with the 1st Cavalry Division and...
