Nasopharyngitis, commonly known as the common cold or Upper respiratory infection (URI), has been the leading cause of illness in the world to date. (Monto, 1995) The Australian population files millions of cases of the common cold every year with two to four colds per year. (Gwaltney, 2002)
The common cold is the reason why there are over 20 million visits to the doctor and is the most common illness reported. (Braun et al., 2000).
Vitamin C was introduced in the 1930’s In relation to treating respiratory infections. Once isolated It became world wide treatment when Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling explained from his placebo-controlled trials that Vitamin C would prevent and cure the common cold in the 1970’s (Carr AB, 2010)
Since then Vitamin C has been widely used as a therapeutic and preventative agent to combat the common cold. Over the past few decades’ studies have shown that when taken daily it may assist in reducing the symptoms, duration and severity of the common cold. (Gwaltney, 2002)
This review will give insight into the truth of Vitamin C and the common cold outlining the validity and truth behind the treatment with investigations of over 20 studies examined.
The common cold
Viruses are the main cause for Nasopharyngitis, commonly known as the common cold or Upper respiratory infection. Treatment usually is in the form of antibiotics or cough and cold medications over the counter. Other medications usually used are inhaled corticosteroids, Echinacea and oral prednisolone. (Audera C, 2009)
Vitamin C
Vitamin C also known as L-ascorbic acid or ascorbate is a water soluble vitamin. Unlike other animals humans can’t produce Vitamin C naturally hence need to obtain it through their diet. The recommended daily amount is 75-90mg/day as per Australian national health research council. (Cowan,D, 2009)
Studies hypothesised that consuming over 100mg/day would decrease frequency, duration, or severity of common colds.
Studies Reviewed
Reviewing over 20 studies that involved over 10,000 people illustrated that doses of at least 200mg per day didn’t have a significant reduction in the severity and length of colds.
However in athletes, studies have shown to reduce the incidence of colds by around 50% if vitamin C tablets were taken daily. (Hemila,2007)
A recent study by Researchers led by Harri Hemilä, MD, PhD, of the Department of Public Health at the University of Helsinki in Finland, conducted trials with vitamin C. (Hemila, 2007)
The study conducted looked at the duration and severity of the cold. After extensive number of trials and over 10,000 people trialed results indicated that Vitamin C didn’t reduce the risk of getting a cold. (Audera, 2010)
Vitamin C taken regularly at 200mg per day showed to reduce the duration of the common cold by 8-14% in children and adults. (Audera, 2010)
This means if a normal cold lasts four to five days, an individual that takes vitamin C would benefit by recovering half a day earlier. Which frankly isn’t a significant decrease.
Out of the studies examined only 7 studies used vitamin C as a therapy rather than a preventative, taking vitamin C tablets post getting a cold. The results indicated that that too didn’t reduce the duration of the cold and were insignificant. (Asfora, 2005)
Another study done by the Australian National University and the University of Helsinki led studies that illustrated the benefits of vitamin C when taken daily were insignificant and didn’t show much benefit. (Anderson,2002)
With only an 8% reduction in the duration of the common cold in adults and 13.6% in children the benefit is quite small and based on evaluation is quite insignificant. (Anderson,2002)
Based on the findings it is clear that Vitamin C consumption on a regular basis does not reduce the chance of an individual contracting the common cold.
However when vitamin C was taken regularly it showed to reduce the duration of the cold but only a small percentage 8-14%. (Asfora, 2005)
Substantial evidence through numerous studies points out that Vitamin C doesn’t help with reducing the duration or severity of the cold at all generally speaking.
Athletes
However, Vitamin C has shown signs of reduction in the duration and severity in athletes in a few studies. (Elwood,2007)
People who exercised intensively who were part of trials that took Vitamin C regularly were found to have a 50% reduction in the duration of their colds; however there may have been other factors to these results. (Elwood, 2007)
This study was published January 31 in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Funding information and details on who conducted the study was not included in the studies. (Asfora, 2005)
Conclusion
When comparing all the studies examined, overall it is clear that vitamin C does not have a significant effect on reducing the common cold. A small percentage was shown on the studies however its still not significant data.
Many of these studies mentioned illustrated that there was very little evidence and small percentage that Vitamin C reduced the duration, severity and incidence of the common cold but can assist in athletes and people who partake in vigorous activity.
However as it still not fully justified and given the safety and low cost of the trials, its best if it is continued in the future and tested on an individual basis to see if Vitamin C is valuable to them or not in terms of combating the common cold.

Water: an Overlooked Essential Nutrient

...Nutri, Health, & Wellness w/ Lab 8 February 2014 Water: An Overlooked Essential Nutrient Welcome, my name is Karina Padilla I am a registered dietician. I have invited you to lunch and learn about, what you will select for a yearlong beverage contract from these three choices water, Gatorade, and Powerade. The role of water in our body are giving cell life, where water is a carrier, distributing essential nutrients to cells as minerals, vitamins, and glucose. It also has chemical and metabolic reactions as it removes waste products including toxins that the organ cells reject and removes through urine and feces. Water is a transport of nutrients in the biochemical break down of what we eat. H2O regulates body temperature, it has a large heat capacity which helps limit changes in body temperature in a warm or cold environment. The elimination of water is an effective lubricant around joints and acts as a shock absorber for eyes, brain, and spinal cord. The goal of drinking fluids during exercise is to prevent dehydration and maintain performance. Fluids preferably with carbohydrates and electrolytes, should be consumed in small amounts every 15 to 20 minutes during exercise. Water and electrolytes serve very important roles in the functioning of the body and sweating can lead to excessive losses of both critical nutrients if not properly replaced. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can adversely impact health and exercise performance. The magnitude of fluid...

Water Soluble Vitamins and the Bodily Functions They Promote

...Water Soluble Vitamins and the Bodily Functions They Promote Vitamins and mineral supplements are items that most people would think are good for their bodies. Unfortunately, this is only a half truth. There are many people that are not aware of the full ramifications of vitamins, minerals, and other non-energy yielding nutrients. You need vitamins and minerals, but in excess they can be poison. Vitamin literally means “life, containing nitrogen.” (Rolfes, Pinna, Whitney 321). The first vitamins contained nitrogen, however vitamins that do not contain nitrogen are just as important to life. Vitamins, as well as minerals, are very important to living beings because they are the substances which assist in the metabolism of energy-yielding nutrients or the development of bodily structures. In the absence of vitamins, there is a wide variety of symptoms that can occur. These things are including, but not limited to, blindness, dementia, and the improper development of bodily structures. The assistance that is provided by vitamins is of high importance, but that is not the only function of vitamins. Vitamins prevent deficiency symptoms, but if the proper dosage is taken they also help your body perform optimally. Your bodily system stays healthy as a result. (Rolfes, Pinna, Whitney 322) Vitamins are not like carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. First of all, vitamins do not provide any energy to the body. (Rolfes, Pinna, Whitney 322) Vitamins are also individual...

For maintaining health, for example, the Chinese has always believed in dressing appropriately for the weather, in particular in the winter the feet must be warm because there is a saying that illness starts from the feet up. And in the summer, no matter how hot it is, always cover the stomach when sleeping because the cold air from the A/C can cause stomach pain and diarrhea. To regulate good health, the Chinese also open their windows every morning to let fresh air in and the stale air out, along with changing shoes by the front door so dirt doesn’t track inside the home. Sugar Consumption in America

...Introduction The number of American people who are obese has increased over the years. This complex condition has affected almost all ages with children obesity being on the rise. Obesity can be linked to the onset of some diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and some heart diseases that have increased the risk of death and reduction of an individual’s health. The answers that we seek are concerned with sugars’ role in the development of obesity and the emergence of related diseases. It is important to consider an individual’s genes when determining vulnerability to obesity but what doctors mostly emphasize is on food intake. As the socioeconomic levels of most Americans rise, diets are increasingly having a higher proportion of sugars while work is shifting into a less physical nature. The high proportion of sugars in the American diet has a direct relationship to obesity and other related illnesses. Is sugar related to obesity and medical disorders associated in the American society? In order to become fully aware of the link between sugars and diabetes, we have to look at the features and nature of sugar. Sugar is a generalized name for a crystalline carbohydrate that is simple, edible and has a sweet flavor. The main types of sugar are sucrose, lactose, fructose and glucose. Glucose, also referred to as blood sugar is the one that circulates in the blood. Table sugar and fruits contain sucrose and fructose respectively. During the process of digestion, carbohydrates...

The difference between 5 grams and 5 micrograms, depending on the substance, can indeed be the difference between life and death. Where should one get such information? From qualified sources, of course. Not from your bro. Want to know about proper dosage? Look in the medical literature and find out what dosages have been shown through experimentation to render the desired effects. Want to know about a proper manufacturing method? Then you need to read technical manuals written by actual engineers. As much as possible, I’ve pointed you to more qualified sources of information than myself throughout this guide. I’ve deliberately left out information about dosages in order to force you to use this as a starting point rather than a definitive resource. At the same time, I’m obviously encouraging DIY experimentation. Allow me to clear up the apparent contradiction. See, I intend for this report to be, among other things, a bit of a shot across the bow of the troubled ship that is the nutritional supplement industry. When anyone can privatelabel the same substandard supplements everyone else is selling and “win with better marketing,” it doesn’t seem there’s much incentive to raise the bar. With the new life style of today’s world, where both parents are working, high demand of work hours and hectic schedules, people tend to divert in fastfood products than cooking at home. This resulted somehow to create health problems of the cumsumers since not everyone in the Food and Beverage Industry is concern about the food they are serving. However, most of them value profit first and unconcious over the health benefits of the food products. Nutrition is a language of healthy life, proper diet and wellness of everyone. Recommendation on Abraham Maslow's Hierarcy of Needs

...MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS I. Introduction: According to Abraham Maslow, a famous psychologist, most people will respond positively to message that will meet their particular time. Maslow theorizes that human needs are based on system of priorities. He uses 5 rung as in ladder or classifications, to describe the hierarchy of human needs. Keep them in mind as you attempt to send message to potential receiver. One of the many interesting things Maslow noticed while he worked with monkeys early in his career was that some needs take precedence over others.  For example, if you are hungry and thirsty, you will tend to try to take care of the thirst first.  After all, you can do without food for weeks, but you can only do without water for a couple of days!  Thirst is a “stronger” need than hunger.  Likewise, if you are very thirsty, but someone has put a choke hold on you and you can’t breathe, which is more important?  The need to breathe, of course.  On the other hand, sex is less powerful than any of these.  Let’s face it; you won’t die if you don’t get it! Maslow took this idea and created his now famous hierarchy of needs. Beyond the details of air, water, food, and sex, he laid out five broader layers:  the physiological needs, the needs for safety and security, the needs for love and belonging, the needs for esteem, and the need to actualize the self, in that order. II. Definition: Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology proposed by Abraham...
