I believe in optimism. It infuses hope into hopelessness and gives people a reason to believe in the face of enormous doubt. Optimism is believing that good ultimately prevails over evil, seeing the positive in everything. When I was four years old, my mom became pregnant with my twin sisters. The twins had a disease known as Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), an intrauterine condition that often results in death or severe handicap for one or both of the babies. Hoping they would both be born healthy. When she travelled to the hospital, I went and visited her everyday, wanting to make her smile and laugh. I kept telling her, “it’s ok mom, it’s ok.” As the days and months dragged on the babies grew. The medicine and the prayers were working. On November 14, 2002 my two sisters were born, Martha Eleanor and Maya Harman. After they were born, they stayed in the neonatal intensive-care unit, or NICU. They were there for a long time, putting a strain on my parents. As the days proceeded, I realized my sisters were not home. I began thinking they were not coming home at all. It was not until I first met them that I knew a miracle had happened. When I first came to visit them at the hospital, I was terrified. There were wires and chords everywhere. The beeping noise from the monitors scared me. When he picked me up, because I was too short to see the babies, my eyes widened. I reached out and touched the plastic case surrounding my sisters, speechless. How could they be so small? After that trip, I frequently asked to go visit them in the hospital.
