When reading this novel two things come to mind. Discrimination of a different race and prejudgment. There’s a saying that goes “don’t judge a book by its cover” and I go by this saying anytime my mind starts to think about judging someone, without actually getting to knowing them. In this novel, an example is shown to the readers of what it really looks likes when you judge a book by its cover and what it could result too. The alien in this novel was of course different from others regarding her circumstances but that’s never a reason to deport someone. No matter what race, color, or even ethnicity a person is everyone and anyone deserves a chance to live that sought after American dream.

Reason being her dislike for the alien girl and tearing the boys first sweetheart away from him. It would be somewhat understandable if this sweetheart was no good for the child and was turning him into a bad kid but that’s not the case. The mother tore these two apart due to race and ethnicity which is something that shouldn’t be a factor when it comes to true love no matter what age. Even though they were young the mother seemed to be fine with the little boy dating but was not ok with him not dating his own kind. This is where the discrimination comes in, because once she separates the two she tries to comfort the boy by telling him that he can make some new friends and find a new sweetheart. She even gives him another girl’s name: Shira Allen. As his sweetheart next door is getting deported she tries her best to have her son forget about her completely. Even though she knows he’ll hate her for a while in her mind she thinks by doing this it’ll all be for the better. In her mind deporting all these aliens will protect her son and will give the world peace but really it won’t change one
