There are five types of powers that managers can use to influence their subordinates: coercive power, reward power, legitimate power, expert power and referent power. Different types of powers can be used in different situations. Some leaders prefer to use certain type of power more often than others. At my restaurant, I will lead my team by exerting mainly referent, reward and legitimate powers. I will also use expert and coercive powers in some seldom situations. I believe in leading by example therefore I would prefer to use referent power whenever it possible. For instance, if I ask my servers to use trays to bring their drinks to the customers I will make sure that I do the same thing. Nothing can be worse than say one thing and do another. I will show employees my respect and concern for their personal needs and will ask them to do things that I will be willing to do myself. Being a role model means doing the right thing and following your own rules. If people would respect and trust you, they would work harder and would need less supervision. Reward power can be used to motivate and encourage employees. For example, to boost wine sale I will offer reward to the waiter who will sell more bottles of wine than anyone else. I will also verbally praise my staff for doing the right thing on the daily bases and will give annual raise base on employees’ performance appraisal. I will use legitimate type of power when hiring employees, making their schedule and performing their annual evaluation. There are circumstances when using coercive power is absolutely necessary. For instance, if employee verbally harassing someone I would let him know that he would be terminated if he would continue behaving that way.

Types of Power

...After watching the tutorials at the end of our lecture, I have found that there are more types of power then I thought of previously. Some of these seem to be effective, while others seem to be less effective. The ones that I find to be the most effective are Referent and Expert powers, I think it is much benefit in a hardworking approach to power, such as with the referent form of power. You can ensure that things get done in an easy and fair manner. Also with the expert form of power, you ensure that you are also on top of the situation, regardless of the surrounding factors, such as people or other stresses. I would like to believe that I have these types of power, but more commonly in my job, I use legitimate power. In most of the time at work I have to be the one to tell all my fellow employees what to do and how to meet our boss demands, therefore meeting our deadline of work is the most important part. Overall I am seen as the authoritative type of management but my boss is more uses of the coercive form of power, which I think is probably the least effective type. It almost makes me want to perform at a lower level when being treated in that way. When he does use this form of power, there are times where I do use some expert power by not responding in a negative way to his coercive attitude. Being aware of these types of power can able to help me identify which types of method I should use when I am the regarding situations, and it also helps me with my leadership skills...

Types of Power

...Running head: TYPES OF POWER The power that I find most effective is legitimate power. It comes from the authority of your rate and position in the chain of command. You use this power in a day-to-day business. Although you might increase responsibility, you can decrease the power if you fail to meet all your responsibilities. I think I have expert power. I always try to influence others around me as I approach a task. I want everyone to see how easy it is to use this power. Although you might have to use expert power with other powers to find it effective, myself being a office manager I have to lead 10+ plus employees. It does get frustrating at times but I still seem to handle the job with a smile. Me dealing with hundreds of different employees I see a lot of situations where I use my expert power. For example, a coworker and I had to go on a business trip for a conference. We get to the hotel and she did not want to comply with the policies of a hotel while checking in. She demanded she would pay cash for a room that had already been paid for on a 3rd party website. She thinks the room was charged to her card and wants it reversed back. Her question was understandable but there was nothing I can do to explain about hotels. I still held my composer even though she was tough to get through. I explained how 3rd party websites reservations work and she finally understood. Even though she might still be upset, there was nothing I can do unless the employee who booked our...

5 Type of Power

...5 Types of Power A. Legitimate Power Legitimate or it is sometimes called authority or formal power, is that which is derived from the person's position in the organization. It exists because organizations find it advantageous to assign certain powers to individuals so that they can do their jobs effectively. All managers have some degree of legitimate power. It stems from the manager's position in the organization and the authority that lies in that position. Subordinates acknowledge the legitimate power that comes from being in a leadership position in an organization. The employees believe that the manager has the authority to direct their actions, and they are willingly to comply with those requests. Like most power, legitimate power is based upon perception and reality. It is based upon the reality that a person holds a particular position in an organization. It's also based on the perception of an employee that someone holding that position has authority to exert control over her. Legitimate power as a source of authority has one distinct advantage over many other sources of authority, which is that it is usually based upon some objective rule or law of the organization. For example, when an employee asks his/her manager to approve his/her personal time off, the employee knows that the manager has legitimate power to either approve or deny that request. Regardless of what is the manager decision, the employee must comply. B. Reward Power It is simply define...

The Most Effective Power Type and Its Use

...and combined with the knowledge we gathered within class lends itself to an interesting assessment. It becomes quite clear that the most effective type of power is not a singular power type at all but a blend of power types to match the individuals being interacted with. Out of the power types that have been presented this week, I find that the reward, referent, and legitimate power types can lead to desired effects within interactions as both parties can reach their intended goal without using a negative form of persuasion to succeed. In the proper situation, a blend of the types would help gain respect and trust while maintaining or improving the morale of those being interacted with. I would say that I as well, use a blend of these three that caters towards the situation at hand in order to achieve optimum results. My choice of power types and their use becomes essential when in a group, a business, or a consumer situation that we use the appropriate type of power to achieve desired effects. As a teammate, business partner, or a potential customer, we must communicate effectively and efficiently so that both sides are satisfied with the outcome of the conversation, venture, or purchase. In the third video, there was an interaction between the waiter and the female customer in which the narrator explained that while his power type was effective in some, or most cases, it was not effective in that situation. The narrator also points out when certain approaches are not working...

Native Americans by European Powers by Many Different Types of Cultures

...Evelyn Fowler AMH2070 MIDTERM ESSAY February 6, 2013 I am going to explain the compare and contrasting treatments of Native Americans by European Powers by many different types of cultures. We will descuss how badly the Native Americans was treated and how they had to overcome so much. I will also explain which methods was effective and which ones was not effective. The story of the Native American has been marked mainly by betrayal and sorrow towards them. Ever since the white men from across the ocean set foot onto this land, the Native American has lost almost everything including ancestral lands, dignity, and even their culture have fallen by the wayside. How interesting it is that the people who came to this land first are the ones who have been short changed. Native Americans have been ridiculed. The stereotype of the dirty dealin' Injun" is just one of numerous examples. This has not helped the Native Americans in any way. Slowly, things are getting better, but only slowly. It ended up tearing the Native Americans away from their land that they called Sacred which was not helpful and right by no means. The Cherokee called this land from Georgia to Oklahoma the Trail of Tears. Native American history is nothing but a trail of tears stretching through five centuries of horror and betrayal of the Native American. The Spanish and Native Americans date back to when Christopher Columbus discovered New World on October...

Power Infuence and Leadership

...Five Types of Leader Power and the Ethical Boundaries that Govern Their Use Eva Oyieyo Judith Risa Felice Renfro Oklahoma Wesleyan University The Five Types of Leader Power Leadership and power are closely linked. People tend to follow those who are powerful. And because others follow, the person with power is usually the leader. But leaders have power for different reasons. Some are powerful because they alone have the ability to give you a bonus or a raise. Others are powerful because they can fire you, or assign you tasks you don't like. Yet, while leaders of this type have formal, official power, their teams are unlikely to be enthusiastic about their approach to leadership. On the more positive side, leaders may have power because they're experts in their fields, or because their team members admire them. People with these types of power don't necessarily have formal leadership roles, but they influence others effectively because of their skills and personal qualities. Do you recognize these types of power in those around you – or in yourself? And how does power influence the way you work and live your life? In this paper, we will discuss the 5 types of leader power, what each means, how a leader uses each of the 5 powers and the ethical boundaries that should govern their use. One of the most notable studies on power was conducted by social psychologists John French and Bertram Raven, in 1959. They identified five bases of power...

...TYPES OF POWER ESSAY MOTIVATION AND LEADERSHIP 1/20/13 BRIAN PHARRIS I learned a lot in watching the types of power videos. I learned that it is five different powers you can display as an individual. Those powers are referent, reward, legitimate, coercive, and expert. These powers are all intriguing to me. Referent power means being trustworthy and going above and beyond the call of duty to do a job you’re ask to do. Reward power is offering something of value to get somebody to do something. Legitimate power is showing authority of power with a certain position or rank. Coercive power is being demanding, intimidating, and using some type of fear to get what you want. Lastly expert power is being comfortable to influence others because of expertise, knowledge, or skill. The type of power I find most effective is reward power. I think reward power is the most effective because usually when you offer somebody some type of reward or something of value it usually motivates them to do their job a lot more. The types of power I think I have as an individual are two types of power. The first power I exude as an individual is referent power. I consider myself to be a very trustworthy, hard working, and going above and beyond to do what ever it takes to get a job completed. The other type of power I display is reward power. As a manager I tend to give my employees certain rewards for goals they make each month hoping that it will motivate them to come to work...

The lecture defines: Referent, reward, legitimate, coercive and expert as five different types of power that Sandy, the manager in charge, use’s in order to achieve her objective. The effectiveness of each type of power is greatly dependent on the ability of the Person of Authority, Sandy; to clearly recognize and understand the need and obstacles his/her situation demands, and apply the proper type of power. In the first lecture Sandy utilizes referent power to empower and motivate Danni to do what she needs by rewarding him with a better section. In the other lectures Sandy applies legitimate power in order to guide and help focus Danni to overcome a potentially troublesome situation with the irate customers. Sandy’s legitimate power motivated Danni to use Expert power and minimize the coercive power applied by the customer. The effectiveness of the different types/tools of power varies according to the demands of the situation at hand. A good leader will learn the ability to recognize different situations and problems and learn to apply the proper remedy of power to the task at hand. In my personal experience and based on my personality type I have always found that using referent and reward power has been a great motivator to others and asset in achieving my objectives. ...energy that they get their power from. This type of power allows energy to be powered from their homes from solar panels then to win power. Each area is different depending on where you live, for example the power company that my family uses is Georgia power. This company has many different type of energy sources, that helps power not only my home, but many homes here in Georgia as well. Our power company produces 1100 megawatts of renewable energy as well as nuclear energy to help power our home. The main type of energy that they use for and energy source is solar energy. This is one of the most valuable types of energies around. In order to be able to use this energy, you first must use solar water heating system, so that it can absorb the suns energy. For it to do this, solar panels are placed on the roof of your home or apartment complex building, allowing it to get the power it needs to power your home. This method is more preferred to many people here in Georgia, to help get the energy they need into their homes. Hydropower is another form of energy that we use here as well. Hydropower is fuel by the water that fall from the dams. Once powered, the water is then released and begins to generate the power that is needed. The thing that makes this energy the most used energy to date is the fact that it doesn’t pollute the air and all the water that is used isn’t removed from the damn either. The energy from the turbine is transferred to a power transformer, which helps increase...

...Managerial Powers in ME : Intro: Organizational power is the capacity to persuade a group to work toward the accomplishment of a company's organizational goals. It depends on the personality traits of the individual exercising the power. There are five types of organizational power: reward, coercive, expert, legitimate and referent. Reward and coercive power are commonly used within organizations. However the use of these two together can decrease the power of the individuals over time. 5 Types of Managerial Powers in ME: by Justin Johnson, Demand Media Businesses are run by people in power. Gena Baker Group Organzinztional Summary

...Bases of Power Within a Company: Apple Incorporated Gena Baker-Smith Phoenix University Abstract This paper will outline and describe the bases of power within an organization. I will point out which powers are formal and ones that are personal. The five types of power are coercive, legitimate, referent, reward, and expert. These “Bases of Power” have been used since they were established in 1959 by two sociologists. There will also be a summary as to how these different types of powers are communicated within a company/organization. In Apple Incorporation, I am sure all five of the types of powers are present within the company. I hope to present you the reader of this paper how they are communicated throughout the company. When one thinks of power they think about having the ability to change things or the way people think or act. Some of these changes can be positive and some can be negative depending on the person and the situation at hand (Merchant 2010). In 1959, American sociologists John French and Bertram Raven established “The Bases of Power” that exist within companies (Merchant 2010).
