...Chrysler & DaimlerAcquisition-Merger Case Study | | Situation faced by company After facing some hardships and bad acquisitions in the 80s and 90s, Daimler-Benz led by Jurgen Schrempp began to see the light in the mid-90s. By focusing on the most profitable businesses within Daimler and reducing the number of businesses at Daimler from 35 to 23, Shrempp was able to post high profits in 1996 and 1997 despite the poor looking financials in the previous years. In order to remain profitable in this highly competitive market, Shrempp knew that the company had to continue to grow. They needed to reach customers down market without compromising their high-quality brand. To do this, they began selling vehicles to the market’s premium niches and were quite successful. Along with broadening their product offering, they were becoming more and more international with their production because of the high amount of revenues being generated internationally. Schrempp knew that these steps would only keep them competitive for so long though. With the nature and frequency of alliances and mergers in the automotive industry becoming more and more frequent, he knew that to keep up with the changing industry and increased time and cost pressures, he had to take another step in order to not fall behind the competition. SWOT analysis Daimler-Benz | Strengths * Attention to detail * Brand image * Engineering * Global distribution network | Weaknesses * High-cost & inefficient...

...There are many indicators that lead us to the conclusion that Mexico is a good potential market for U.S. Dairy products. Population is growing, which will lead to a larger market. The growth of Real GDP and GDP per capita will allow the buyer to buy more which will increase the consumption of Dairy products per head; the consumption of more expensive Dairy products will increase as well due to urbanization. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is one of the dominating factors of trade between U.S. and Mexico. Without having to pay tariffs, U.S. importers can afford to have prices for their products lower than other counties`. Infrastructure, communications and government regulations also tolerate U.S. import of Dairy products to Mexico. And last but not least, the existing gap between production and consumption of Dairy products in Mexico indicates the country`s urging need for imports. U.S. Dairy In 2010, U.S. exports of cheese, total whey products, lactose and other dairy products were valued at $3.71 billion, up 63 percent from the prior year. Export volume totaled 3.04 billion lbs. of U.S. milk solids, up 40 percent from 2009. Mexico ($823 million export value in 2010), Southeast Asia ($693 million, up 141 percent over 2009) and Canada ($436 million) remained the largest destinations for U.S. dairy products. In 2010, 12.8 percent of U.S. milk production (on a total-solids basis) was sold overseas. Dairy Products: 1) Cheese America is a nation of...

With the excessive use of plastics and increasing pressure being placed on capacities available for plastic waste disposal, the need for biodegradable plastics and biodegradation of plastic wastes has assumed increasing importance in the last few years. Awareness of the waste problem and its impact on the environment has awakened new interest in the area of degradable polymers. The interest in environmental issues is growing and there are increasing demands to develop material which do not burden the environment significantly. Biodegradation is necessary for water-soluble or water-immiscible polymers because they eventually enter streams which can neither be recycled nor incinerated. It is important to consider the microbial degradation of natural and synthetic polymers in order to understand what is necessary for biodegradation and the mechanisms involved. This...

...their banks. The country also experiences earthquake regularly ranging from moderate to severe in intensity. We have been suffering from drought like situation of varying degrees from many years and the coastal areas are prone to cyclones. There is no comprehensive, integrated disaster management policy at national level for dealing with major disasters like earthquake of 2005 and floods of 2010 and 2011 partially due to limited resources, economic instability and partially due to absence of well trained and equipped disaster management infrastructure. We also lack proper system for disaster prevention and preparedness that could ensure effective mitigation to reduce the loss of life and property damage in the face of a natural disaster. 2. Disaster management is unfortunately seen as provision of relief rather than the management of all of its phases and long term management of risk. We therefore need a comprehensive preparedness, prevention and mitigation strategy with a view to better manage and coordinate activities of various line ministries, departments and civil society. Pakistan has a traditional relief and response oriented disaster management system, however over a short period of time it is experiencing constructive changes. Present system to respond to medium level disasters is fairly structured and it is quite in place to handle disasters. Nevertheless, our disaster management system to respond small to large scale disasters needs capacity building and...

...Factors in Adolescent Sexual Behavior Among Sub-Saharan African Adolescents RANDY M. PAGE, PhDa COUGAR P. HALL, PhDb ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: This study examines the relationship between sexual behavior, alcohol use, and indicators of psychosocial distress (mental health) of adolescents in 6 sub-Saharan African countries using the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS). METHODS: The sample consisted of 22,949 adolescents from Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe who participated in 2003 or 2004 GSHS surveys. Statistical analysis was conducted to determine whether sexual behaviors increased with levels of psychosocial distress and alcohol use. RESULTS: Sexual behaviors (having sex or having sex with 2 or more people) were associated with both psychosocial distress and alcohol use. Odds ratios showed that both boys and girls reporting psychosocial distress and alcohol use were at higher risk for having sex. Results also indicated that the likelihood of sexual behaviors increased when there was an increase in the number of psychosocial indicators and frequency of alcohol consumption. CONCLUSION: The results of this study are consistent with those conducted in the United States suggesting that sexual behavior, psychosocial distress, and substance use are interconnected. These findings highlight the need for school health education and health services in sub-Saharan Africa, specifically the efforts to reduce psychosocial distress and...
