Cultural Anthropology gives three distinct meanings of cultural relativism: a moral stance that requires anthropologists to suspend moral and ethical judgments when interacting with a culture different from their own, a methodological strategy that allows the anthropologist to pay specific attention to the uniqueness of a culture, and an epistemological position that cultures are unique and therefore knowledge about different cultures is almost inherently not comparable. ...Hi Class, Please let me know specifically if there are problems you are having trouble understanding. If it is just the overall basic principles of accounting, we can go through them until you get the idea. Below is a brief overview: The financial position of a company is measured by the following items: 1. Assets (what it owns) 2. Liabilities (what it owes to others) 3. Owner’s Equity (the difference between assets and liabilities) The accounting equation (or basic accounting equation) offers us a simple way to understand how these three amounts relate to each other. The accounting equation for a sole proprietorship is: Assets = Liabilities + Owner’s Equity The accounting equation for a corporation is: Assets = Liabilities + Stockholders’ Equity If a company keeps accurate records, the accounting equation will always be “in balance,” meaning the left side should always equal the right side. The balance is maintained because every business transaction affects at least two of a company’s accounts. For example, when a company borrows money from a bank, the company’s assets will increase and its liabilities will increase by the same amount. For instance, if the company borrows $10,000, Cash (a normal debit balance account) would be increased (debited, left side) for $10,000, and Notes Payable (this is a normal credit balance account) would be increased for $10,000 (credited, right side). The entry in the General Journal (the record of all...

...California Pizza Kitchen Case FIN 4385 Eric Lundberg Kelly Deeds Kevin Pope Drew Williams Summary of California Pizza Kitchen Recapitalization Proposal * Brief history of CPK (p.3) * Reasons for CPK’s success (p.3) * Ways to facilitate the success of CPK (p.3-4) * Anticipated effect of changing the capital structure on return on equity (p.4) * Anticipated effect of changing the capital structure on cost of capital (p.5) * Expected number of shares of CPK that can be repurchased (p.6-7) * Anticipated effect of changing the capital structure on CPK’s stock price (p.6-7) * Our recommendation (p.7) In order to explore whether or not California Pizza Kitchen should change their capital structure, we must first look at the brief history of the firm to get a better idea of the corporate culture and the firm’s appetite for risk. California Pizza Kitchen started in 1985 and they have been rather successful given that 95% of all restaurants fail in the first two years. They did not fail and even went public in 2000. In fact, as of the end of the second quarter of 2007, CPK has 213 locations in 28 states and 6 foreign countries (Shumadine). The success of California Pizza Kitchen can be attributed to many factors. First, CPK diversifies its revenue streams. Instead of relying on the main business of operating company owned stores for revenue, they also receive revenues from royalties from franchised locations and royalties from Kraft for selling...

...Q3 2013 Financial Highlights October 16, 2013 • This presentation contains non-GAAP measures relating to the company's performance. You can find the reconciliation of these measures to the nearest comparable GAAP measures in the appendix at the end of this presentation. All growth rates represent year-over-year comparisons, except as otherwise noted. • This presentation contains forward-looking statements relating to our future performance that are based on our current expectations, forecasts and assumptions and involve risks and uncertainties. These statements include, but are not limited to, statements regarding expected financial results for the fourth quarter and full year 2013 and future growth in the Payments, Marketplaces and Enterprise businesses. • Our actual results may differ materially from those included in this presentation for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to: changes in political, business, and economic conditions, including any continuing U.S. government shutdown or default; foreign exchange rate fluctuations; our need to successfully react to the increasing importance of mobile payments and mobile commerce and the social aspect of commerce; an increasingly competitive environment for our businesses; the complexity of managing an increasingly large enterprise with a broad range of businesses; our need to manage regulatory, tax and litigation risks (including risks specific to PayPal and Bill Me Later); our need to timely upgrade and...

...operations management, bottlenecks, and experiences that put those concepts into practice. In this essay, I want to focus on my response specifically on constraints and how it applies to my experiences in life. The Theory of Constraints takes on the idiom “a chain is no stronger than it weakest link.” The book refers the weakest link as “Herbie.” This means that the weakest person can have a negative impact to the whole and ultimately damage the outcome. This definition shocks me a little because I’ve always thought a company or a team can function smoothly even with a bottleneck. There is always going to be someone (or something) that works less efficiently than average. Similarly, there is always going to be someone (or something) that works more efficiently than others and can pick up the slack for the team. Eventually everything averages out and we produce enough outcomes to meet our goals. However, that is not the case because the performance of the whole team is not determined by the star player, but by the “Herbie” player in the team. As a third year commerce school student, I’ve had a lot of opportunities to work on different group projects. Every time the professor releases the new teams, most people hope they have someone that is good in finance, strategy, or accounting (depending on the project) in their group so he/she can carry the team. However, after reading the book, I think we should hope that every team member is hard working and committed to reaching the same goal...

...paragraph 11 of AASB 132, ‘financial asset’ means any asset that is: (a) cash; (b) an equity instrument of another entity; (c) a contractual right: (i) to receive cash or another financial asset from another entity; or (ii) to exchange financial assets or financial liabilities with another entity under conditions that are potentially favourable to the entity; or (d) a contract that will or may be settled in the entity’s own equity instruments and is: (i) a non-derivative for which the entity is or may be obliged to receive a variable number of the entity’s own equity instruments; or (ii) a derivative that will or may be settled other than by the exchange of a fixed amount of cash or another financial asset for a fixed number of the entity’s own equity instruments. For this purpose the entity’s own equity instruments do not include instruments that are themselves contracts for the future receipt or delivery of the entity’s own equity instruments. A financial liability, on the other hand, means any liability that is (a) a contractual obligation: (i) to deliver cash or another financial asset to another entity; or (ii) to exchange financial assets or financial liabilities with another entity under conditions that are potentially unfavourable to the entity; or a contract that will or may be settled in the entity’s own equity instruments and is: (i) a non-derivative for which the entity is or may be obliged to deliver a variable number of the entity’s own equity...

...Zion Rebecca Apphia English 101 Exploratory Essay Feb 28, 2014 Care Cost I know a man that died because he couldn’t afford the standard of care. Why is the cost of health care so high and expensive? It has cost many people to refuse to go for checkup or when sick refused to be seen by a doctor because they can’t afford the bills that will come later. Should the cost of care be reduce or remained where it is? Yes, it should be reduce because so many people are dying from chronic diseases. A freelance cameraman's appendix ruptured and by the time he was admitted to surgery, it was too late. A self-employed mother of two is found dead in bed from undiagnosed heart disease. A 26-year-old aspiring fashion designer collapsed in her bathroom after feeling unusually fatigued for days. What all three of these people have in common is that they experienced symptoms, but didn't seek care because they were uninsured and they worried about the hospital expense, according to their families. All three died. Research released this week in the American Journal of Public Health estimates that 45,000 deaths per year in the United States are associated with the lack of health insurance. If a person is uninsured, "it means you're at mortal risk," said one of the authors, Dr. David Hammerstein, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. The researchers examined government health surveys from more than 9,000 people aged 17 to 64, taken from 1986-1994, and then followed...

...Rationale I have selected Bell’s palsy as a minor health subject for critical analysis for three principal reasons. Firstly, it is the most common disorder affecting the facial nerves (Ardour, 1978). Secondly, research has noted that there appears little consensus in the literature regarding the causes and management of Bell’s palsy. Additionally the diagnosis is one of elimination. Tiemstra and Khatkhate (2007) demonstrate there are many other conditions which can mimic symptoms (See appendix one). I therefore wanted to analyse the available literature in order to be able to competently and safely recognise the condition in the urgent unscheduled care environment. Background Petruzelli (1991) states that Bell’s palsy is an acute paralysis of the facial nerve first described by the Scottish surgeon and anatomist, Sir Charles Bell . Niparko (1993) elaborates that it is a generally unilateral paralysis or weakness of facial musculature consistent with facial nerve damage and dysfunction. The anatomy of the facial nerve can be found in appendix two. Pietersen (2002) states that the cause is unknown, however, whilst the exact aetiology of Bell’s palsy is still debated, viral infections, vascular ischaemia, autoimmune inflammatory disorders and heredity have been postulated as causative. (Adour 1982, Burgess 1984, Lorber 1996). Murakami et al (1996) proposed that reactivation of herpes simplex virus in the geniculate ganglia was causative. A herpes simplex cause is corroborated...
