Surprisingly, every quarter pound of hamburger meat that someone consumes destroys 60 square feet of rainforest. Rainforest everywhere are already being demolished in the first place. The reason is because a lot of the cattle consumed in the United States have been bulked and fattened up and raised in past rainforest that was transformed to grazing grounds. In a bar graph by Statistics New Zealand, It shows the percent of farm land used to the total land. The most amount of farm land used is by pastures (or land for grazing animals). A Bangladeshi family living off of basic food staples like rice, beans, vegetables and fruit may live on one acre of land or less, while the average American who consumes nearly 270 pounds of meat a year, needs 20 times that amount. Almost 30% of the accessible ice-free land area of the earth is now inhabited by livestock, or for growing food for those animals to eat. In addition, millions of pounds of antibiotics are added to animal food a year to accelerate the growth of cattle. However, this contributes to the rise of resistant bacteria, and in result makes it harder to treat human illnesses because the bacteria know what to fight off. This can lead to a huge problem for people who consume contaminated food and for the producing company of that food. I believe even though there are strict FDA guidelines and rules, some contaminated food may slip through the cracks every once in a while. If we were to eliminate a majority of animal farming, then the chances of contamination would most likely also
