Veronica Roth

Veronica Roth was born on August 19, 1988 in New York City. Roth is the youngest out of 3 children. Her mother is Polish and her father is German. When Roth was only 5 years old, her parents got a divorce. Shortly after the divorce her mother remarried to Frank Ross. Roth grew up in Barrington, Illinois. Veronica Roth isn’t very ordinary, her life is very interesting. Roth is 26 years of age, she is almost 6 feet tall! Not only does Veronica Roth write in her free time, her other interests are: cooking, poetry, biology, and psychology. She is also into writing blogs about her and her daily life. In the year 2011 Roth married to Nelson Fitch. Nelson Fitch is a chicago based photographer.

As she wrote the Divergent series, she often struggled. Her anxiety tried to take control many times while she wrote. Roth isn’t even the least bit ashamed about her anxiety. “I was a psych learning about exposure therapy.”she stated. Roth did a lot of free-writing in her spare time that she had. One day while Roth was free-writing she became motivated to write the divergent series. She also took psychology, which gave her many ideas for the series. Growing up and reading various other books, she became fascinated with the idea of groups and factions. She liked the idea of being split up with people like you. She got the idea of “Dauntless”, from listening to a song on a road trip. The lyrics talked about bravery, and leadership. Roth was asked which faction she would choose, she chose “Abnegation,” since it described her. She found it therapeutic to create the character Beatrice because it seemed to fit her personality. As she wrote the series she had always compared herself to Tris. Roth stated that she is like Tris in many ways except for her love life. “I would never date Four, to many secrets and not enough jokes.” The Divergent series won many awards such as: the Teen Choice Book award, the Chicago Public Library award, and many other
