Society and Video Games

Video games are still a very new form of media. Compared to other forms of entertainment like books, television, or movies, video games are still new and very misunderstood. As video games rise in popularity many people like to blame them for the problems of modern society, although other forms of entertainment involve common elements. Video games need to be seen just as equal to a fan of movies or books. They do not always have to be mindless entertainment and can also be helpful in your daily life. Just like how people do not judge all television shows based on The Jersey Shore or Teen Mom, video games should not be judged by popular games like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto which are at times just mindless entertainment but not harmful. If you do not know what these are then just think about the most popular things amongst your favorite form of media or hobby.

A common argument that parents and people unfamiliar to video games like to address is how unhealthy they can be. In a sense this can be very true but enjoy it in moderation, too much of anything can be a bad thing. Other studies have found an association between compulsive gaming and being overweight, introverted and prone to depression. The studies didn't compare the benefits of gaming with such downsides. (Hotz. 2012) I come from a family of people who enjoy video games very often and none of us are considered overweight or have any signs of health problems but we may be an exception. It is obviously unhealthy, especially for younger children, to be sitting down playing video games all day when it is recommended that they be outside more. Though they have just become the primary target for this problem of recent years, they are not fully to blame. On occasions when the problem is not video game related, its children and teenagers spending time on the internet or watching television. While these problems are known and have been addressed, video games have taken more fire because of advertising and popularity. Everyone has a hobby and it is not always active in the eyes of others. Although with video game inventions like the Wii, Playstation Move, and Kinect, game developers are trying to get their players to become more active. These relatively new forms of gaming are quickly becoming the future for gaming and showing that gaming can also be used for working out. There was another popular title on many consoles called Guitar Hero. This game lets you play songs using a plastic guitar as your controller. It was very unrealistic in the way you played but many people who had never tried to play guitar before liked the feeling they got and actually went out and purchased a guitar. I have a personal experience with this as my brother is one of these people. Guitar Hero is the only reason why he ever though he could play guitar. After playing it as a child he bought a guitar and taught himself how to play it, no lessons and completely on his own. Such a life changing event came from a video game. Video games have many uses but they need time to be understood and given a chance to changed people’s lives much like my brother’s.

Besides staring at a television all day, spending all day reading and then another day playing video games all day can virtually be the same thing. Not many people see things this way because parents automatically think reading or movies can hardly be a bad thing. The public news is very quick to downsize a video game based on its contents and brings a negative aspect to the idea of video games and their storytelling. The second a video game’s story involves more mature elements like it becomes an outrage yet movies get away with it all the time. It is more likely for a video game to more heat over what it involves than a movie with the same plot. So is the fine line playability? When the viewer has control over what happens it suddenly becomes a bad thing even when the game has a mature rating and should not be played by anyone younger anyways. Just like with movies, it is common for people younger than the rating to actually play or watch them. The decision should be left up to the parents, if they let their kid play video games above their rating then so be it and if they don’t then wait until they are of age. That is what the rating is there for and people who bash video games often forget this.

The same people causing issue for video games being a respected form of entertainment is the uneducated parents who sell their children games with adult themes. The ESRB rating system is already in place and legal laws make it so underage children cannot buy games of a “Mature” rating. Everything is in place much like movies with their age ratings but they are not respected to the same degree. Books have absolutely no rating systems in place but yet people know not to let their child read “Fifty Shades of Grey”, books have the wonderful affect of being respected and seen as helpful to the ever educating mind while video games are seen as brainless fun for a short period of time. If one was to read the back of a mature rated game they would look everything there is to know of what kind of content they can expect. In plain view it may say that it includes anything from nudity to strong language or blood and gore to drug use. Everything is already there but video games are seen like they are only for children and in the end it hurts them as a whole. A very popular game called Grand Theft Auto always hits the news with each sequel because of its contents but yet it has nothing more than what a rated R movie does but yet it is up for recommendation to be banned completely. Why? Because it is bought for children by the uneducated parents I mentioned earlier. The 5 installment of the very same Grand Theft Auto series was able to break world records for sales alone. The very same game that was almost banned due to its mature content was the form of entertainment to rival the Marvel Avengers movies in sales alone.

Video games can used in our society as tools to prove points much like how documentaries do when there is a specific issue in our nation, they have as much power as anything else. Take a game called Mass Effect for example, with the media seeing playability as the only real difference video game has to offer this game blew up all over the news for a good bit of time of its release. In the game you can create your character and travel galaxies as a space marine, you get to choose what your character can say or do in any situation. They wanted this to be revolutionary for the gaming industry but what made it so controversial? You could make your character have a homosexual relationship and not only that, for it to actually display the actions on screen. News broadcasts and other groups blasted the game for this idea alone and in the end they won because the company, Bioware, gave in thinking it would hurt their sales. They had he changed to be the first ones to try something new and gave in because people look down on the thought of a video game doing such a thing. They should have stood by what they felt was right and looked at it like the art form it is. It is bad enough that video games of the past were getting blamed for other things such as murders and health issues. Famous incidents involving murder have often been linked to video games but they are not the only one. Music, movies, and books have all in some way been used as an excuse for crime. Murders have taken place where the murderer has blamed a form of entertainment for their actions and it is not just video games, even books, the most “best” thing to spend your free time on has apparently been used as reference to said murders. Just look at the murder of John Lennon, the murderer, Mark David Chapman, claimed that the book “The Catcher in the Rye” is the reason for his actions and what happened as a result? The book instantly went on the banned list and shot up in popularity. A well known incident with video games involves a teenager who murdered his parents because they would not let him buy a mature rated game, Halo 3 to be specific. This led to a major battle against video games, but the one problem is that Halo 3 was not to blame; the contents on the disc itself had nothing to do with it. The game was nothing more than something he wanted, it could have been anything else and it would have made an impact. The death of his parents should have been fully on himself rather than throwing to another subject. “… The issue of violence in video games is overblown (especially in a world where real people are regularly killing real people in wars across the world that we watch on television.) (Gee. 2007) The same goes for every other incident as well as the famous Columbine shootings, the media coverage was all over what video games they were playing and what music they were listening to. What was to blame on the video game side? A very popular six year old game that was (and still is) played by millions, Doom. It is amazing that even now in 2014 that is the only incident trying to put blame on the game itself.

The industry as a whole should be utilized by more than what it already has as a huge money making industry. If more company’s started branching out and started making games it would change so much. High budget games and games made for phones and tablets are really helping out this factor. Capitalizing on video games a good way of making money many people in social media have jumped on to trends and started making money through video games by a little thing called “Let’s Plays”. A “Let’s Play” is a simple video that can be made by anyone where you are basically watching someone play a game and you are there for the commentary. People make crazy amounts of money doing this as absurd as that might sounds. If it sounds hard to believe just go to YouTube right now and look at the top subscriptions and almost half of the top fifty are gamers making videos of this variety. The number one on that list is one of these people, his username is “Pewdiepie” and he is able to make money through the number of advertisements on his videos. He has proven to be a helpful contributor to making video games into what a helpful thing they can be. As he feels very lucky for his internet fame he has contributed to a number of charities and helped raise awareness for others. He has raised a ton of money towards various charities all by himself.

Video games are just a hobby and that is all they should be, it is a very popular field of entertainment and that is all it should be unless you make a career out of it. Just because something is “wrong” in the public eye does not make it a bad thing, they just do not understand it. If they were as bad as news and studies have made them out to be they would be gone by now or slowly becoming nonexistent which they are not. Ratings have always been in place since they were demanded but they still need to be understood. Video games are the fastest growing form of media in existence right now from games making massive amounts of money to talking over social media sites such as YouTube and simple search engines. Many people rely completely on video games for their income from entertainers to the very people who help make the games like voice actors, artist, directors, to testers much like every other form of entertainment out there. Video games are here to stay and they are not going anywhere. In due time they will be accepted much like every other form of media we just have to wait and be patient because there is still a lot of positive things we can learn from them. In my opinion I know they will be respected and in due time video games will be seen as equal as an art form as well as anything else but by how society treats new things the next new form of entertainment will most likely be ridiculed until it earns its place.

Although violence isn’t the most common outcome, the quick satisfaction in the game play causes children to become unfocused on one subject for more than a few minutes.  This is one of the more long term effects that video games have on an individual.
