Violence in the workplace has become so bad throughout each state and in the world today. Workplace violence has not only cost American employers in dollars but also in cents. The violence has been taking its toll on the employees day to day. There are beyond numerous numbers of nonfatal acts of violence in the workplace. Who would have thought that waking up in the morning and going to work would be so bad and targeted by violence, discrimination and even some retaliation at work? This has become so sad and disturbing. Now-a-days, children cannot even go to school without being bullied or harassed. The article that was chosen is called “Trends in the Workplace Violence in the Remote Area Nursing Workforce”. This is a very informative article that speaks about the types of violence and how it has increased within the last decade. The article has taken some of the present data of violence in the workplace and compared it to the data that was collected about 13 years ago. The setting of this article took place in Australia and was focused on a few hundred nurses whom worked in rural areas throughout Australia, who worked in the health facilities. According to the article it stated that there has been an “increase in all incidents” that were “reported violence in the workplace between 1995 and 2008” (Opie, Lenthall, & Dollard, 2010). Several times of violence that had been reported were either verbal aggression, physical and property damage. The three types of violence that were listed are the most frequently experienced and very common throughout other workplaces. In reference to the article, some parts were taken into consideration and compared to ones with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder also known as PTSD. With that being said in the article it stated that “some violence in the workplace correlates with PTSD” (Opie, Lenthall, & Dollard, 2010). With the increase in violence in the workplaces; it has been said that violence in the workplace has been known for one of the reasons for nurse resignation. There are several types of bullying whether it is in the workplace, at home or in school. There is a type of bullying that has been taking place a lot over the past few years known as cyber-bullying which has led to some suicides of young teenagers. Workplace bullying is usually seen as an act or a verbal comment resulted in “mentally” hurting or making a person feel isolated within the workplace (Privitera, & Campbell, 2009). In some cases negative physical contact can also be a result of bullying. However, in most cases bullying involves repeated incidents or behavior that is basically intended to hurt, offend, humiliate and even intimidate a person or even a group of people. Some examples of bullying within the form of aggression can be both obvious and subtle. Some examples may include but are not limited to: spreading malicious rumors or gossip that isn’t true, undermining a person’s work, physically abusing or threatening a person, and intruding on a person’s privacy by spying or stalking (Privitera, & Campbell, 2009). Those are only a few examples of bullying that can happen within a workplace. Some other examples that can also happen in a workplace are: assigning unreasonable duties or workload on one person only because that person is not popular or favorable at work or there is another example which is similar to that one but there is one where the person has less work and starts to feel useless in the situation. Unfortunately, there are times when it is hard to know bullying is happening at the workplace. Some people take feedback as some type of bullying, however, feedback are intended to help assist the employees with their work and not there to hurt someone. As we know that violence and bullying within a workplace can turn hostile and have an impact on a person severely. There are some strategies that can maybe help implement to manage the impact of violence in the workplace. In most healthcare facilities they have a violence prevention program which is there to go over some job safety, security and even to go over the goals of the workplace. One of the goals would include some objective to prevent workplace violence and to be able to adapt to a specific situation in each establishment. In most of these programs they create a policy which states that there is zero tolerance for workplace violence, whether it is verbal or nonverbal threats. Each and every staff member including the managers, supervisors, patients and even the visitors will know about the policy. Not only should the management have a plan to violence in the workplace but the employees should also prepare a place to manage violence at work. In order to manage the violence at work, the first thing to do is to eliminate the opportunity for violent or threatening behavior. Managers should go over areas of work where the employees are more likely to be exposed to violence where as some places are minimal. Also, there needs to be some control of the violence. By doing this there needs to ways to prevent any type of violence in a work area. There are a number of incidents that may be easier than others. Sometimes it may help if the employees are involved in changes within the facility or in the area that they work in. Sometimes changes to the work environment can help, like redesigning the waiting area and some calming surrounding. Violence in the workplace is hard on a lot of people, whether they are young teenager or in their forties. Not everyone is going to get off clean without experiences some type of violence within their workplace. There is always that gossip and talking behind people’s back that gets a lot of employees into trouble in the workplace. Maybe those types of people love the drama and should be an actor on a soap opera not in the health care field. It is very important that people who work in the healthcare field come to work with their smiles on their face and ready to do anything that is thrown at them. Even if it is a lot they should do what they are asked. If help is needed or they feel the workload is a bit heavy then they should speak with their manager and maybe they will do something. In the healthcare field everything is team work, so whether one person is done with their to do list for that day, they should help someone who is running behind and time is short. Working in a health field there is a lot of head-butting going on and attitudes that should not be brought to work. There are different types of bullying in the workplace such as verbal, physical and mental impacts. Working in fear for one’s personal safety can function as a major occupational stressor (Opie, Lenthall, & Dollard, 2010).
