...Secondly, using proper supraglottic airways adjuncts may aid in the resuscitation of a patient if used correctly. There are three adjuncts that may be used to help maintain a patient’s airway; the OPA, NPA and King LT. “The OPA are for patient’s that are unconscious and without a gag reflex. If a gag reflex is present, you’ll have to remove the OPA. The NPA is used in conjunction with an OPA, or separately if a gag reflex is present with the OPA. NPA’s are also used if OPA’s aren’t maintaining the patient’s airway adequately, 1 or 2 NPA’s may be inserted, unless a injury above the clavicle has occurred, insertion of an NPA may then cause a basal skull fracture. If you meet resistance when inserting an NPA, stop and remove it, you don’t want...

...1 Summary: The story is about a country mouse and a city mouse. The country mouse lives in a simple house and eats simple food. By comparison, the city mouse lives in a beautiful house and eats well every day. The country mouse wants the life of the city mouse. However, after he goes with the city mouse to taste experience (CH) city life, he does not like it any more. The country mouse prefers to be poor and happy rather than be rich and afraid. (82) Commentary: In my opinion, the story is quite interesting and inspiring in general because it teaches us a life lesson. To me (=I think), the ending seems the most interesting part of the story. This is because in the end the country mouse suddenly realizes/learns that he does not want a rich and dangerous life, but a simple and happy one. I like this part because it also inspires us/leads us to think deeply about our own lives. We might think that a good life means a rich life. However, (=But) according to the story, a good life should be simple and happy. It gives us a different idea about life, which I also agree with itthis . Therefore, (=so) I think this story is interesting and inspiring. (122) Deconstruction: yes, this forms a very good base for your teaching script – well done! VPs: GREEN: Mental*8; > BLUE: Relational*6; > PINK: Material*3 Mental process and relational process are significant in this commentary. A few material verbs occur. Reason: Mental verbs construe both the change of...

...University’s biology department in one of the top 40 biology departments in the country. It was accredited before and needs not to be accredited once every ten years. The deciding association which does the accreditation is AADSB (American Association of departments and schools of Biology). The process consists of submitting documents by the University and an in-department visit by the panel of Biology deans. The most important deciding factor for accreditation is the ratio of full-time faculty to part-time faculty. The dean of the Maluvius University plays an important role in University matters and therefore would have a great influence over the accreditation of the Biology department. Having the knowledge of the fact that there are more adjuncts teaching than AADSB (American Association of departments and schools of Biology) would like to see at the University, the dean is “hiding or divulging information” i.e. failing to disclose the fact that the ratio of full-time to part-time faculty is more than AADSB (American Association of departments and schools of Biology) would expect. This would lead to questions as to why the dean didn’t fix the ratio beforehand the AADSB (American...

...ON SEMANTIC FEATURES OF PURPOSIVE ADJUNCTS IN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE Le Thi Bich Hanh University of Foreign Languages, The University of Danang Email: lebichhanh_dn@yahoo.com ABSTRACT Having a good guide to translate appropriately English purposive adjuncts (PAs) into Vietnamese and vice versa has become monumentally necessary. So, in this study, we would like to compare and contrast English and Vietnamese PAs in terms of their semantic features in meaningful interactional situations in the strong belief that using appropriate PAs, writers and speakers can reduce the negative meanings of their sentences and increase the acceptability of the readers and hearers in communication. In terms of theory, the study focuses on identifying the similarities and differences in the uses of adjuncts to express purposes and hence finding the cultural factors affecting those choices. In practice, the study hopes to provide some implications in language teaching and learning as well as translating. The practical information in the research can raise language users’ awareness of the subtle differences between the uses of PAs in both languages so that they can fulfill their communicative purpose in real life. Key words: purposive adjuncts; purposive subordinators; semantic features; compare; implication * Introduction Most languages in the world have particular linguistic devices for expressing purposes implicitly and explicitly. Purposive adjuncts (PAs) are some of those devices....

...Michele was one of the union representatives that we had the pleasure of interviewing. She is the chief negotiator for adjunct faculty here on campus, and has been so since the beginning of this group. Michele faces a rather unique situation here at SIUE because part and full time faculty members are all part of one union. Also, the union for adjunct faculty is not mandatory, therefore whether you paid dues or not, you would still receive the same benefits as those who are unionized. In our interview, we got to gain insights into Michele’s thought processes she uses while getting ready for a negotiation. Michele’s explained to us some of her background in negotiations, as well some major methods she uses. These methods discussed were; preparation, relationships, opening and closings, and also many other words of wisdom that she provided us with. After talking with Michele, I could definitely see how passionate she is in negotiating and how applying that in one’s own job can make you great at what you do. One major factor of importance is preparation. She explained how you not only have to know yourself and what things you want, but you also need to know the person across the table from you (PowerPoint April 6th am). Michele represented the adjunct faculty so the way she got to know her people and their various needs was to send out surveys and emails to each of them. In these forms of communication her hopes were to find out what needs were important to them. Gathering...

...Leadership and Budgeting in a Higher Education Setting Decision-making, policy, finance and budgeting are all areas that one will encounter as a higher education administrator. There are multi-facets of leading a higher education department and managing that department’s budget. An administrator must be strategic when planning and budgeting. Understanding higher education administration requires knowing how to define the basic objectives of the department, while efficiently and effectively allocating limited resources to accomplishment departmental and institutional goals (June, 2013, par. 40). In other words, one must know the direction in which the department or institution needs to move to fulfill its mission. According to Varlotta (2010), “The responsibility-centered approach engenders a broader understanding of university budgeting since larger numbers of administrators are compelled to recognize and manage all of the costs of doing business” (p. 17). This paper discusses significance in leading, planning, decision making processes, and budgeting in higher education. Additionally, this paper presents a case study, a real world scenario that involves, strategizing due to state budget cuts. A strategic plan must act as a road map for carrying out budgetary tactics and achieving long-term results. Proficient leadership arises by defining how members can support the overall strategy of a budget; therefore, in order to boost directorial and financial performance, faculty...

...an educated claim staff, settlement referrals steadily increased thereafter to the level of $10 million in annual savings. After eight years and several position changes, I left one large insurance carrier for more growth potential with Prudential Financial. Since changing companies, I’ve begun to think more about the best way to merge my interests with my work experience. I’ve volunteered to work on projects to streamline procedures and develop best practices, but I’ve been just that, a volunteer. My workload does not permit the attention and focus required to identify, plan, change and implement a project through its life cycle. Why can’t I spend more time doing this? I want to spearhead projects, alleviate task heavy directions and optimize workflows. I want to become a Project Manager. In an adjunct sort of way, I’ve been working towards that distinction. Obtaining an MBA from UMass would give me the credentials to realize this goal. ...

I had the pleasure of having Tian Tian as a student in my class last year and would be happy to provide a recommendation on her behalf for the Research Analyst position at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Tian was one of the best students in my class and consistently did A level work on all assignments. The course required term papers on selected countries and her papers on Mongolia and Taiwan were professional caliber. Both papers required sourcing and analyzing macroeconomic and firm specific data. Her work was technically competent and the presentation provided a nice assessment of the economic prospects and investment opportunities available in these countries. Tian Tian also regularly contributed to the in-class discussions and consistently made well thought out and insightful comments. Tian Tian and I have remained in communication since she graduated and several times she has made me aware of articles that were of relevance to my class which I much appreciated. Again, I want to vouch for Tian Tian’s technical competency and also her ability to write and speak in a professional and fluent manner. Please feel free to contact me if I can provide any further information. Kind...

...“How to build a career?” from the view of Successful Businessman Mike Dolan Dolan spoke to students in Financial Markets and Institutions, a summer class taught by Enzo DiCostanzo, an adjunct professor of finance. DiCostanzo is a Newark native, a 1993 graduate from the Newark College of Engineering and an economic advisor at Samarian Group. Dolan is vice president at Samarian Group, in Manhattan, where he’s responsible for business development and client relations and a partner in Wealth Management firm Princeton Blazer Advisors. He came to Samarian from Voyager Group, a private equity investment firm, where he was responsible for government relations and business development. He also served as vice president for Voyager Jet Center, a private aviation company servicing clients in the sports and entertainment industries. Dolan spoke to the class for a half hour about his career and his education at Penn State, and then took questions. College is the time to learn new skills and to work well in teams, said Dolan. One should also study what one is passionate about, he added. When he first entered Penn State, he studied the sciences because he was good at them. But he soon realized he was passionate about marketing, so he switched his major to business. Many of the students in the class are athletes, and they asked Dolan about the roles of competition, networking and deal making in the business world. Dolan said that athletes often make good business people because they...

...Many of the local and national headlines are calling attention to how universities will be handling large budget cuts and tumbling balances in endowment funds. The market downturn and struggling economy are mainly to blame for these budget cuts. As a student, my main concern is will I still be able to take the courses I need and want. Our textbook offered a look at break-even analysis, and the article I selected shows how break-even analysis can be used by universities to determine the profitability of all of its course offerings. While the "Show Me the Money" article is from 2004, it is very applicable to the current situation universities find themselves in. The following formulas are used to determine course profitability: Revenue – Variable Costs = Contribution Margin – Fixed Costs = Profit State Funding + Tuition Revenue + Lab Fees = Direct Revenue Faculty Salaries + Adjunct Faculty Salaries + Other Salaries + Opt Exp = Direct Expense Direct Revenue – Direct Expense = Contribution Margin Using these formulas, contribution margin can be understood as course profit or loss. After defining the formulas above, the authors applied it to enrollment data and were able to rank courses according to overall contribution margin. The courses with negative contribution margins were not making a fixed-cost contribution. It is logical for the general courses required by all majors to have a higher contribution margin due to the higher enrollments...
