...College Essay Most college scholarships ask you to write a 500+ word essay, which isn’t that bad, but what is the reason behind it? Do most people that require an essay ever read them? Seriously, who has time to read a 1000+ word essay and chose from the best. Personally, that doesn’t seem to be fair because most people have trouble writing a paragraph, and then we are expected to write a huge essay telling about something in our life or respond to a weird question with a topic that most people won’t even think about. With topics such as, “Explain how your life changed with a death of a parent,”or “How would college affect your career,” or even “Why I deserve this scholarship.” Well, I’m going to explain everything I possibly can. The death of any parent would make anyone change, because no one is the same; we are all unique. With my dad’s death I didn’t know how to act for the longest time, and I still don’t; I say this because the day my father died, the doctor called all of my family back where he lay, hooked up to life support, lifeless. Just looking at his body, I didn't feel anything; however, I looked at the situation as is he wasn’t really dead because I was 12 and didn’t know...

With the increasing complexity of health information and health care settings, most people need additional information, skills, and supportive relationships. Societal expectations of health care professionals are rapidly changing and increasing. Society has high expectations of health professionals, expecting them to provide leadership roles in the community. In addition to societies’ expectations of leadership, universities expect faculty to demonstrate leadership in a scholarly manner. Scholarship is a fundamental expectation for anyone in an academic role. Scholarly leadership proceeds through the academic ranks of a university demonstrating evidence of effectiveness of teaching, research, professional activities, and community contributions. Boyer (1990) defines scholarship as “those actives that systematically advance the teaching and practice of nursing through rigorous inquiry that is significant to the profession is creative; can be documented; can be replicated or elaborated and can be peer-reviewed through various methods” (p. 129). ...beings, we tend to adapt to our own culture quite fast and we become used to perceiving our group of people as the only thing that is "good." We fear wanting to assimilate or broaden our knowledge to other cultures, for it is our natural instinct to shut out anything unfamiliar to us. In her essay, "Arts of the Contact Zone," Mary Louise Pratt argues for importance of understanding the point where two cultures clash, the contact zone, and that it can be powerful to engage in one's culture by expanding our grasp of knowledge and wisdom in the diversity we live in today. Pratt introduces three major concepts in her argument that exemplify the objective of her essay: the contact zone, autoethnographic texts, and transculturation. Upon viewing two other pieces by Richard Rodriguez, “The Achievement of Desire” and Gloria Anzaldua’s “How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” Rodriguez and Anzaldua demonstrate Pratt's argument by supporting her concepts about the influence of contact zones between two juxtaposing cultures. In her argument, "Arts of the Contact Zone," Pratt introduces the theme of her argument, the contact zones: the point where cultures clash and come together in unison. Where one culture has a lot more power than the other. A contact zone is the root of how every race and ethnicity should come under a consensus as to understanding the underlying meaning of each other's differences and looking at perspectives in order to break down unnecessary barriers people put up...

I sleep no more than six hours a night because of my desire to expertly meet my many commitments. Throughout my life, I have worked as long and as hard as I possibly can to effect beneficial changes in both school and society. During the summer of tenth grade, I took a number theory course at Johns Hopkins University with students from Alaska, California, and Bogota, Colombia. Similarly, during the summer following eleventh grade, I was one of ninety students from New Jersey selected to attend the Governor's School in the Sciences at Drew University. At Drew, I took courses in molecular orbital theory, special relativity, cognitive psychology, and I participated in an astrophysics research project. For my independent research project, I used a telescope to find the angular velocity of Pluto. With the angular velocity determined, I used Einstein's field equations and Kepler's laws to place an upper bound on the magnitude of the cosmological constant, which describes the curvature of space and the rate of the universe's expansion. In addition to...

...So, I chose none other than Marques Whitmire to interview. I called upon Marques for an interview and he agreed. Although Marques was a very busy man, he fit me into his schedule. He was in Atlanta on a business trip for the Honda Battle of the Bands and he arranged an interview for October 17th at two p.m. at Starbucks. I wanted to give a good impression so I was at Starbucks fifteen minutes before two shortly before Marques arrived. Marques walked in as if he had just left a business meeting. He was wearing a black suit, white shirt, black dress shoes, purple tie, and a pair of Calvin Klein spectacles that gave him a look that was hard to top. When I saw him, that’s what I imagined myself to be in a couple years. We both greeted each other. We got up and ordered caramel frappes and immediately got this interview started. “When did your love for writing begin,” I asked him. Marques begin to tell me that his love for writing didn’t just start. Marques stated sarcastically, “I think I was born to write. I learned to write before I learned to walk.” After saying this, I couldn’t do anything but laugh, which lightened the mood up...

...Dominick Cima English 102 Sec. 401 31 January 2015 Argument Essay Paid to Play? Picture Morgantown on a warm Saturday in August. The streets are buzzing with students and families, and nothing but blue and gold tailgates for as far as the eye can see. This is also the case for every other college in the country. College football has become increasingly more popular over the past few years. It has even got to the point that players and coaches have raised the idea that players should be paid. This essay will focus mainly on collegiate football players and whether or not they should be payed. I used to play football in college and I, for one, do not think players should be paid. I believe that, if they were to pay players, the money should be used to benefit the their education in the form of scholarships. Also paying athletes will individualize the sports, much like how professional sports are now. Lastly, paying all athletes would cost far too much for the NCAA. Scholarships as Currency If college athletes were to be paid, it should be in the form of scholarships. From my own experience colleges have switched from the traditional four year scholarship, to one year grants. This is where the argument first stems from. A four year scholarship guarantees the athlete financial support throughout their four year stay at the institution. It covers all the basic finances of a college student such as tuition, fees, and room and board(Mitchell). On the other...

... Persuasive Essay #10 College is that step into adulthood. You live on your own, make decisions by yourself, and etc. Many college students have the burden of student loans. On top of that they want to work hard for good grades. Making one mistake in college can honestly affect you for the rest of your life. Classes and teachers are way tougher than they are in high school. So do you think it is really necessary to have them do extra community service? College students should not be required to do community service. First, college students shouldn’t be allowed to do community service because of keeping up with a good academic record. Grades are an important factor in college. You honestly can’t afford to slack off. Statistics states,” 75% of college students suffer from major anxiety”. Focusing is a major priority for all your classes if you want to strive for good grades. You need to work consistently on reports or essays and study so that the material is a known thing to you. As a matter of fact, college students shouldn't be allowed to do community service because of limit of time with students who do sports. Most people don’t go to college just for education but to pursuit of a sport with a scholarship. A NYU student stated, “I have a scholarship for crew and practices are at least 5 hours, I have barely have no time for school work let alone do anything else”. “I also have to maintain a 3.6 GPA or my scholarship is gone”. If a person gets a scholarship for a sport...

...“amateurism” of the athlete. This is a very difficult subject for many people to talk about and is very hard to pick a side unless you experience the legality of this word first hand. Many people say that “student-athlete” means that the word student precedes the word athlete so henceforth meaning that the athlete’s school work is more important than the athletics. When in fact that has nothing to do with the subject at hand, it was first used to sever any legal ties with workman’s compensation and the NCAA as seen in the court case for Ray Dennison. “Amateurism” on the other hand is another word mention in the essays from Branch and Van Rheenen. “Amateurism” as seen in “Exploitation in College Sports […]” is used by the NCAA to “maximize profit”, eliminate taxation on their income, eradicate any legal ties with worker’s compensation, and discharges themselves from being titled as an “illegal cartel” (555). In Branch’s essay “The Shame of College Sports” he calls both of these words “cynical hoaxes” which I cannot agree with him more. The National Collegiate Athletic Association uses these words exclusively to clear themselves from any legal encounters with the athletes and to profit from them even more than before. Henceforth, providing them with even more traits of an illegal cartel than many people...

...Two of the most popular ways would be to apply for grants or scholarships. These two options are the best to try because these do not need to be re-paid back. Applying for scholarships and grants are very easy and usually require you to write an essay stating why you feel you should get the scholarship. Another option is to use money from your savings account. The more money you put into your education, the less you will need to borrow toward your education cost. Because of my current financial situation, I thought that I had no choice but to borrow more than what I wanted to cover my education expenses. I had no money in my savings account and had a real hard time trying to find scholarship that I was qualified to apply for. I am still having troubles with that aspect to this date. It seems that most of the scholarships require you to have a GPA score which I have not acquired yet at this time. I did however managed to cut down a big chunk of my education costs by applying for a Pell grant for which I was approved. This has saved me a large amount of money that I will not have to pay back after I graduate. I intend to keep trying to get scholarships and using that scholarship money to pay off my student loans while I am attending school. The most important thing that we all need to keep in mind is that 6 months after we graduate, we will need to start paying off the loan. It is also important that we make sure that the payments are not delinquent or go into default...
