...professionals and the multitudes that read the Wall Street Journal. Big companies have sped up efforts in collecting money and at the same time have slowed down their payments to suppliers, vendors and money owed back to customers. Big firms are quick to collect and they are slow to pay (Serena). This concept must be understood as these big companies are fine tuning and sneakily finding ways to squeeze as much cash flow as possible out of operations and small businesses in which they use. An important statistic that came out of the article exposes the fact that companies with annual revenue in excess of more than $5 billion are collecting bills on the average of 41 days in 2009 down from 42 days in 2008. The same companies are taking 56 days to pay suppliers and creditors in 2009 which is up from 53 days in 2008 (Serena). This seems small, but it represents a 5% increase. For companies that are moving lots of money, this small percent means a big deal to them. On the other side, the companies making less than $500 million per year collected cash more slowly and paying bills more quickly during these time periods....

...Title of the Paper EFFECTIVENESS OF ASCI IN CONTROLLING ‘OBSCENE’ AND ‘MISLEADING’ ADVERTISEMENTS ON TELEVISION ABSTRACT The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) is a self regulatory voluntary organization of the advertising industry established in 1985. ASCI and its Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) deals with the complaints received from Consumers and Industry, against advertisements which are considered as False, Misleading, Indecent, Illegal, leading to Unsafe practices, or Unfair to competition, and consequently in contravention of the ASCI Code for Self-Regulation in Advertising. As the Indian market has grown, the role of advertising as an important and legitimate means for the seller to awaken interest in his products or services has gained currency. But the debate on where one draws the line is something the industry is grappling with. As a self-regulatory voluntary organization of the Indian advertising industry, ASCI have an important role to play, often with limited powers. In 2010, 777 complaints had been received against 190 ads, of which 104 were upheld. In this research paper, researcher will study how effectively ASCI and CCC are dealing with advertisements which are obscene and misleading in nature. What are the criteria for calling an advertisement obscene or misleading? What procedure they follow when they receive any complaint against any advertisement? How much time they generally take to work on any complaint received? How serious industry...

...Week 10 Case Study - Group J Catfish Creek Canoe Company Problem/Analysis: Issues From the case’s description of Steve Davidson’s plans and goals, he is trying to accomplish opening a canoe manufacturing shop that will produce 30 handcrafted, high-quality canoes per year; advertise with a Web site, magazine ads and press releases; and retail at a premium, yet at a competitive price which will maximize his profits. However, it is poorly mentioned how he plans on achieving some of these accomplishments. Using a Web site or the Internet to reach out to customers is a very effective and cost-efficient technique to promote the product, although Davidson might not have considered the costs associated with magazine ads that might not be worthwhile. Davidson also seems to not have made any analyses or decisions regarding his canoe pricing, only listing the criteria the pricing should meet. He should have a deeper understanding of factors such as costs, demand and competition. Has also mentioned that he has not yet calculated sales projections or breakeven points, which is something that certainly needs to be analyzed for this case. An additional issue that may have been overlooked is the ability for a recreation business such as a canoe shop to survive when exposed to a recessed economy. As mentioned in the case, it is not common for a canoe company to survive a recession due to the decreased need for recreational products. A good strategy for Davidson would be to prepare a plan...

...The Effects of Working Capital Management on Firm Profitability A study examining the impacts of different company characteristics Authors: Hampus Björkman & Micael Hillergren Supervisor: Lars Lindbergh Student Umeå School of Business and Economics Spring semester 2014 Degree project, 30 HP Abstract Many argue that there is a trade off between profitability and liquidity. However, many studies have found that the profitability can increase with an efficient Working Capital Management. Correctly allocating cash flows to where and when it is needed increases liquidity and simultaneously increasing profitability. The purpose of this study is to develop the research on the relationship between Working Capital Management and profitability by investigating how it is affected by different company characteristics. A quantitative method was applied with philosophical stances in objectivism and positivism and deductive theory was used to approach the subject. From the theoretical framework, five hypotheses were established and statistically tested in order to answer our research question. The first hypothesis was formulated to confirm previous research, while the remaining two aimed at providing both a theoretical and practical contribution to existing knowledge. The thesis centers on the Cash Conversion Cycle, a metric of how fast a company turns purchased products into profit, with Gross Profit Margin as the measure of profitability. The...

Considerations for Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies (CCCS)”, published in September 2013 in the aforementioned CCCS Journal. I knew immediately that I would enjoy reading this analysis of what I remember to be an incredibly strange media event and public relations explosion, a strange movement in which I did unfortunately partake. Jayson Harsin, the author of this article, carries with him years of experience from multiple universities, with a PhD in Communication from Northwestern University being his most recent degree. He currently sits as vice chair for the division on Philosophy, Theory, and Critique of the International Communication...
