...The book “Whale Done! The Power of Positive Relationships” authored by Ken Blanchard offers readers insight on how one’s interactions with people can make a dramatic change to a person’s life. Using the interactions of whales and their trainers as an example, the book offers methods and tips on how to turn negative situations into positive relationship building situations. The book offers these tips and methods through a simple story about a struggling manager. This simplistic story works well with the also simplistic manner in which the tips are given, along with the relative shortness of the book. Combining these elements together produces an easy and quick book for any interested reader, and an effective way of sharing the ideas of whale done. Throughout the book the struggling manager named Wes Kingsley learns about how to better manage relationships through the...

...Canaries of the Sea The white whales, or beluga, are residents of the arctic seas of the world. The common name is Russian, which comes from the adjective belii, meaning, “white”. Beluga whales have adapted to their life among sea ice, which is why they are all white in color and may grow up to eighteen feet in length (Haley, 1978). Belugas are gregarious and graceful and are enjoyed by everyone who meets them. Beluga whales are the only whales that can bend at the neck without moving their whole body. Different from other whales, they don’t have a dorsal fin but just a ridge on their back, which helps them trap the heat and stay warm in their icy Arctic surroundings. Belugas will migrate south to avoid getting trapped in the ice whenever the Arctic water freezes in the colder months. Belugas are mostly seen in large schools with a male leading the group. The schools may even get up to hundreds or thousands in numbers during migration (Tryckare, 1968)....

...recognizing that dolphins, orcas, and other cetaceans should not be in a tank. Orcas and dolphins are forced to swim in endless circles and perform painful tricks in a tiny tank. The tank is denying them from their natural habits (Aquariums and Marine Parks”). Animals belong in their natural environment not a tank or cage because they are restricted from behaving like they would in the wild. They are forced to do the same routine such as swimming in nonstop circles. They perform tricks that are painful for them especially since it is in a compact tank. Animals in captivity spend their whole lives in a confined space which does not allow them to live a natural life.Wild killer whales live in pods of two to fifty whales. They swim up to 100 miles in a day and dive to depths of 500 feet, which can not be done in a confined place like a tank. Usually they spend 10 to 20 percent at surface in the wild but being in a tank they spend up to 50 percent at surface (“Wild Animals in Entertainment”). Orcas can live for decades, but the orcas in captivity usually only live until they are 9. At least 44 orcas have died at U.S. Seaworld parks. The deaths range from severe trauma to intestinal gangrene. Never has one died of old age. More than 60 bottlenose dolphins including 16 stillborn babies have died at Seaworld in ten years (“Aquariums and Marine Parks”). Being in a confined space does not allow them to have a natural life and it is putting them at danger. Captive cetaceans cannot dive,...

...Spenser Steinman Black fish http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/problem-blackfish/ Summary-This article is a rebuttle to Blackfish’s thesis. It claims that Seaworld is actually not as villainous as Black fish makes them out to be, citing a statement seaworld made about how it rehabilitates animals, is a respected zoological foundation, and donates to conservation research. Despite this, even the writer of the article points out the easily disputable and vague statements which are cited in a message from seaworld to CNN to support the idea that Seaworld is not so terrible to it’s whales and humans. This makes for a weak rebuttle. Importance-This article is a terrible rebuttal. Characteristic of it’s failure is the fact that even the author of the article could not keep a straight train of thought to cement a solid counterargument. What this goes to show is that the counterargument truly is a weak one. Perhaps one of the only good points, presuming its true, that this article has to offer is the one to do with Sea World's monetary contributions to conservation. With Sea World going down the drains due to it’s poor orca practices it will obviously not be able to contribute to conservation, as it’s money is being drained in bad publicity and lawsuits. This will have some impact environmentally presuming that Sea World really was contributing in some meaningful way. http://www.indiewire.com/article/sundance-review-blackfish-ensures-youll-never-go-to-seaworld-again ...

...Much like crude oil today, whales were regarded as a valuable resource and were hunted the world over for their blubber and meat by people. The oil derived from their blubber was used to light homes and streets as well as manufacture soap, cosmetics and other everyday commodities. And as for their meat? A single catch of a large sperm whale could feed a small coastal village for weeks. Although demand for whale meat is ailing and advancements in technology have replaced whale oil with more effective and practical substances, whales are still being hunted and killed. Despite a ban on all commercial whaling certain nations still continue to kill these animals, primarily Japan, Norway and Iceland. The populations of these animals are becoming...

...this opinion. Captivity causes many health problems in marine mammals. Many tanks have water full of chemicals and bacteria; these results in blindness and many skin problems in dolphins and other marine mammals. Marine mammals in captivity die from pneumonia, ulcers and other stress related diseases. Most of these helpless creatures suffer from boredom. Dolphins in the wild can swim from 40-100 miles per day but in pools they go around swimming in repetitive patterns. Due to boredom and limited space many dolphins abuse themselves; they often bang their heads against tank and aquarium walls. Some of these poor innocent creatures face abusive treatment by their caretakers, thus shortening their lifespan. In fact Keiko, the killer whale, the star of Free Willy, was a victim of this type of abuse. Marine mammals breed very poorly in captivity with very high infant death rates. For this reason, when a baby dolphin is born into captivity its birth is usually kept a secret from its mother until it shows signs of survival. Marine mammals do breed in captivity, but the birth rate in captivity is not as successful as in the wild. Many people think that marine mammals should remain in captivity. I realize that some people may believe that captivity increases the life span of certain animals, but the truth is if these creatures are so happy in captivity, why do they die so fast? Those who work with captive animals in aquariums and zoos have a special obligation to convey knowledge...

...Working as a whale trainer at SeaWorld has become a dream job for almost any child who has witnessed the wonder of Shamu. The History of career field People have been training animals for thousands of years. Historically, falconers have trained hawks. Dogs have been trained for hunting, for herding livestock, and for pulling sleds. Elephants have been trained to pull or carry logs. Horses and camels have been trained for riding and hauling. Compared to other types of animal training, marine mammal training is a relatively new field. People have been training killer whales for only about the past 35 years. SeaWorld animal trainers began working with bottlenose dolphins in 1963 before the first park opened. Requirements Each year, hundreds of men and women apply for positions in SeaWorld's and Busch Gardens' Animal Training departments. The number of openings is generally limited to fewer than 10 hires per park each year. For SeaWorld, a college degree is not required to be eligible for an animal training position, but it is preferred. Applicants are expected to complete some college coursework in biology, marine biology, zoology, and animal behavior or psychology. Colorado Mountain College, Quinnipiac College, and University of Florida are among many listed and recommended by SeaWorld that offer Zoo research and management programs. Prior experience with large animals is preferred. Experience working with horses or birds, working on a farm, or volunteering at an...

...its ability to detect enemy submarines for decades. The Navy’s low-frequency sonar system has been a topic of controversy among environmental advocates for years. This system, known as Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System Low Frequency Active (SURTASS LAF) allows the Navy to detect enemy submarines with enough time to react and defend themselves. During the course of developing and testing the SURTASS LFA system, environmental interest groups raised concerns that the system may cause harm to marine mammals. Whales use sound for communication, navigation, orientation, and in locating food. This is known as echolocation. The Navy’s mid-frequency sonar can cause whales to dive deeper into the ocean, or rise quickly. Like humans, whales can get the bends from these types of underwater movements. The loud noises created by the Navy’s sonar system are believed to interrupt their ability to communicate, navigate and look for food. These disruptions are believed to harm the whales physically and cause state of panic which often leads to strandings and collisions (Drumm). Active sonar utilizes sound in order to find objects in the water. A pulse is sent through the water, and then reflects off an object. This is called an echo. The receiver will convert the echoes into electrical signals which are digitally displayed on board the vessel. The high tech computers will be able to extract information such as distance and direction of the object. A major draw back of active sonar is that...

...remember my dad telling me before bed I am sure there were others but these are the ones that had an memorable impression on me. These are my Pawley's Bedtime stories Allison and The Whale One sunny afternoon an little girl named Allison was fishing with her pop pop when she had a great big tug on her fishing line, her pop pop helped her reel in the line whatever was on the other end was putting up a fight after what seemed like hours a whale was up on the beach. The girls grandfather was joyous saying “we're having whale for dinner” and ran back to the house to fetch the girls father. Allison looked at the whale with delight when the wale spoke to her “please don't eat me for dinner” the whale said. When her grand father came back with Allison's dad, “the whale spoke again. “please don't eat me, if I could have your permission I would like to show Allison my home.” After deliberating the men agreed and Allison went into the ocean with the whale and they swam by the crabbie wabbies and visited with the fishie fishies, The whale and Allison had the time of their lives, the little girl didn't want to leave but the whale had made a promise and they returned from the ocean depths. Allison rode on the whales back all the way back to the beach, to her waiting grandfather and father, who instead of whale they had flounder for dinner instead. ???? Once upon a time their was a girl named Allison who loved the water she would spend hours on end out in the surf with her father when they...

...DOES MILITARY SONAR KILL WHALES? In this report I’m going to argue against the concerns that a dolphin and whales conservation group have produced, and I will support my argument with evidences to prove my choice. I’m also going to use couple of charts and data to back up my answers. A dolphin and whales conservation group have produced artificial report. For instance they wrote ‘whenever there is a military sonar exercises, up to 200 whales die as a result of sonar damage’, which was exaggerated, 200 whales and dolphins died just once and that was on Manila Bay, Philippines in 2009. When we look at the data we can see the average number of cetacean stranded is 28.2, and ranges from 1-200 The reason I put the second graph is because it said on my sheet to plot a bar chart of the number of deaths at the time of naval exercises on the axes (3. 1) – hope it makes sense The secondary source from table one has a limited analysis; they have missed out so many years such as 2001, 2007 and they doubled up the year 2008, and it is in various locations. The second statement ‘Whales and dolphins are being damaged all around the world by military sonar exercises’ needs to be shown by having more locations that show that places with no sonar activity have no stranding. They have not told us how many military sonar exercises there were in one year or how many stranding there are when there are no military sonar exercises. They have also not told us how big the sonar exercises were so...

...Writing an essay ( from information online ) Website :http://web.utah.edu/umed/students/clubs/international/presentations/dangers.html Sea Creatures That Are Harmful To Humans A lionfish in the deep ocean. Have you ever felt like you been bitten and afterward severely affected and poisoned? Because of poison or toxicity, some sea creatures are harmful to humans. Also, some sea creatures are deadly, but there are other ways to kill humans, other than Sea Creatures. But, there are warnings against Harmful Sea Creatures. Deadly Sea Creatures Deadly Sea Creatures are All around the ocean or a large body of water and, they defend themselves a lot against what they think is threats to them which might be innocent people. Taken from source 1 “ There are a number of hazardous creatures in the sea. Many can cause serious harm to unaware or inattentive divers “. Some Sea creatures have a huge defense system that might kill humans or other sea creatures ,According to passage 1, “ Some may even cause death, although this often depends on the amount of venom used, individual reactions, nature of injury and location of accidents (deep water victims often drown) “ . It really depends on the amount of venom or toxic used by the Sea Creature, Stated in passage 1 “ There are four major types of injury patterns from marine life “ .In conclusion in this paragraph, it is about Deadly Sea Creatures. Are they’re...

...Marine-mammal facilities are part of a billion-dollar industry built on the suffering of intelligent, social beings who are denied everything that is natural and important to them. Sadly, marine parks open their doors every summer to visitors who watch dolphins, beluga whales, and orcas perform their majestic tricks; they’re amazing, stunning, and very “enjoyable”… However, it might only seem fun to you, the marine animals who are performing the tricks themselves have to disagree, but, the question is, do you know the truth behind all this “joyful fun”? Marine animals in captivity is wrong. It needs to stop if it only means pain and abuse for our entertainments’ sake. I have many convincing reasons to support my opinion, including how captivity causes many health problems in marine mammals, these helpless creatures suffer from boredom, most of these poor innocent creatures face abusive treatment by their caretakers, thus shortening their life span by quite a lot, and marine mammals breed very poorly in captivity with very high infant death rates. So keep an open mind and choose to spend your money on family activities this summer that do not contribute to animal suffering. For starters, many wonder first where they all come from, or more importantly how they capture them. Dolphins are sometimes purposely injured by the capture teams to force the rest of their pod to stay behind into the trap, due to that dolphins never leave behind sick or injured friends or family members. But...

...Dolphin notes Wikipedia (various) They have well-developed hearing − their hearing, which is adapted for both air and water, is so well developed that some can survive even if they are blind Dolphins feed largely on fish and squid, but a few, like the killer whale, feed on large mammals, like seals. Male dolphins typically mate with multiple females every year, but females only mate every two to three years. Calves are typically born in the spring and summer months and females bear all the responsibility for raising them. Mothers of some species fast and nurse their young for a relatively long period of time. Dolphins produce a variety of vocalizations, usually in the form of clicks and whistles. Dolphins are descendants of land-dwelling mammals of the artiodactyl order (even-toed ungulates) J.G. Williams The primitive cetaceans, or archaeocetes, first took to the sea approximately 49 million years ago and became fully aquatic by 5–10 million years later.[22] WIKIPEDIA channeled vibrations from the jaw to the earbone which occurred with Ambulocetus 49 million years ago, a streamlining of the body and the growth of flukes on the tail which occurred around 43 million years ago with Protocetus, the migration of the nasal openings toward the top of the cranium and the modification of the forelimbs into flippers which occurred with Basilosaurus 35 million years ago, and the shrinking and eventual disappearance...
