...Money vs. True Value of Education Raeshelle Allen September 8,, 2012 As a child growing up doing well in school was never an option. The only this I had to do was go to school and make good grades. Now that I think about it school was my job and my paycheck was the knowledge I was gaining. This generation now-a-days have the idea that they should be rewarded finically for doing well. Students should not offered finical incentives to do well on standardize test in school. Schools should not give into to paying students for their performance. It is understood that in order to keep a school in good academic standings you have to make sure students do well on the standardized test. The test scores not only reflect the school but also represent each student as an individual. So you can see why it is important for students to do well but should that really mean at all cost. For many years teachers have been teaching the material for the long term knowledge now it seems as if they are just beginning to teach just for testing. There are some major disadvantages when trying to offer students financial incentives to do well on standardized test. Education should be viewed as a privilege. Many students take educations for granted. Not knowing that in some countries education is still not free let along for all males and females. You even have some certain types of schools here in the USA that you have to pay for high school education. I would think since students know that one day...

...to college they have to pay a sustainable amount to be able to do so. The cost of college has greatly increased in the past few decades. The high cost discourages minorities and poor students from attending college. Many students take out student loans to be able to afford college, but then struggle later in life with paying off those loans. Higher level jobs are beginning to require college education to even be considered and this can come troubling to those who are not able to afford college. In this essay I intend to explain the problems with the high costs of college, introduce a policy to fix the cost of college, and introduce the opposing side to my research. Congress should address the issue of the high cost of college because it is impacting our job market. A better educated society leads to a more educated nation, so it is in the best interest...

...the time we could be receiving the benefits that are included with Social Security. I chose this topic because while I am paying for Social Security of others, it is on the path to be out of money by around 2035, which will mean that people ages 18-25 will not be receiving this. We are paying for older generations’ Social Security money, but we will not be getting any. The topic of Social Security is important because of how much it is being overlooked. Awareness needs to be raised because the funds will not be able to provide us with our benefits when we need them years from now. By writing this paper I will be able to further explain what is happening with our money and why we are in such a crisis with it. Not everyone is aware of what the government is really doing with the money being put into this fund because they are not always honest. This information gathered will be helping everyone including the people paying now, the people paying later, and everyone that should be receiving these benefits now and later on in their life. The problem with Social Security will be affecting everyone throughout the United States by an estimated 2035. The problem is currently stemming from the government and their mismanaging of our money that we are putting into this fund. The mismanagement of the money is going to deplete the funds before I will be able to receive benefits, and it will also not be around for when my kids will need their money. All of the money we are paying in right...

...Compensation for Grades Coming home with stickers used to be satisfactory enough for children to do well in school; but now-a-days a pocket full of money seems to be the only reward. Inner city schools that have low- test scores use money as a way to boost test scores in order to receive the necessary funding. Paying for grades is manipulative, and contradicts the traditional method of learning, and also the resources the school systems are using come from the government and the resources are not there to pay the children. Therefore student should not be paid to their grades. Kids know they are being manipulated and lose interest in learning as soon as the rewards are withdrawn (Unknown). If students are only going to school for the money, they will eventually lose interest and find other ways to get the money. If teachers were doing their job well money would not be needed to motivate the children. There are workshops and other other that are offered to the teachers to keep the kids interested. If the methods that have been proven to work in other school around the state why would it not work in the inner city schools as well. Although teachers have notices a change in attitudes is the change for the better (Next). Parents are also manipulating the children for the benefit of the money. Parents who didn’t care if their student was coming home with a C are suddenly very interested when their children come home with a hundred dollars (Does). Children who live in poverty would...

...The streets are buzzing with students and families, and nothing but blue and gold tailgates for as far as the eye can see. This is also the case for every other college in the country. College football has become increasingly more popular over the past few years. It has even got to the point that players and coaches have raised the idea that players should be paid. This essay will focus mainly on collegiate football players and whether or not they should be payed. I used to play football in college and I, for one, do not think players should be paid. I believe that, if they were to pay players, the money should be used to benefit the their education in the form of scholarships. Also paying athletes will individualize the sports, much like how professional sports are now. Lastly, paying all athletes would cost far too much for the NCAA. Scholarships as Currency If college athletes were to be paid, it should be in the form of scholarships. From my own experience colleges have switched from the traditional four year scholarship, to one year grants. This is where the argument first stems from. A four year scholarship guarantees the athlete financial support throughout their four year stay at the institution. It covers all the basic finances of a college student such as tuition, fees, and room and board(Mitchell). On the other hand, one year grants can be revoked at anytime for numerous reasons, such as bad grades or injuries, to not living up to your coaches expectations...

...4 percent, however, as of July 1, 2013, the interest rates on Federal Stafford student loans will significantly increase from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent making it even more expensive for students to pay for college this fall. President Obama is working with Congress to keep the student loan interest rates down to 3.4 percent to keep it affordable for students (Lucas, 2012). So what is the problem? If Congress doubles the federal student loans interest rates, students will not be able to afford to pay for college. And college is sometimes not the only thing that students have to deal with. Student loans can put students with long-term burdens and stresses that in the future may affect their choice in jobs. Many students have to take care of other monthly bills like electricity, water, phone, rent, and possibly a mortgage. Nearly 10% of federal student loan borrowers failed to make a payment on their loans in 2010. Much of the increase came from for- profit colleges, 15% of borrowers failed to pay up from 11.6% two years earlier (Clemmitt 2011). There are many alternatives to this problem that we have. One alternative is to create a law to finance a $6 billion bill by raising social security and Medicare payroll taxes. Also put taxes on high- earning stock holders of privately owned...

...soccer or baseball; just that the marketability of college football or basketball appears to get the most attention from the institutions as well sports media. Obtaining a higher education leads to better-paying jobs and a potentially a better way of life. What about the urban student that lives in poverty that this may be his or her way to a better-living remains based on their athletic talents? They may be great at "hooping" or "can throw the distance" but can they write a term paper? The answer that may surprise most is the answer is yes; they can. However, they cannot afford to attend the local university in their home state let alone another state altogether. So, if they get into the university on a scholarship, play their heart out, and get their championship team to the bowl what do they get for all their hard work? Do all they deserve is a pat on the back when the college receives millions? What happens if they become injured on the field? What if the injury is life changing? What if the student-athlete decides they are not able to go pro? Does the university have their best interest? That is one of the most talked about a conversation in college sports today and felt by college athletes, university coaches and staff, parents and even the NCAA on what is appropriate. It is...

...traded company we have a responsibility to our shareholders to do everything within our power to reward them for investing in us. Investors have experienced so much volatility in domestic equity markets over the past twelve years that we need to make them very comfortable investing in Under Armour. We are still a very young organization compared to a “blue chip” companies like Johnson and Johnson or Proctor and Gamble. It is extremely difficult to gauge just how much investors expect on an annual return from us. Given all the circumstances that go in to making an investment decision for individuals I am going to use the Capital Asset Pricing Method to calculate what type of return we need to generate in order to make our shareholders feel like they made a wise investment. When trying to accurately value the stock of a company and expected returns there are three common methods of doing so. One method is the dividend growth model. This model tries to “value a company based on the theory that a stock is worth the discounted sum of all of its future dividend payments.” For some investors this could be a reasonable way to try to calculate what type of returns they could expect. With Under Armour, this would not help at all. Currently we do not pay any dividend. We use all the capital and cash we have in order to grow our business. There are numerous companies that entice investors because they pay a quarterly dividend from the revenue they generate. Because we are still a...

... Lee, we see many diverse viewpoints Thoreau may have had. One may see many influential experiences in Thoreau’s life—what motivated Thoreau what mattered and what didn’t to him. He believes in what he wants to believe and no one can change his mind. What Thoreau might be trying to tell the audience is they can stand up for themselves and there is equality between everyone. Through out the play Thoreau stands up for his rights. He gets extremely in depth and makes you think about what he’s really saying. He stands up for his rights, but doesn’t care if anyone agrees with him or even likes him, “…to be liked, you never disagree. And if you never disagree, it’s like only breathing in and never breathing out...” (13). Always trying for people to like you, one can almost feel suffocated. If you can’t make yourself happy it’s hard to stand up for yourself. People change themselves to be someone they aren’t just to be liked. Thoreau finds great disgust with going along with others. He expects everyone to “speak out” and not back down from what they believe (85). Thoreau doesn’t care if you’re the President or a beggar on the street. He believes everyone is equal. He believes we are all human, equally and wonderfully made, and no one is better than another. No one should be placed higher than another on the social scale, “I’m opposed to social distinctions…” (77). In society we all need to be our own person, but if we cannot all be equally powerful than we need to...

...Health Care Museum I. ATTENTION: Everyday, on the news, we always hear the US helping other nations fight for the liberty that they deserve. We see the US roaming the globe to feed the hungry. We see the US send out it's best doctors to attend the needy countries. America's mission towards other countries are very noble to be questioned, but what about the welfare of its own citizens? For years, the US is facing a medical emergency and as of today, the federal government hasn't enacted a long lasting and viable solution to the problem. There is no need to use medical or economic jargon to explain to an average American what the problem really is, as it is very evident. Individuals are paying more than the benefits that they receive. And to make the matter worse, the recession in the US economy is causing dramatic numbers of Americans be uninsured. The crisis affects greatly the unemployed and low-paid workers. The price of health insurance nowadays are just too high that it threatens to eat up even the everyday necessities of an average individual. As a matter of fact, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) the US health care system ranks 37th in the world behind Colombia and Portugal despite the fact that US health care system is the most expensive in the planet with expenses all drawn to administrative costs and advertising. Therefore, we are paying for a massive, inefficient. All of us are affected by this. No one is exempted. Effects may not be felt...

...students that would otherwise not attend their school. A 2009 court case brought this issue to light when a former college player sued the NCAA and EA Games for using his name in a video game and not paying royalties. The case is headed towards an NCAA payout, and many athletes are joining the plaintiff side as allowed by courts, as their names were used as well.1 Although this event may seem like justice for college athletes, it does not satisfy their right to be paid while attending school. There are many suggestions mentioned in an article by Time Magazine, but each includes contradictions and ethical problems that cannot be overlooked. From a philosophical perspective, compensating college athletes would be unethical and I think we can see this by examining the impact and a few theories. The article from Time Magazine is completely supportive of paying the students, and mentions that not every school would participate, only the 60 or so schools in the power conferences. Within those 60, only basketball and football would be paying players with the exception of schools to pay other sports or star players who have a great impact. 1 My fundamental problem with this kind of strategy is the lack of equality of all collegiate athletes. If you choose to pay these kids, how can we ethically only pay those who attend schools in certain conferences, or only pay players in specific sports? Also, how is it fair that a Division I school like Duke be allowed to pay basketball players...

...through the history of the American healthcare system, and allows us to see how we got to our current system. A few things we will be looking at what are some of the most disruptive problems in Americas system, hat other countries do that make their health care system work well, and what are some of the things that we can do to help make out health care system more available, and affordable to everyone. To start out our discussion on health care in America I think that we should start by looking where we stand in the world rankings of the most successful health care systems in terms of affordability, quality, and availability. We rank last out of the most developed countries in spending for insurance, yet we managed to visit our doctors less than any of the other highly developed countries. Over the past thirty years the medical industry has been leaning more towards the growth of administers instead of physicians. This means that the health care business is becoming more and more profit based. What this is saying to me is that even though we’re paying the most, we are not going to visit our physicians as much as other countries. Another factor that plays into where we fall behind to other countries is, how long we’re in a hospital for. On average we are in a hospital for less than a day for surgery’s that in some other countries people would be in the hospital for a couple of days. This is saying that we get people in and then get those same people out as fast as possible. Which...

...1. As you reflect back on this budgeting assignment, what are the most personally important facts or concepts you learned? I learned that if you take more units, a full-time student, you will be able to save more. You can have lower student loans and be able to finish much faster. As a student, we need to consider and take full advantage of the grants and scholarships that is eligible and available to us. This helps towards our goal in paying off our student loans. 2. How does what you learned or realized relate to or impact your personal, educational, and career goals? What I learned and realized that education is important. We can’t avoid not having student loans ,but we can try to use as much as grants and scholarship as we can. We also need to keep in mind that we need to learn how to budget ourselves because we don’t want to end up paying high amount of payment every month. We need to save up and use our money wisely for necessities and not material things. When we finish school, we can then apply for jobs that is well in pay and can afford our everyday living. 3. Do you feel prepared to enter student loan repayment and understand how to get started? So far, I’ve been saving up money and putting aside extra income I receive from my paycheck. This also includes any refund I receive from my school and will use it to repay for my student loans. I am aware of how much interest there is to pay for my student loans and I know that I can begin repaying after 6 months I graduate...

... Case What are the interests of the various players in the Varacil market? * CKC: Obtain the least costly ending for the lawsuit, considering the future effects of the outcome with respect to market share and future profits. * Tolemite: Obtain a payment of all past and future liabilities at the highest royalty possible, or the highest payment. * BARD: They would benefit from two situations: 1.CKC wining the trial, as they would not have to pay royalties anymore, which could decrease CKC’s cost competitive advantage if BARD decides to lower the price of the product. Thus they can become more competitive and may increase their market share this way. 2. CKC having to pay a royalty of 4% or more. The same logic as above applies. What should Mr. Purcell do? If you think he should propose a settlement, what amount do you recommend, and how should it be communicated? I believe Mr. Purcell should propose a settlement with Tolemite. The process started on 2005, and only in 2009 they are going to trial, which means 4 years of related costs, including time and monetary costs. Moreover, if they do go to trial, the process may continue, as appeals can be made if they win the case. This will mean more years with this problem in mind, and costly lawyers and advisors. By the time the trial is over, the patent will be close to expiring (2017), thus decreasing the importance of the trial itself. Regardless of the calculations made, paying 7.5% royalty...
