...One of the things that can prove that you existed in the first place is death for all lives are bound to die. Time is inevitable and each second that passes by is one step closer to death. Just the same, every moment we live is the reality and every moment that passes by becomes part of the forgettable past. We do not own time but on the contrary, time owns us. Schopenhauer would argue that life is pointless, a meaningless journey with one final end which is to cease to exist. What would then be the ultimate purpose of life if we will all die in the end? Everything that we invested will be gone and everything we have built will be worthless? I would like to argue that it is not necessarily the end that matters the most but the journey. Dying in the end should not mean that we have to live our lives miserably. I believe that death and factitious freedom are deeply intertwined with the thesis question "Why did Jesus die on the cross?" In this paper, we carefully examine not just the father-son relationship between Jesus and God but Jesus as both God-Man through the hypostatic union (As given in the thesis question) , its relationship to people and the very purpose of His and generally an individual's death vis-a-vis human freedom. It is very difficult to try to elaborate this issue that has been going on for years without being theological. There is a gap between theology and philosophy in such a way that theology's main ingredients are faith and belief and philosophy is sheer...

...We knew Rizal was our Philippine national hero but do you even wonder who Jose Rizal really is? Having this privilege to fully watch the documentary film about the life of a hero directed by Butch Nolasco made me think that it’s very rare to find such person who would give his own life knowing he have all those wealth and intelligence that others don’t have for the sake of his motherland and fellow citizens. If you would be dare to die for your country, will you have the courage to accept it given at this particular moment? That’s the question that surely most of us would decline, wouldn’t we? The documentary film of Jose Rizal shows his life starting from his young age up until the day he died. There featured all the information about his family, the schools and courses that Rizal entered and toke up, his travels across different nations, the particular people he had made friends with and those of his enemies as well, and of course his sacrifices he did for the success of the 2 novels that play an important role in the awakening of patriotism among Filipino patriots .It was also featured the women that Rizal had flings with. As I remembered Segunda Katigbak was Rizal’s First girlfriend while Leonor Rivera his cousin became his first love that lasted for 11 years until her parents arranged a wedding to Kipping. It’s a genuine frustration indeed for a person to be in that kind of situation. Despite Rizal is in the moment of great sorrow with how his relationship with...

...Does one who kills another deserve to die? Does One Who Kills Another Deserve to Die? “Don’t get mad, get even” It’s a common rule in a heartless society. But is it right? Thomas Hobbes stated that human beings are fearful of and hostile to one another, they resent the least detriment to themselves; to their bodies, their property, their liberty or opportunities, their pride or their reputation”. (Lisa H. Newton 2004 p. 59) Under certain circumstances there are reasons why one who kills another deserves to die and there are reasons why they don’t deserve to die. There are many different philosophic views on this topic. For example; a subject that brings much debate, should an insane person that kills be killed? Retributivists say that “since he did not know what he was doing, he did not intend the crime, does not deserve to be punished” (Lisa H. Newton 2004 pg. 61. Circumstances in which a killer would deserve to die | Circumstances in which a killer would not deserve to die | * Killing someone out of hate; simply saying I just want them to be dead * Jealousy; can’t control yourself so decide to murder. It can be attention seekers, wives, husbands etc. * Money * Breaking up, divorce; For example: John Barnes stabbed his wife because she broke off their engagement. * Rapists * Pedophiles * child murderers * serial killers * racism | * Standing up for his own country; army * Psychological issues * “Accidently” ex; hitting someone with a car, a sober...

...Early Jamestown: Why Did So Many Colonists Die? Suppose you have to live in an infested, uncommon, and to you an inhabitable land. You come with 100 other men, some dressed in cloth, some dressed in rages. How would the relationship be between you, the environment, unknown aliens, and your “companions?” The spring of 1607, three English ships with a hundred passengers came across the Atlantic, through the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and up the James River. Their intention was to create the first permanent English settlement in the “New World”, teach the ways of Jesus Christ to the Native peoples, find a trade route to China, and gather riches. Though only in the first few years of this “permanent” settlement, it started to parish. People...

...of history. One of the many things that can be learned and studied is the Dance of Death. The Dance of Death can give insight on what people were thinking and how they reacted when this was all these deaths were happening. During the Black Death, many people were being killed by this disease that many people did not know how to cure, but also controlling it. What many people started to do because of the fact they did not know how to go about the plague, they started to dance performances so hopefully it can ward off the big epidemic that is occurring. As stated in The Great Chronicle of France, “We have seen our neighbors die and are seeing them die day after day, but since the mortality has in no way entered out town, we are not without hope that our festive mood will not allow it to come here, and this is the reason for why we are dancing” (164). With that being said, you are able to see that they used dancing as an outlet, but also a way to not dwell so much on what is going with the so many deaths that are happening. However, things changed very much once there was a hail storm and many died because of it. Monks noticed that people were sad, which is expected once so many deaths are happening around them, not many people out there are able to cope with so much loss at a given time. With all this being said, everyone was able to die during the Black Death. There are those lucky few that had the chance to survive the plague, which were fortunate. However, death...

...Divorced, beheaded, survived. To die is the only thing we can be sure of, that everybody will. Everybody will die, and you cannot do anything to live forever. You can live long, and some can live longer than others, but we will all die, sooner or later. This short story is about a woman called Sarah. She looks back at her childhood. When Sarah was a child she lost her big brother, Terry. Now, later in Sarah’s life, she needs to go through another loss, but this time it is her son, who losses his friend, Peter. She sees herself very much in her third child....

...Question 1. Do you think what the EDS pilot did to Marilyn was what he ought to have done? Can you justify your position? What principles might you use to do so? What does Jan Narveson think about cases like Marilyn’s? Why does he think as he does? How many changes, and to what extent, would be the very minimum that would have to be made in Godwin’s story “Cold Equations” before you would think that Marilyn ought to be spared by the EDS pilot? Stephanie Mann 4778759 Phil 1F90 Maya Snrdic In the short story The Cold Equations, it depicts life’s real challenges, and how we must face them when in a decision of where we are obligated to figure out for ourselves what is right and wrong. Although this is a science-fictional story, it shows us how real life decisions are made, in which this case, the decision is threatening to one’s life. The choices made in this story are done through morality, utilitarianism, and assumption, clearly shown throughout the obstacles that are thrown at the main character and subject. In this short story, Marilyn made a choice, and clearly the last choice she could have made as a young 18 year old, to sneak onto a ship that was clearly marked “unauthorized personnel, keep out!” Little did she know was that her decision to sneak onto this ship would not be to pay a small fine, but would be to pay the price of her life. The EDS pilot now has to face decisions that he would rather not, since he is the one who has to choose who dies or not. He...

...Where'd it go? In 1585, a colony was funded by Queen Elizabeth I. This colony was named Roanoke, but is now what we know as Dare County, North Carolina. Roanoke was created to make a permanent settlement for the English in North America, or the “New World”. This town turned out to not be as permanent as the Queen had hoped. The colony disappeared during the Spanish war that was raging at the time. “The Lost Colony”, as it is called, went three years without supplies because of England being preoccupied with the war. It is still unknown when in that three year timespan they died off. The English did not give up at making a successful establishment in the New World. After several trials and errors, they finally had a thriving colony in the Americas. Many continued to die, but they did not die off. It was...

...situations in your life and allow them to die. We all go and are going through things that seems to hard for us to bear. There are many things that we have been praying for and we wonder Lord are you listening to me? Some of us been praying the same prayer so long that we feel like maybe this is one He just isn’t going to answer. I stop by to let you know that He hears every prayer and it is how you are dealing with the situation that is affecting the answer. Don’t you realize that He told us that we have the power to speak things into exsistance. Take not that on the 3 P’s. P= I have taught you in my word how to first Pray P= I have given you the Power to speak over your situation P= Then after you have pray and authorized your power to speak, then you have to learn to leave it alone and Praise for the result. Some of us don’t want our situations to die. We get all the attention as long as we are going through. If the Lord make a way for my bills to be paid, I can’t hit up the mission department no more. If he heal me, then the mothers want come over and cook and clean for me no more You don’t want your situation to die because that is the only way your lazy self have learned how to survive. Pamela Bone is a pro-euthanasia activist in addition to being an author. She like many others who support euthanasia ended her life by using drugs to allow her to have a peaceful, euthanasia death. Pamela was experiencing pain and prolonged suffering as a result of a brain tumor. Pamela ‘s death is quite similar to Lennie’s in Of Mice and Men. Like Pamela, Lennie was suffering greatly and was relieved of this suffering by their death. There was a plethora of hurt that lied ahead of Lennie. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George killing Lennie was a euthanasia act that was an attempt to protect him from...

...A Request to Die PHI200: Mind and Machine (GSI1116I) April 25, 2011 A Request to Die Susan M. Wolf (2008) wrote a very touching article (p.23-26) regarding the pain and suffering her father endured during his final days of battling with several sicknesses. Not only did she have to see her father in pain and getting weaker and weaker, she now had to deal with him verbally expressing the desire to let him die. The love she felt for her father was so strong that she wanted to grant him this final wish, but also wanted to ensure he would not suffer from this and be as comfortable as possible. Due to his health rapidly deteriorating and he was in more pain every day, she began to seek assistance from the many hospitals he sought care in to help end her father’s suffering. This will be a brief discussion of the issue of ethics regarding physician-assisted suicide, her final consensus to this matter being interpreted as a deontological view verses my own view being the utilitarian view. I would also like to state that I do agree with Susan Wolf’s attempts to locate hospital officials to try and let her father die as he wished, but I do not agree with her final decision that she is still against legalizing physician-assisted suicides. Susan M. Wolf did extensive research on the subject of physician-assisted suicides and her stance of being against the legalizing of it is very clear. While going through her own personal tragedy with her dying father, she was forced to rethink...
