This means she has to go to school and deal with everyday life like normal kids do. Despite her new environment, Cady found true friends in the person of Janice and Damien. They taught her everything that she needs to know about the school and the various kinds of students in their campus. ...What Does It Mean To Be Well-Educated? Greg Bonner Abstract To be well-educated mean more than the quality of the schools and colleges I attend. My education began with the sovereignty of God, the Creator. At birth my training and education began with my parents and care-givers. Throughout my life I was taught by those whom God had predestined for me as stewards, mentors and teachers. God created me in His image in every way. Divine wisdom, knowledge, and understanding are gifts inclusive of His image. I was and am increased in His knowledge through the nurturing and discipline of the Holy Spirit, our parents, teachers, and professors. To be well-educated expands further than the class rooms and curriculum of studies. My God given knowledge is released in “precept upon precept, and line upon line” in all that I do personally, academically, and otherwise (Isaiah 28:9-10 ESV). The best schools do not merit one to be well-educated. To be well-educated is forever learning, never ceasing to learn the knowledge of God in one’s self and others. What Does It Mean To Be Well-Educated? Reading Alfie Kohn’s article, “What Does it Mean to Be Well-Educated?” compelled me to answer the question. His article caused me to reflect and assess my own meaning of one being well-educated. My initial thought was that of academic and scholastic achievement. Being well-educated entails greater experiences than academic success. Life lessons, discipline, and...

...ENG3U1b 25 February 2013 The Genuine Meaning of Being Canadian What does it really mean to be Canadian? People have numerous statements to define themselves "Canadian". Many individuals would recognise themselves as Canadian citizens simply because they were born in Canada. In fact, it is sometimes the occasion that even people from different races may tell you that they are "just" or "100%" Canadian, when you ask their background. On the other hand, it is somewhat important to look at some general stereotypes of Canadians such as living in igloos (Eskimos), hating wars (i.e. peacekeeping), loving hockey, eating at Tim Horton's, wearing fur hats, and having "free" healthcare. Of course, most of these stereotypes are frivolous and fallacious while some others are tolerable merely to extent. Nonetheless, some people in different countries of the world, especially the U.S, apparently choose to think of them as the main characteristics of Canadian people. When it comes to peacekeeping, most Canadians would think of Lester B. Pearson's actions for Canada, like establishing the United Nation Emergency Force, for solving the Suez Crisis, and the Policy of Bilingualism in Canada. Pearson's eloquent speech illustrates the peacekeeping nature exists in Canadians, particularly when he declares "I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given to participate in that work as a representative of my country, Canada, whose people have, I think, shown their devotion to peace." I...

...What Does it Mean to be Well-Educated David Croucher Bachelor of Theology, Turabian Format Liberty University Online My definition of a good education has always been graduating high school and an accredited college with a degree until I read Kohn’s article. It is true that high school and collegiate work can further you in life, but good grades and a degree alone do not in itself equate to a good education. A good education is not defined by pure knowledge or place of learning but rather the type of information taught that can be used throughout life in a meaningful and resourceful manner. “For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life” (Proverbs 6:23, KJV). A good education is a conglomeration of many different things, so it cannot be just schooling. It cannot be defined only as excellent grades, seat time at school, memorization, or knowledge of useless information in preparing for life. A good education, in other words, cannot be defined as purely a formal education in itself. I am acquainted with people who are very intelligent and book smart, and have completed their collegiate time and degree, but still do not have the ability to utilize the information they have gleaned from various teachings in a classroom. Another false definition of a good education is just utilizing good common sense you may have been given. There must be a learning process involved in each situation to constitute an education. ...

...Discussion 2 1. What main argument (or claim) does the author make? What contradictions (if any) does the author make in her argument (or claim)? What competing claims (points of view other than the main one the author defends) appear in the essay? The main point the author makes is to not just pass students through school, make them earn it. The contradiction to her argument is that people blame outside influences, such as drugs and divorce for those in high school not academics seriously. I notice a theme of needed to hold people accountable. 2. What viewpoints may audience members have that oppose the author's main argument? What evidence is there that the author anticipates these opposing viewpoints that her audience members might hold? How does the author defend her argument against those opposing viewpoints? Young adults going through school should not have it held against them for outside influences that affect their academics. The author does anticipate these viewpoints and addresses them. She defends it by showing that after high school, the world is waiting for you, and that it does not cut you any slack because you run into issues that could affect your performance. 3. What assumptions does the writer's title carry? They are a teacher and should be well versed in the challenges facing students. Being a night school teacher also gives the assumption that they are very familiar with the aftermath for the student that is just passed along in school. They are also...

...published in March 1967 "Education for Self-Reliance" Julius Nyerere Since long before independence the people of this country, under the leadership of TANU, have been demanding more education for their children. But we have never really stopped to consider why we want education—what its purpose is. Therefore, although over time there have been various criticisms about the details of curricula provided in schools, we have not until now questioned the basic system of education which we took over at the time of, independence. We have never done that because we have never thought about education except in terms of obtaining teachers, engineers, administrators, etc. Individually and collectively we have in practice thought of education as a training for the skills required to earn high salaries in the modern sector of our economy. It is now time that we looked again at the justification for a poor society like ours spending almost 20 per cent of its Government revenues on providing education for its children and young people, and began to consider what that education should be doing. For in our circumstances it is impossible to devote Shs. 147,330,000/- every year to education for some of our children (while others go without) unless its result has a proportionate relevance, to the society we are trying to create. The educational systems in different kinds of societies in the world have been, and are, very different in organization and in content. They are different because the societies...

... The Need to Improve Communication through Diversity Skills As educators we hold a certain position in our community. Society holds us to a higher standard when it comes to our ability to be aware, adapt, accept, and understand the cultural diversity of the students and families, our co-workers, and volunteers we work with in our community. As our cultural demographics change in our community communication can become a challenge. If we cannot communicate effectively with those we work with we cannot do our jobs effectively. Demographic Changes The United States is changing faster than it ever has before. We can find more evidence of these demographic changes in our public schools more than anywhere else. Three changes that are, and will continue to become more notable in our public school system, is the rate in which immigration has grown, low income families are on the rise, and the natural population growth continues to increase, as quickly as the diversity of that population. Immigration Growth “Immigration have put the United States on a short road to a population diversity never before experienced by any nation—a population in which all races and ethnicities are part of minority groups that make up a complex whole.” (Center for Public Education 2012) As the CPE stated one reason many places in the United States is experiencing such demographic changes is due to the increase of immigration. A good portion of the population is not natural born citizens. With...

...Schools have always been the foundation of American society and teachers the masons. However, the motive of the educational system has been scrutinized since its inception. There are many theories, even today about its purpose. School rules, critical thinking skills, and everything else that schools facilitate and teachers teach are societal aspirations. These are the goals that are taught, in order to reach the underlying purpose. The purpose of the educational system is the same today as it was when our country was founded. It is political in its nature; it is to produce citizens that are capable of maintaining and participating in our democracy. From its inception, the American school system became a tool, a tool for our society's...

... 1 Prayer and the School Setting PHI 200 Instructor Lisa Linkin May 11, 2012 Prayer and the School Setting Many students throughout the world carry on their daily tasks of going to school. They come home or to their dorms from the excessive day of learning and they may say a prayer or they may not. For the ones that do say a prayer, they may feel as if the prayer would have been better said during school at the time of a “stressful situation or test”. This was not the case because prayer is being banned from school. This topic has been a very hot one from the time of the first person speaking out against having prayer in the school setting even until now showing no signs of letting up. Why is it so bothersome? It stands to reason that the reason prayer in the school setting is such a rampant subject is because those on both sides of the situation have very strong and valid arguments. Every time there seems to be a sound solution, there is something else that challenges the peace the solution seemingly creates. When it comes to the issue of prayer being appropriate for the school setting there are those that say that it is not appropriate, those that agree that it is, and those willing to look for solutions to pacify both sides. To even come close to beginning to identify whether prayer is appropriate for school or not one must understand exactly what both these terms mean in a general sense. School is defined as “place of instruction…discussion”...

Many people confuse this with just the lack of mental illness. One in five students experience a mental health problem during their school years (nasponline) and this may include anxiety, stress, bullying, depression, mental disability, family issues, and substance abuse (nasponline). This means that within a typical classroom of 20 children, 4 of them have the need for mental health therapy. 60% of them will not receive services because of social stigma...

...School plays an important role in our life. Many of us will spend more than fifteen years at school in order to get the qualifications that are required to work in a specific field. Of course, those years are broken down into several levels, some of them being more liked than others. Two important steps that we go through are high school and college. Even though some people would think they are almost similar, yet there are significant differences between them. The cost of high school education is not the same as the cost of college education. Also, some differences apply from an academic point of view. Typically, the social environment also differs from high school to college, a fact that can be related to the question of freedom versus responsibility. It is true to say that college is more expensive than high school. Of course, it provides a higher level of education, but by having such high fees it does not give a chance to them; coming from a family with a low income. Also, at college you have to buy your own books whereas in high school you borrow them from the school for a year. As they do for high schools, the government should pay for the books and then borrow them to students, as they do in high schools. Paying for the education you get is expensive, but many people have to pay even more. Many cities do not have colleges, so students who want to get a higher education have to move away to another city where they will be provided the education they need. This...

...Ricks-Armstead In exploring what it means to be educated one must take a closer look at how we seek and acquire knowledge beyond the traditional sense. If you take a closer look you will discover that there is an evolution of how knowledge has been shared and obtained throughout human history. And it is with this discovery that we will learn that acquisition of knowledge is not a “one-size-fits-all” process that has dominated most educational institutions in the recent decades. Being well educated does not always mean that you know everything all the time. If that was the case, we would all be perfect. I feel that everyone has a bit of ignorance in them. To define ignorance so no one will be offended; it is the lack of knowledge: lack of knowledge or education, unawareness: unawareness of something, often of something important. Synonyms are the state of unawareness, inexperience, illiteracy, unfamiliarity, obliviousness, witlessness. Now if you look at this, I don’t know how to fly a plane so therefore I am ignorant to that fact but it definitely does not mean that I am not well educated. Some people would argue the ignorant factor asuming that this is a way of calling them stupid. Like it says in the "What does it mean to be well educated story", the husband talks about how his wife is very knowledgable when it comes to medicine and anthropology; she freezes up when you ask her what eight times seven is. (Kohn, 2003). So does this make the wife ignorant? Or...

...highway to your computer. But what if this highway had a toll booth with three options; an extremely expensive ipass allowing rich websites to pass easily to your desktop, a normal priced toll with no ipass slowing down poorer sites, and the toll could turn away any website they like. Internet service providers are trying to push for this kind of internet, a money based internet where they don’t have to show any competitors websites at all. This doesn't sound like a good thing for the internet we know and love. In order to protect the fundamental principle that the internet was based on, and small web-based companies, net neutrality Must be protected and preserved. To understand why Net Neutrality must be preserved first you have to understand it, the economics of it, the arguments against the system, and the effect its change would have on small web-based companies. Net Neutrality can be defined very simply, that all websites are treated equally and distributed to the consumer or business equally. According to Tim wu, a professor at Columbia law School, he says on his personal website article Network Neutrality FAQ “The idea is that a maximally useful public information network aspires to treat all content, sites, and platforms equally.” What he is saying here is that basic concept of Net Neutrality is that no matter what provider, or platform (computer, tablet, or phone e.t.c) all content must be treated with equal delivery privileges. In other words, large companies can’t...
