...is real. Even though we cannot see God in person does that mean he is not real? There are some that does not have a belief in God even those there is no proof stating there is not a God. This does not mean that one should not listen to others then they try to tell you that there is not a God. But the best thing to do is listen to them and see what proof that they can show to state as to why they think that way. Then there are some that believes that there is a God but does not believe in all that is said that he had done. McCloskey stated in page 62 that, “Philosopher colleagues attribute to much importance to the role of the proofs of the existence of God as a basis for religious belief, that most theists does not come to believe in God as a result of reflecting on the proofs, but come to religion as a result of other reasons and factors.” (McCloskey, 1968) McCloskey used three arguments to support his claims; these three arguments are cosmological argument, teleological argument, and Argument from design. McCloskey had went on speaking about the cosmological argument and about the universe. McCloskey was more into the idea of a big bang. This can be broken down into three ideas from Evans and Manis on their non-temporal form of cosmological argument. The first one is the contingent beings meaning that there is a lot of evidence proving that a powerful being like God exists but there is no real reason as to why God or the universe does exists. The second one is that there are...

...In the 1966 film, Alfie, the character Alfie embodies different ideologies, which view the human person as “image of self” as opposed to “image of God.” The choices and actions Alfie makes and his relationships with others embody various ideologies, such as objectivism described by Ayn Rand. The standards Alfie live by, his moral code, treatment of other people, views on love and final self-reflection all include ideas from the Objectivism ideology, which views the person as “image of self.” For that reason, objectivism embodied by Alfie’s moral code and personal standard to live by can be contrasted to the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, which views the human person in the “image of God.” Alfie lives by a standard and moral code that coincide...

...apply this theory you must test both the motive behind the action as well as the universality to the action (The Kaplan eGuide to Ethics and the Legal Environment, 2013). To examine the scenario given for this assignment you must first identify the action. In this case the action being examined is whether or not it is ethical for one board member to use their board member status when dealing with personal business contacts. The first part of Kant’s theory states that a person’s motives must be pure. In this case the board member’s motive are not pure. They want to use the board’s good name to further his personal business connections. This motive is selfish as it only produces a positive effect for the board member’s personal business. This board member is not acting with a pure motive and therefore fails the first part of Kant’s theory. Next you must apply this action universally. What would happen if every board member was allowed to use the board’s name in dealing with personal business contacts? There would be no need to sign a document stating that they are not biased to one particular company. There would also be more conflicts that could arise between board members. When member are appointed to the board there is an understanding that they are not going to show favor to any specific company. Under Kant’s theory the...

...1 Sarah S. English 102 Dr. Bruce R. Magee Paper #2 Fiction THE LOTTERY Two days ago a person in Pennsylvania gunned down 12 people because he felt that he had been teased too much about not being about to speak English very well. We all say, "How can that happen?" Every person who commits a horrible act such as these always has an excuse. "I lost my job.", "I was being bullied.", "My wife was leaving me with the kids." Jackson's "The Lottery" is no different. No one in the story looked at the act. They looked at the reason they felt they had to do it. The reason becomes an excuse for the act. The story is a simple parable about a “thoughtless” tradition, selfishness, and pure evil that is justified by the good of the town. The first concept to address in "The Lottery" is that of tradition or ritual. Rituals, such as marriage rites or family traditions can be harmless, but when generations of people just keep doing something without ever asking why, tradition can become very evil. Every June 27th without fail the townspeople gather in the center of the city to have a lottery. They have forgotten why the box that holds the names of the citizens looks like it does or why one person is supposed to say this or that. They have "just always done it that way." The people never question if the lottery is fair, necessary, or just. The answer is always the same: we will keep doing it just as our ancestors did it. All the families get with their families and they stand in front of a bunch...

...Good Art Even though it might not seem like it, art is a very broad topic. When talking about art there are different categories. There is the art of literature, the art of music, the art of dance, the art of theater, and the art that we are most familiar with, such as drawings, paintings, and sculptures. If a person’s writing is good enough, then their work is published in a newspaper, as a book, or in a magazine. If a person makes good music then they can join an orchestra, join a band, or make records. When a person is good in theater then they are able to direct shows or movies, or act on Broadway or in Hollywood movies. A person who can create good art, if good enough, can be shown in a gallery, art show, or museum. The complicated question always comes up of how do you know the work of art is good? To decide whether a work of art is good we can ask a few questions such as, is the art popular in society, does it have emotional power, or has it passed the test of time? Even when asking these questions, deciding whether a work of art is good or not is still an opinion and opinions can always change. After time passes by it is much easier to decide if a work of art is good. Does the work of art stand the test of time? Artist such as Mozart and Van Gogh did not get their fame until after their death. Even now years after they are gone their works of art are still alive and admired by people. The paintings of Van Gogh and the music of Mozart did not change once they died. ...

...“A Good Man is Hard to Find” How old does one need to be to die and how old is too old to profess one’s faith and receive salvation? What does it take to have salvation and eternal life and how does one show that in a work of literature? In the process of all of the chronological references and religious symbolism, Flannery O’Connor in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” addresses this and draws a parallel to the modern moral dilemma of what it takes to be saved. Written in 1953 and based upon her Roman Catholicism roots, O’Connor conveys how each family member gracefully accepts the previous generation’s quirkiness and cynicism to maintain family unit. Although the younger generations do not respect older ones as much as their parents, her stories have characters that convey her message of religious distrust through each character’s deceptive actions and secular thoughts. Similarly, most of O’Connor’s stories make reference to the good and bad by such subtleness as creatively naming the kids after an outlaw and a founder of a major religion. By such obscurity, she wants to draw a parallel between the true believer and the hypocrites that appear to be religious in actions (May). Like a mirror’s reflection, O’Connor’s story contains several undertones of grace in how the characters are developed in the story. From the grandmother to the Misfit, there is a “forewarning of mortal death in the story as the family travels on their last trip before meeting the Misfit that carries...

...ASIGNMENT REPORT How to be a good manager Student Sunny 05/01/2013 I’ve known that good managers’ attributes that are useful are that they are always on top of what happens in the office. They make sure that the whole office runs efficiently by keeping an organized office. It is very important to be organized and to love what you do in order to make sure that the office is taken care of to the best of their ability. That is a reason why I’m interested in how to be a good manager. Firstly, a manager needs thirty skills to be successed: Communication, Listening skills, commitment for a truth, empathy, persuasion, leadership, focus, division of work, obstacle removal, heat absorption, uncertainty removal, project management, and administrative and Financial Skills. Communication, listening skills, and commitment for a truth are the most significant for a manager. Now, I would like to focus on communication first. There’s a lot of communication when you’re a manager. You have to communicate with each of your employees. You have to communicate “sideways” with your co-workers and customers. And you have to communicate upwards with your own manager or executive. You need some substance in the communication, of course — you need to have something worthy of being communicated. But substance isn’t enough — if you know what you’re doing and can’t properly communicate it to anyone else, then you’ll never be a good manager. Secondly is listening skills. This is a part of communication...

...something that people look forward to, but is it bad for us? What is it about death that strikes fear into the hearts of millions of people across the world? In this paper, I will aim to answer those questions. Is death bad for us? If yes, why? If death is bad for us, what implications does this have about the rights and wrongs of killing people? I believe that death is in fact bad for us, and I will argue my case in the following paragraphs. Perhaps the greatest reason that people fear death is simply because they do not want to die. However, just because a person does not want something, that does not make it bad for them. For example, a person may dislike vegetables and not want to eat them but that does not make vegetables...

...solely on the consequences it produces. People possessing utilitarian views believe that a person’s actions should be chosen to maximize utility for the greater good of all people. In the article “Against Utilitarianism,” British philosopher Bernard Williams aims to discredit the validity of the utilitarian argument. He supports his argument through examples of moral dilemmas and working definitions of utilitarian terms. Although Williams presents a compelling case against utilitarianism, such a prominent theory in philosophy cannot be reproached so quickly. Utilitarianism enhances overall happiness and utility without disparaging individual integrity. The concepts making up utilitarianism are extensive, however two of the most fundamental concepts include negative responsibility and integrity. Negative responsibility is the belief that a person is as responsible for the consequences of an action that they failed to prevent as they are for the actions they carry out. The idea of negative responsibility is directly related to utilitarianism because it deals with the concept that a person is responsible for consequences brought about by their being. This includes a person’s lack of action which, in itself, is considered an action to a utilitarian. Based on negative responsibility in accordance with utilitarianism, a person should act, or not act, to increase utility. Integrity, or one’s personal moral uprightness and beliefs, is also an essential component in this theory. In Williams’...

...Definition of a Good Parent Raising a child is not an easy task; and, not every person that has a child is equipped with what it takes to be a good parent. Each person has their own opinion of the definition of good parenting; however, there are a few basic, fundamental suggestions that some may want to consider when faced with child rearing. First and most importantly, a good parent should show love and affection toward their child or children. Secondly, it is also essential that a parent be able to set good examples for their children. Lastly, in order to be an effective parent, a person must learn how to take a break for themselves once in a while. A good parent shows love, is a good role model, and takes cares of their wellbeing. Love and affection is the foundation of a healthy relationship between a parent and their child. This suggestion applies to all parents, it does not matter how old they are, what color they are, where they are from, or if they are male or female. Taking care of a child’s basic necessities and keeping the child safe from harm is, without a doubt, part of the love and affection equation. Love and affection provides a sense of security and worth in a developing child. Being a good role model is also crucial when nurturing a growing human being. A good parent should remember that their actions speak louder than their words. A parent should set high standards for themselves and treat other people the way they would like to be treated. Being honest...

An elderly person (60s+).Paper should be approx. 7 pages. Spend about an hour questioning each person. Take notes or tape your interviews. HOWEVER, MAKE SURE EACH PARTICIPANT WOULD FEEL COMFORTABLE BEING TAPED. Begin by describing the purpose of the interview: "I want to find out what being an X year old is like. What are your concerns at this time of life? What is important to you at this age? What are the good and bad points about your time of life? This interview is for my term paper in developmental psychology. Anything you tell me will be confidential. I will not use your name. ...to know what type of person one is when it comes to making ethical decisions. Ethics is a difficult area of business and one’s life. The reason is each person finds what it ethically acceptable somewhat different. Recently for college, I was required to take an inventory of what I deem to be ethical. This paper will explain what type of ethical decision maker I am, and address three problems that I may run into in the workplace because of the way I make my decisions. According to the Williams Institute (2006), I base most of my decisions based on character of the person. Does this person make ethical decisions normally, and does this person usually conduct his self or her self ethically? This is not seen as a character flaw, but alone will not produce the most positive result. Other factors have to be calculated into the equation of making ethical decisions. For example, people affected positively compared to the number of people affected negatively along with determining if the decision is the right thing to do will also affect the decision. For purposes of this assignment I will make decisions based on the character of the person and address the problems that will arise because of that fact. One problem I will run into in my place of work will be someone I hold in high regard because of his or her character will fall behind in his or her job. Just because this person is of good character my judgment will be clouded. The question is; can I do what needs...

...Personal Responsibility in Our World Today Whereas some may argue that personal responsibility does not equal maturity or productivity, personal responsibility is very important because it defines an individual as a mature, productive person who takes responsibility for his or her actions and the impact these actions will have on his or her society. What is it to be responsible? Garrath Wiliams defines responsibility as this: “The responsible person can be relied on to judge and to act in certain morally desirable ways; in the case of more demanding (“more responsible”) roles, the person can be trusted to exercise initiative and to demonstrate commitment; and when things go wrong, such a person will be prepared to take responsibility for dealing with things. One way of putting this might be to say that the responsible person can be counted on take her responsibilities seriously. “What is it to be responsible?” The philosophical literature has explored three broad approaches to this question: 1. Human beings have free will, that is, distinctive causal powers or a special metaphysical status that separate them from everything else in the universe. 2. Human beings can act on the basis of reason(s). 3. Human beings have a certain set of moral or proto-moral feelings” (Williams, 2006 Section 2d, Para 2, Section 2a, Para 2, ) A responsible person realizes that they have choices to make and will use his or her reasoning and moral values to make these...
