...I like things that I can control. Watching someone read something you wrote is nerve racking; you don’t know what they are thinking. In life, we are forced to do things we are uncomfortable with. When I am pushed, and actually accomplish the goal that was thrown into my hands, it is more rewarding in the end. Writing is a weakness of mine, in my opinion. I’m afraid to share what I think sometimes, especially when it’s in writing: that means it is real. Once your pen hits the paper, it will be there forever… until you throw it away, delete it, or keep it out of mind. That is hard to do. But it is harder to control your thoughts when they are brewing up and exploding with emotion. Writing gives us a way of sharing. Without it, how could we communicate...

...What does persuasive writing mean to me? It means that I cam going to try and convince my readers that my opinion is all that matters. I am going to do everything I can to persuade the reader that what I am writing is gospel. No other opinion matters but mine. I believe that a good persuasive paper should present the facts first. The writer must do his/her research before they can even present their opinion on the subject. Being knowledgeable of the topic that you are going to discuss is going to have your readers very interested because they can always, after reading your writing, always research the topic on their own. When wring a persuasive piece, I would determine who my audience is going to be. This way you would know how to formulate your paper and all of your persuasion could appeal to your specific audience. Determine if your audience is male, female, working people or people who are not working. These are just some examples I could use, depending on what my topic is. If your topic is about public schools and their money crisis, you could decide if your target audience is going to be teachers, parent or even students. I think that persuasive writing is going to be my favorite because I always have an opinion about something. This particular writing requires you to really think about where you stand on any particular subject whether you think your opinion is big or small. I think that in trying to convince a certain type of group to go along with your opinion...

...There are many similarities and differences between writing skills in the book Exploring Language. By examining some of the authors in the book, Linda Flowers and Anne Lamott are the authors that connected best with improving my writing skills. Anne Lamott a graduate from Drew School, tells all her new students on the first day of a workshop that good writing is about telling the truth. Telling the truth in an interesting way is not as easy as it seems. Most lose faith. Their sense of self and story shatters in crumbles to the ground. Commonly her students will show up for the first day of the workshop looking like bright ducklings who will follow her anywhere, but by the time the second class rolls around, they look at her as if the relationship is definitely off (Lamott 95). Lamott tips on writing what is real will help me stay focused on writing about my own true stories, because the work won’t have be made up. You don’t have to keep digging and digging trying to make your fake story real, real stories sometimes may sound fake but they real and more interesting then your fake stories. My senior year of high school my English Teacher gave the class a writing assignment to write about a true story in your life. I wanted my story to sound the best, so I made my story up. The story was about a ghost encounter in Colorado, it...

...Motivation means to have a drive, a passion, and a desire in order to accomplish an interest. In today’s society being motivated is the top key factor in a person’s life. Motivation gives strength to an individual to push through any obstacle he/she may face during an occurring event. Without having any type of motivation a person will be very discouraged and will not attempt to fulfill any goals they set for themselves. To attend college a student has to be highly motivated especially dealing with heavy loads of assignments that he/she has to face in order to complete a class to graduate and be successful in the future. For example, a student can set up a success plan such as academic goals to ensure having a certain G.P.A and maintaining it throughout the school year. By doing this he/she has to be motivated to get good grades in assignments, quizzes, and tests. As for me, becoming a better writer means to have my point clear enough so that a reader can comprehend what is written. In order for me to become a better writer motivation is important in order to improve my weaknesses. My main weaknesses in writing are making sure my sentence structure is correct and putting my thoughts together so that they flow. Having motivation to improve will help me look at my sentences and take a step back so that I can make sure they are right. Also, so I can see where my mistakes are being made. It will also help me to do brainstorming exercise when writing papers so that I can make sure...

...problems in my writing that needed to be fixed. These four months in this class have helped me solve many writing challenges. I am far from perfect in becoming a good writer but I have learned that hard work and perseverance can produce wonderful results. Even though I learned many things, the three man points that I want to talk about are the following: quote analysis scaffold, grammar, and research online. The first month of the English 0890 class was intense, the students had to do a special analysis writing exercise called “Quote analysis scaffold”. It is the developing of many skills in one exercise. It helps develop reading and vocabulary comprehension. After the quote analysis scaffold is made, it can be used in the essay as a hook or concluding thought. We ended up doing around ten of these exercises. After writing the quote, provided from the teacher, this analysis was made from the following steps: The first thing was to do a research online about the author and make two to three sentences, on average, about who he was and what were his major contributions to society. Second, the students had to look for unknown words and their definition in the dictionary. After this, the third part was for the students to find the definition using their own words, to show that they understand the basic meaning of the words. Fourth, it was necessary to paraphrase the quote to demonstrate the understanding of its meaning. As a final and fifth step, it was needed to explain what the quote...

...and forgotten people. They all face a new struggle, a struggle to find their identity. "Identity- who we are, where we come from, what we are- is difficult to maintain in exile. Most other people take their identity for granted. Not the Palestinian, who is required to show proofs of identity more or less constantly." (Page 546) Said, being Palestinian himself, tells us this story in what was called a "hybrid" type of writing. He does this by letting the pictures take precedence in telling his story but then describes each picture by going back and forth from a history point of view, to his own recollections of his childhood. The way he describes each picture makes you feel as if you were at one time in that picture and can feel an emotional connection to it. Through each photo, we get a really sense of what it is like to be Palestinian, to have it all taken away and how they started new. The way Said puts the story together without any time frame, is an example of why his writing style was described as a hybrid. He will start with describing a picture by telling us facts about his country and then interrupt himself, like he's actually have a conversation with the reader and tell us a memory, or how that particular photo makes him feel. By writing like this, he makes the reader able to feel comfortable enough and be able to really relate to what Said feels and thinks. It's almost as if he chose all of the photographs first, photographs that really portray his country, and write...

...to creating an acceptable paper. I have a negative outlook on my writing, I write a lot of cliche things, fragment sentences are my weakness, my vocabulary is poor, and I over think what is wanted from what I write. Struggling with this introduction, for instance, is one of my major weaknesses. A lot more work goes into it than there seems. I have to think “Did I capture the attention? Does my audience know where I’m going with this paper? Is it enough to make them curious to read more?” In the beginning of the semester, my introduction basically went straight into the paper like it was the first body paragraph. It was a confusing surprise. I’ve since worked on my introductions so they give more explanation toward the overall reason for the paper. Even if it’s not the best you’ve ever read, I’m more aware of why it’s not and that there are ways to strengthen it. I’d like to believe because of how self-aware I...

...What is success? Is it the process of doing a task and receiving a positive result acceptable amongst the community, or is it simply achieving ones own personal goals? Success to me can mean many things. Although I am successful in school, that does not necessarily mean I will lead a successful life. Success to me is setting personal goals, and following through with them. Whether you achieve your desired result or not, you have succeeded just by trying. Everyone’s vision of success differs. Success takes many different definitions. People have different interpretations of what success really means. For me is as simple as: living well and laughing often. The idea of living well is a very broad statement. Living well, in my opinion is getting success in personal, social and professional life. If I can achieve all of these three levels of success, I believe that I have lived well. Personal success for me is being able enjoy little things that life has to offer. For instance; understanding and appreciating diversity. To have someone to love and treasure, to meet the right person, fall in love, and get marry. To feel that I’m able to love my child and pass on wisdom to him .Feeling that someone loves me, is something that makes me completely happy and successful. Because I believe that without love, life is not thoroughly complete, thus never truly achieve success. I believe that, by being mentally and physically healthy, I have achieved personal success. When I get...

...VARK Analysis Is there more than one way to learn? Is there more than one way to teach? Does everybody retain information the same way? These are all question that I never really put much thought into until taking the VARK questionnaire. I will refer to myself as Study A throughout this essay. After taking the VARK quiz, Study A realized that she has a multimodal learning preference. What does that mean? That means that she learns in many different ways and forms. Study A received the highest score in Kinesthetic form of learning followed by Aural, Reading and writing and visual forms of learning. Study A is enlightened to be more aware of her own study habits and also aware that everybody learns differently. The objective of my essay is to discuss “Study A’s” learning style, learning strategies, and how awareness of these different learning approaches should aid teachers and learners. Multimodal learning means the more different ways you learn something, the more you will learn it, understand it and remember it. Study A learns best when different teaching approaches are given to her. She needs to apply kinesthetic ways of teaching meaning she needs to have senses, practical exercises, examples, cases, and trial and error. Study A also needs Aural ways of teaching meaning she needs listening, discussing, talking, questioning, recalling. Study A also use reading and writing as a way of learning meaning she needs lists, notes and text in all its formats and whether in...

...“The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” How does this Sherman Alexie essay compare to the Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X essays we read earlier in the semester? What implications does Alexie invoke with his use of the Superman imagery? In comparing the three essays, “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, to “Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass and “Learning to Read” by Malcolm X, one immediately recognizes that all three authors place high importance on the value of reading and writing. When one has the ability to read and write, one has the ability to achieve many goals. One also has the ability to make a difference in the lives of others and society. In “Learning to Read” by Frederick...

...What does the term literature mean to me? To me, literature is used as a type of healing. Literature is a collection of writings. Literature may be factual, gathered to educate and support further learning. It may be fictional, providing expression to the creativity of the author and allowing the reader personal interpretation to the recorded words. It also may be presented in forms of, novel to poems to short story to plays. It is an opportunity for me to enrich my life by sharing in thoughts and wisdom of others. What makes something literary in my own mind? What makes something literary in my mind, is any material providing fact and as far as any book it needs to hold my interest and be able to make me involved in the characters in the story. Our text asserts that there are six areas that literature contributes to our lives: Restoration, of the past, simulation of imagination, glorification of a common place, perturbation of emotion, upholding of a vision, and observation of human nature (Clugston, 2014). If literature means different things to different people, who defines what is and what is not literature? I believe the individual defines what is and what is not literature. Everybody has their own opinion on what is good and what is not good. What kind of reading engages/interests me? What about that writing draws me in? Do I find meaning in reading certain writing? If so, describe the satisfaction drawn from the process. How do I read? I have always liked...

...Looking back at this fantastic journey, I cannot help but think that this class and its assignments have been important tools for improving not only my writing skills but also –and especially—my thinking skills. This class taught me a method for thinking and writing. While looking at the critical research reflection I cannot help but think of the word “reflect? “Since the beginning of this class, I had to reflect on course texts, reflect on the sources, reflect on personal experience, and reflect on peer reviews and discussion posts. Dr. ND asked me to reflect on my writing and to think carefully, especially before making a decision or reaching a conclusion. Why the word "reflect" is so important? What does it mean, "to reflect”? The philosopher Locke said that the act of reflection is characterized by mental acts of doubt, believe, think, have emotions, and feelings (Locke). I believe that my final research paper is an essay that has all the characteristics described by Locke. The final project includes feelings, personal experience, thoughts, doubts, questions, answers, and reasoning....

As a writer, I do not want to write about anything that does not hold meaning to me. I work to make meaning out of every task and assignment. I make revisions based on the way the pieces flow. If the pieces do not have a common theme or emotion, I revise them, or cut them completely. I know that in the first piece, the self-portrait, I wanted to incorporate a lot of aspects of me. However, not all made sense to include, and not all would fit. So I divided up my pieces into two distinct...
