What do you look forward to, as you begin this educational experience and your personal search for purpose? What is your greatest fear? How can you overcome it? Write about one specific educational experience from your past where you addressed a fear and overcame it and how you succeeded in this process. I’m looking forward to the actual school work. It is a double edged sword thought because I am not computer smart and I do not have experience in writing papers either. I have been out of school for over fifteen years and my big fear is that I won’t make the grades. I have setup a support systems from fellow nurses who have already succeeded taking online classes to my husband who is in charge of keeping my computer working smoothly. I am the first person in my family to pursue a college degree. My biggest fear was if I was smart enough for college. When I first started I took classes to meet my humanities requirements. I took a class called Good Books not knowing the instructor had recently discovered his Native American roots. Thus all five books he chose for us to read that semester were related to the struggles and accomplishments of the Native American people. Now I was very upset thinking what on earth could reading these books do for me personally or professionally, I felt I was wasting my time and money. I thought if college was about taking classes that did not mean anything to me then maybe college was not where I needed to be. Now twenty six years later I remember that class as the turning point in my college career. That instructor brought so much insight into his lectures I was glued to my seat every class to see if I was able to pick out the same message in the reading as he did. I learned in his class about empathy, hope, respect, relationships, patients, love, kindness and much more. To this day I think about those lessens often. They help me to be more understanding when communicating with my patients from every walk of life. My fear of not being smart enough for college was forever resolved after that one class. I give my good books teacher credit for helping me overcome my fear of college by being a great communicator by helping me succeed in college and life.

...GPA. Since my last academic experience, I have grown not only in maturity but also in the goals I want to obtain. As a result, I am ready to put in the extra work and go the extra mile. I am no longer a young adult, struggling with learning about myself and my future. I am a mature, grown woman who knows what she wants and won’t give up. I will be successful at Walden if admitted because failure is not an option for me. I now understand the processes I have to go through in college and if I don’t understand something, I will ask questions. I am more reflective today than I was as a young adult and more goal-oriented for the future. Personal/Professional Growth I am interested in graduate school because I want to continue my career on professional level for school psychology. Since receiving a degree in my undergraduate study, I have worked with the Wayne County Public Schools as a substitute teacher and teacher assistant. I found myself becoming more drawn towards ensuring that my students receive a good education. While dealing with a diverse group of students, I encounter a lot of social behavior issues. These social behavior issues start at such a young age and it can hinder lifetime decisions. As a result, I want to work with these children and help them overcome these obstacles. My goal is to make a difference in the lives of others. I recognize that education is the key to success in these students but I also recognize that many students are struggling...

...them. People are leading busy lives and looking to get more done and if they can find ways to help them make it easier then they will try it. Taking college courses online is a very convenient option people have and more people sign up for the classes every year. An article written by Zephry Teachout Will the Web Kill Colleges? questions the online learning and looks into the future it. “This year may be part of the last generation for which going to college means packing up, getting a dorm room and listening to tenured professors.” Teachout (2009) More of the brick and mortar schools may be affected more than the Ivy League schools because they do not have the funding and image to compete with such schools as Harvard. The small colleges rely on tuition and if more students are attending online classes their enrollment will be down and their funding will not be there. This alone could be very detrimental to them. This would cause many colleges to either close, or join with other universities that are growing quickly in the online community. Another argument that Teachout has is that with the online classes becoming more popular the market will become saturated with classes popping up all over internet. Having to pay tenured professors a particular salary is something they consider when they review the budget. If the online classes continue to grow at the rate they are now, more classes will be taught be professors at a lower rate because the overhead cost would be considerably...

Intro to Discussion Board Business 105

...Introduction To The Discussion Board Jay Smith A STUDENTS INTRODUCTION TO THE DISCUSSION BOARD 2 Abstract I would like to introduce myself, my name is Jay Smith, I live in Titusville, Florida where I manage the apartment building in which I reside. I am married now 3 years, have no children – just a fur face Manchester terrier named Louiee. My previous educational background consist of one semester at Daytona State College in 2001, as a Business Major. I have found that sometimes in live – one’s world can change in an instant and the course of the live that you had planned – suddenly changes. And looking back I believe this is what happened to me, as after one semester I chose to drop out and become involved in the local Daytona Area Music and Club scene. The results: A failed musician and a bloody nasty drinking habit. In 2004 I entered Savannah’s Hospital and completed the 28 day program. Since then I have 8 years without a drink. Woot! I love to share my experience, strength and hope with the newcomers, as I have stayed very active in the A.A. program, and most recently I have begun to teach the local Step Study Meetings for the “Celebrate Recovery” group here in town. “Celebrate Recovery” would be considered the Christian based A.A. program, with literature from author Rick Warren, (writer of “The Purpose Driven Life”) What I’ve found is a wonderful life beyond my dreams – and most days it is a joy to be alive! And when it’s not – every...

...different ways that I can be successful throughout my journey with Distant Learning. I have chosen this route because dedicating my time to a nearby college means taking away from my children’s needs. There are many people out there that don’t take the time to teach their children the basics but my almost three year knows her ABC’s, numbers to twenty, a variety of animals and can write some letters. I feel that these past nine weeks have taught me to stay motivated so I can complete my degree. It has taken some time to adapt to taking classes online but it’s always good to challenge yourself with something new. Attending classes anytime during the day seven days a week along with help from my graduation team is going to help me achieve my goals. There are advantages and disadvantages to distant learning, but what makes it so manageable is not being afraid to ask for help when needed. I can contact my instructor whether it’d be through email or picking up the telephone. One disadvantage is for the students who are used to being in a classroom setting, learning best by seeing and hearing the instructor. It may take a little while longer for these students to adapt. I feel that being able to review feedback and assignments that have been posted has been really helpful throughout these past weeks, along with discussions with the other students. Being able to discuss with other students whether in the chat room off topic or in the classroom makes it easier because I can see other...

Why College Education Is Important to Me

...“Why college education is important to me” In today’s workforce, a college education has become essential. One needs to be educated in order to be successful in their career choice. The importance of education needs to be expressed to our children and led by example. Goals need to be put into place. A college education won’t only bring me a degree; it will help me to be able to grow and prosper, not only financially, but integrally, and show my children that all things are possible. Therefore, it is highly important for me to further my education beyond a high school diploma. In order to succeed in today’s competitive workforce, I will need to continually educate myself. Sociallogical Perspective

...Miller-Motte College Online I have always been fascinated by people. What they do, why they do it, how they go about things, the reasons people act and react certain ways, the complexity of the different ways people act is something that is so interesting to me and I have always been interested to find out more! One of the topics of Sociology that I am looking forward to learning more about is Sociological Perspective. I want to gain a better understanding of how people’s actions and reactions are stemmed from the society in which they live. Does their position on the globe influence their behavior? Where people live and grew up makes a huge impact on their lives. We are programmed to be a certain way based on the culture we grew up in and in which we were raised in a particular area. The second topic I am looking forward to learning more about is Diversity of U.S families. I can’t wait to learn more about this because I want to know more about how different nationalities vary in how they raise their children, how in which they do it, and the rate in which they do it in. Every single family is different, but family styles vary from nation to nation, even when they are in the U.S. The differences in African-American families, Latino families and Caucasian families are so vastly different in so many ways that I am looking forward to gaining more insight on the diversity in all of the types of families the U.S has. Lastly, I look forward to learning...

...hearing the word “learning”, what comes to mind? The most important aspect of learning is taking in the world around you and connecting it to what you are experiencing. In order to understand what you are experiencing, you have to make sense of it. Learning involves using your critical thinking skills to respond appropriately to any workplace task, online assignment, or opportunity to speak publicly. College is learning how to learn and how your mind works so you can take that understanding with you to a career you desire. Do not forget that the basic steps of learning is a gathering information and storing it in your memory for convenient use. As I look back to my definition of learning, it sort of compares to what learning is. I had a belief that learning was putting your mind and effort into trying to understand life itself, along with everything around us. After taking Exp. 105, I have discovered that there is more to learning. From using your critical thinking skills when responding to your online assignments, how important your learning patterns are, to making sense of what you experience in order to understand what you learn. The Learning Connections Inventory (LCI) is a set of terms used to describe your learning processes accurately and thoroughly. There are four learning patterns which are Sequence, Precision, Technical Reasoning, and Confluence. By using Sequence (31) as my Use First, I strive on clear directions when completing any assignment. I use Precision (26) and Technical...

Addressing the Audience

...Subject: Career Services Awareness I am writing you because XX Community College has an excellent reputation that extends far beyond the boundaries of our community. As a recent graduate, I did not learn about Career Services or its many benefits until my last semester as a student. Consequently, I, like most students who attend XX Community College, was unable to take advantage of the opportunities available. I am bothered knowing that there is no current method in place to inform students that the Career Services Center exists. I find this to be an acute issue that calls for immediate attention. Exclusively relying on a small number of individuals who possess information about the location of the Career Services Center and its advantages is a great disservice to both the student body as well as the surrounding community. I did not discover Career Services until I was tasked to find what benefits, if any, were available for students majoring in Information/Engineering Technology, as part of a class project. An extensive fact finding process which included: personal observation, random surveys, document review, online questionnaires, and face-to-face interviews, enhanced the theory that most students are completely unaware of the many benefits available to them. This is upsetting because there are countless individuals who want to learn and become an asset to our community while attending school. The opportunities to discover possible employment, enhance resume building...

...Phoenix program I was unemployed and actively seeking re-employment. Prior to losing my job I was running an exceptional sports program at one of our organizations premier facilities in a very affluent community. However, I was feeling as though I had hit a plateau in my career and professional development due to not having my degree. The next areas of professional growth for me in my field involve becoming an Executive Director or an Association Youth Sports Director, but both of these positions require me to possess a degree. Not having my degree completely removed these career options from my reach and left me trapped in a dead position without much room for future upward growth or mobility. I felt that finding time to continue my education and secure my degree was not an option. Continuing my education was very important for my personal growth and development. Experiencing the rewards of learning both as a student and as certified CPR and Lifeguard instructor of several years I feel strongly about the role that learning plays in an individual’s development. Learning new things helps to keep individuals connected and engaged in the world around us and adds understanding and value to our lives. Learning impacts every part of who we are as human beings and increases the potential for who we can become by challenging and expanding what we know or thought we knew about the world around us. ...------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- Personal Reflection on Northcenteral's Mission, Vision, and Values Statements "Do what is right, though the world may perish" (Kant, 2012). That was the feelings by one of the worlds foremost experts on the subject of Ethics, Immanuel Kant. To Kant, something was either wrong or right; there were no in-between or grey areas. This type of wrong or right thinking is a far cry from today's standard college student's ethic which is based on postmodern thought. In postmodernism there are no absolutes; wrong or right is arbitrary and your truth may very well not be my truth. With postmodernism as mainstream as it is on campus. It is no wonder colleges and universities are plagued by the problem of academic honesty (Sidorkin, 2011). No matter what one's personal ethic may be. It is imperative one adopt Kant's view when dealing with Northcenteral's Mission, Vision, and Values Statements. Thus, Kant's ethic will be the baseline I use when reflecting on Northcentral's Mission, Vision, and Values Statements. Mission Northcentral's Mission Statement is what sets it apart from its colleagues. While most every college and university strives to achieve a high amount of professionalism and academic achievement few find this success. This is...

I have look at so many colleges and I have to narrow down my choices. After having three colleges on my list, I have narrowed it down to one, and I decided to narrow it down to The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. I want to attend the University Of Arkansas at Pine Bluff because, a visitor from the college comes to visit Normandy and I was ecstatic by his presentation. After the presentation, I knew that the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was the college for me. I have always wanted to attend a HBCU (historically black college or university). I plan to visit the campus during my winter break to get the feel of the college and see how the atmosphere was. Before I decide to go see the college, I am going to do my research on it and get a background check to be sure. From the research, I do on the college. I hope it is interesting because I am so anxious to choose the college I am going to and start my life on my own. MY RESEARCH PROCESS I started my research process by going straight to the online website because I believed that would have the most information. I also talked to one of the admission officers (Whimper C., Personal Communication RE: Information on UABP, E-mail to the author, 1 Oct 2011) who visited Normandy...
