1. Who do you know is most likely to believe fake news? Why do you think these people are more likely to believe fake news?
I find that the generation or age group who are most likely to believe fake news would be those who are now in their sixties to early seventies. These people grew up in a time that news stories and journalism were all about telling the truth. Back when things like Watergate happened, the real reporters were all about telling all of the facts in the case. They took time to verify sources and print a majority of truth. At that same time, the majority of other events of the nation and the world were reported truthfully. I feel that this leads the people of this age-group to believe the things reported today, no matter …show more content…
Interest groups can do good things if it’s really the people they want to represent and not their own pocketbook. Sometimes the group has to be there to fight for a change or fight for funding for things such as cancer research and stricter laws on sex trafficking but it has become more of a whoever provides the best gift to the elected official gets their way. We often see that those with the deepest pockets have their own agenda and because they have the resources and the money, they can spend time in Washington among all the law makers. They have access to the most powerful people in our nation and are able to use their influence to have laws passed and contracts signed. Where the everyday citizen fighting for change doesn’t have that opportunity because they don’t have the money. We hear more about the groups with the most money rather than the one with the best cause. Special interest groups spend a lot of time and money researching their view but this can lead to a bias on their part. They’ve researched the side they want to promote and sometimes it’s just an idea as in the case of the NRA. They’re more about ideology, a belief in the second amendment that we have the right to bear arms and so its’ members have such strong opinions on this right that their words and votes mean more to the politicians. “Politicians who come from communities with relatively high gun ownership, particularly from those in the South and Midwest, where Americans are most likely to own guns, are going to be hard-pressed to go against the NRA.” (Cost, Jay. “The NRA Is Not Your Typical Interest Group.” National Review, National Review, 26 Feb. 2018, www.nationalreview.com/2018/02/nra-members-gun-owners-make-powerful-voting-bloc-motivated-by-ideology/.) What Is Human Nature Arguable?

...Coined by U.S. President Donald Trump, an online investigation into “fake news” determined “fake news” spreads faster than “real news”. Sinan Aral, co-author of the paper explains, “We have a very strong conclusion that the spread of falsity is outpacing the truth because human beings are more likely to retweet false than true news,” which was determined by investigating the sharing of more than 100,000 news stories on Twitter (Coldewey). According to this article, people like to share and spread “fake news”, including scandal, lies, and deceit, rather than “real news”. This proves that humans are more evil-natured due to the desire to gossip and scandals. In fact, it is later stated in the article that there is more of a bias to share negative news rather than positive news. The view of a more evil-natured human was originally driven by 16th-century philosopher Thomas Hobbes. Credited with the famous quote “nasty, brutish, and short”, Hobbes also stated, “We are all basically selfish, driven by fear of death and the hope of personal gain. All of us seek power over others, whether we realize this or not,” which is clearly a very pessimistic view of human nature...

Sex Trafficking and Slavery in the United States

...hours. Exhausted and confused, she was finally taken to an apartment 25 miles from her home. She said one of her captors put a gun to her head”…” Debbie said she was then drugged by her captors and other men were brought into the room, where she was gang raped.” (Teen Girls’ Stories of Sex Trafficking in U.S.). Many Americans hear stories all the time of abduction and sexual slavery all around the world. They feel like something should be done about this injustice but since the acts are happening outside the country they feel disconnected. Unfortunately, most Americans are not as far from this problem as they would like to believe. Sex trafficking happens at an alarming rate in America. Between the years 1996-2000, America had the highest number of victims trafficked illegally into the country (Cullen-Dupont 44). With this high level of trafficking going on, why are many Americans unaware of this issue? They most likely believe that only foreign victims are trafficked into slavery, but the Texas Attorney General states that an epidemic exists of domestic women being forced into sexual slavery as well (Bellows 489). Debbie was an American born citizen and she was kidnapped at the age of fifteen off her own driveway. A casual friend called Debbie to meet up and when she arrived two men abducted her in front of her house, her mother was sitting in their family room completely unaware (Teen Girls’ Stories of Sex Trafficking in U.S.). How then were Debbie and other similar victims...

Social Media

...Social Media Social media has become more popular and users have expanded from teens to young adults and now even people over the age of 50. However, many people are still unsure if social media is a good or bad thing, as some people think it’s amazing, whereas others are worried about the impact it has on people’s lives. Personally I feel that it is a good thing; however, after researching this topic, it has been brought into extreme clarity for me that actually there is a rather dark side to these networking sites. Firstly, social media is a great way to boost your confidence, allowing people who are rather shy to express themselves without human interaction. As a result of this, obviously when there is no human interaction, it makes it rather easy to be negative towards another person. One of the main reasons that people may say something negative or nasty towards someone else on social media is because you can’t see the reaction of the person; the fact that you are sitting behind a device of some sort blocks out the thought that on the other side is a real person with real thoughts and feelings and the fact that you don’t see the other person eye to eye and face to face means that, when someone does say something mean or negative towards another person, it creates the illusion that it isn’t really happening. In addition to this, social networking allows people to communicate quickly and also helps people practise and improve their social skills (which is always a good...

Tv Violence and the Future of Our Children

...Children In recent years, the news has seemed to mimic violence that appears in television and in movies. Several incidents support the majority of people's assumption that TV violence effects a child's behavior in many ways. A child's judgment is hurt badly by viewing TV violence, which can have some serious long-term effects. First of all, when children see characters on TV or in movies triumph by using physical force, they begin to see violence as an acceptable way of resolving conflicts. As a result, children use physical or verbal abuse toward others on the playground or at school. Some parents often worry that their children will not fit in with their friends if they do not watch popular children's television programs. The same 20-year research tell us that children who watch more violent television are actually rated more poorly by their peers. Also, according to Dr. Jeanne Beckman, children who spend more time watching violent TV programming are rated more poorly by their teachers, their peers, have few problem-solving skills, and are more likely to get into trouble with the law as teenagers and young adults. Take for instance the young boy who opened fire at his school in Pearl, Mississippi. The movie the Basketball Diaries had the most effect on this boy. Children who view too much media violence may have more difficulty getting along with others. If children do not see acts of kindness between other children and adults, they are less likely to be kind, or resolve their...

Even though both groups of students should have been able to count (objective task) the same amount of infractions made by each team shortly after watching...

Consumer Bill Of Rights: The Right To Consumer Education

...We are at a point in history where fake news is quickly becoming a crisis. Even though I believe that false information should be regulated to prevent the propagation of disinformation, the government is responsible for educating its citizens about persuasive techniques and advertising. The Consumer Bill of Rights asserts the people’s right to be informed and their right to consumer education. Public opinion must be logical in order for us to properly evaluate our Democracy. Our current educational system produces uneducated citizens who are unprepared to analyze persuasive messages in such a logical manner. The government is responsible for educating its citizens about persuasive techniques and advertising because the Consumer Bill of Rights asserts the people’s right to be informed and their right to consumer education. President John F. Kennedy introduced the Consumer Bill of Rights in 1962. This legislation asserts that the American people have four fundamental consumer rights: the right to safety, the right to choose, the right to be heard, and the right to be informed. ...risk of them getting into an accident. Since most teenagers are in a phase of developing their brain, they are more likely to make reckless decisions in general, with addition of alcohol those decisions can be very serious and deadly. That is why it is important for teenager to wait until they are 21 to drink, so they will more likely to make appropriate decisions and understand the consequence better.
