Pacifism can usually be used to solve major disputes, but violence is the most common approach taken by many people. George Orwell’s 1984 accentuates the idea that exposing children to violence at a young age can create desensitized and bellicose societies. In Oceana, the party emphasizes the fact that war is to be considered peace and children are thought to believe this from their birth. In fact, Mrs. Parsons claims that her children are “‘disappointed because they couldn’t go to see the hanging’” (Orwell 23).
