Poverty can be described as the lack of a certain amount of material possessions or money. Absolute poverty is described as the deprivation of basic human needs, such as food water sanitation, clothing, shelter, health care or education. Poverty is caused by several issues affecting Americans in the United States such as food insecurity, high unemployment rate, limited housing, lack of education, etc. The US Census Bureau reported that in November 2013 more than 16% of the population lived in poverty. Studies show that children living in poverty is continuously growing. Poverty has decreased amongst blacks but has increased in the hispanics community. This will allow children to gain the knowledge and life skills they need to reach their full potential. They can advocate to help train teachers, get new schools built and the proper supplies to teach and break down barriers that may prevent a child from attending school. Access to health care will also be beneficial. Social workers could advocate for communities to build health clinics, train health care workers properly and invest in the proper equipment and medication so that people can grow healthy. Water and Sanitation are very essential to not only Americans but people around the world. Social workers can advocate for proper water community points which will help establish clean work for people all over the world. Economic Security is very important, training people living in poverty to gain the proper skills and knowledge they will need to secure a livelihood and be able to support their families. Lastly, child participation is important. Getting children to learn about there rights and take active roles in their community will provide them the knowledge to express there views and make decisions that will help shape their future and influence people around
