...The Romance Genre One of the most common themes in films is love. In Bordwell and Thompson’s study The Classical Hollywood Cinema (1998), they calculated that 85 percent of Hollywood films has romance as their main plot. Which means in most Hollywood films, Romantic Love is a major concern. Contemporary American cinema still uses the same formal in romance films. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl and then boy gets girl in the end. Bellour a film critic, identifies this convention as pattern that constitutes classical Hollywood cinema as a whole (“Alternation” 88). This illustrates that Hollywood often portrays and idealized version of love. Hollywood’s emphasis on romantic love and courtship, is almost like a reflection of America’s commercial enterprise. Producing movies only for mass entertainment purposes. We happen to live in society in which the choice of partners and marriages completely free. Although Pierre Bourdieu (1990) has argued that our relationships and marriage patterns have been heavy influenced by cultural institutions. As Hollywood film is particularly addressed to young people, film can be seen as an institution that has influenced their formation of ‘habitus’ or their behaviour towards courtship. Popular romantic films are often provocative and complex. They tell us about ourselves as men and women. Sexual desire, love, relationships and our fallibilities and fears. They show us how our beliefs, what we should think and how we should behave. They...

...Kyle Moore Interpersonal Communication 4/24/13 When Harry Met Sally After viewing this film I knew there were multiple different aspects within the dialog. The interaction between these two over many years made it possible for them to go from complete strangers to falling in love. It didn’t happen overnight and there many different actions that lead them to realize that they were destined for each other. One of the most interesting aspects I found deals with the social penetration model. When they first meet to take the road trip they only knew each other through mutual friends so needless to say it was a little awkward at first but throughout the story they begin to come closer and closer together. Even though it took a while for Sally to open up she eventually showed a more open and emotional side to Harry which led them to sleep together for the first time. Before that happened most of the conversations were just small talk and Harry asking Sally about her sex life. I thought Harry to be physically attracted to her from the begging but as he states, “Girls and guys can’t be friends.” His theory has to do with physical attraction and the fact that all men will want to be sexually active or at least have it in the back of their mind if they are close acquaintances with an attractive female. From the beginning Sally’s self-monitoring was very high and she didn’t really tell Harry anything to personal. She was defensive and had a very straight forward personality. As the...

...way”, is the main theme of the movie “When Harry met Sally”. The script is a good example of the interpersonal communication ten stage model by Mark Knapp. This developmental model entails the stages of a relationship from it’s infancy to an ending. In the movie we can clearly identify all ten stages of this model. Stage # 1 - Initiating According to the Knapp model, the beginning of every relationship—especially an intimate, romantic or close friendship—begins with the initiation stage. This stage involves the initial contact with another person. In the movie the stage of initiation begins when Harry and Sally meet for the first time and prepare to share a day travelling together in Sally’s car from Chicago to New York City. During this stage Harry and Sally are introduced by Harry’s girlfriend and begin their trip. Stage # 2 - Experimenting The second stage of the Knapp model, experimentation, is usually focused on time spent between people getting acquainted. During this stage people usually making “small talk” and it helps prepare the stage for future communication and interaction. In the movie, the second stage begins shortly after they begin their long trip when Harry asks Sally “why don’t you tell me the story of your life?” There is lot’s of small talk and dialog; talking about happiness and who is more prepared to face death, to analyzing and interrelating to the characters of the movie Casablanca. It is clear that Harry is more experienced and uses his communication...

...For example, one of the common recurring themes is underscored by Harry in the beginning when he explains to Sally “that true friendship is impossible between a man and a woman, because the issue of sex always gets in the way.” In most movies, the tension felt between two opposing sexes is eventually released as a misunderstood sexual passion for the other in one form or another. However, this is delayed for most the movie until Sally has an emotional breakdown and cries into Harry’s arm before later proceeding to have sex with him. In fact, throughout the film Sally and Harry carry a love/hate relationship for one another. They are at each other’s throats in the beginning of the film, but as they continue to bump into each other and learn...

...Name Instructor Course Date Love Types Introduction Love styles are modes of operation that show the various ways in which people love. John Lee captured these types of love in 1973 in his classic book titled ‘Colors of Love’. There are six types of love, they include; Eros, Ludus, Storge, Mania, Pragma and Agape. This subject is very interesting and is often found in many films. When Harry met Sally and War of the Roses are two classic films that borrow heavily from love styles. When Harry met Sally is a 1989 film in relation to the creation of a relationship; it is a romantic comedy. The two main characters are friends for a period of twelve years before becoming lovers. The film raises the question, “can women and men ever just be friends?”. It also addresses many household concepts that are encountered in a relationship, this include; “transitional person” and” high maintenance” girlfriend. It entails storge, where the individuals involved first become friends before they become partners. War of the Roses is also a 1989 film on breaking down of a relationship. It is about a wealthy couple who seem to be in a perfect relationship until things begin to fall apart and a gruesome divorce battle takes the center stage. The relationship between the Roses also starts of as friendship. The divorce becomes outrageous and it gets out of hand as the couple goes as far as trying to kill each other. ...First of all, females in rom-coms come from similar backgrounds. When society thinks of rom-coms, they regularly come to a similar thought. For example, society consistently thinks about females in rom-coms working as a journalist. A recent article published by Mindy Kaling, explains how movies stereotype females. Mindy Kaling says, “If you think about the backstory of a typical mother character in a romantic comedy, you realize this: when “Mom” was an adolescent, the very week she started to menstruate she was impregnated with a baby who would grow up to be the movie’s likable brown-haired leading man” (Kaling). Mindy has a compelling argument about the way female characters are displayed in rom-coms. The movie industry creates females...

...When I was One-and-Twenty Summary Our speaker gets some advice from an older, wiser person: don't bank too much on love. Like any young person, he promptly ignores the advice. Did we mention that he's 21? Keep that in mind. It'll be important later. Flash forward: now he's 22. And as it turns out, the advice he got was pretty good. Love hurts. And we're not just quoting that '80s song. Line 1-2 When I was one-and-twenty I heard a wise man say, • Uh-oh. Any time a literary work starts out with a wise man's sayings, you just know that they're probably going to be ignored. If we listened to wise advisors, we wouldn't have any stories to tell. And poems are stories, after all. • So, we've got a young whippersnapper and his older mentor. Stay tuned, folks…. Lines 3-6 "Give crowns and pounds and guineas But not your heart away; Give pearls away and rubies But keep your fancy free." • Well, it turns out that love is worth more than gold. Or, er…the lack of love is worth more than gold. • Don't let the happy tone and snappy rhymes confuse you: this poem is about control. It turns love into an economic calculation, one which allows the "wise man" to balance feelings against more conventional forms of currency (crowns and pounds and guineas are, after all, the big guns of the U.K.'s monetary system). As it turns out, the heart is more valuable than money – which is precisely why the speaker's buddy thinks that it should remain soundly within his control. • Of course, this...

...Elements of Design ENG 225 Shelly David Instructor Jane Doe October 8th, 2012 Elements of Design Film production is very interesting when it is broken down into the different categories. It takes a great deal of people working together to complete the production of any movie; the director, production designer, art director, and cinematographer are just a few. There are many technical terms that will be defined in this paper so that you can have a better understanding of what is being discussed. The mise en scène is the main point of this paper which is what is seen in a movie. I have chosen a clip from the movie Hitch. (movieclips.com, 2005, 4/8, Hitch) The elements necessary for a well-designed film are; the artist’s involved in the film’s production, lighting, setting, costuming, makeup, and hairstyle, these are all part of the mise en scène that is being covered. “Many people contribute to the creation of a film.” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011) We (the people and critics), the screenwriters, the actors, the cinematographers, the editors, and directors all play a very important role in the creation of a movie. The two most important to be discussed are the director and the art director, sometimes called the production designer. “The director is the person with the ultimate responsibility for the overall film.” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011) The art director or production designer is “the person who determines the staging requirements for a production...

Since the 1970s, statistical analysis has become an important part of courtroom discussions.1 Often, statistical evidence alone can provide sufficient grounds for the sentencing of a suspect. An understanding of statistical science is thus crucial for an analysis of many courtroom decisions. In this note, the use of data in court, data collection biases, requirements for evidence, and fallacious arguments will be discussed. There will...

...Wednesday, April 9, 2014 PSY/460 - WEEK ONE SHORT ANSWER Environmental psychology is likely to be a new field for you, although many of the concepts are probably familiar. Provide your own definition of the discipline. Discuss an important milestone or influence in the development of environmental psychology and provide reasoning as to why you chose this one. Environmental psychology is a branch of psychology that studies how the environment affects individuals, and vice-verse. There is a reciprocal relationship between people and the environment they live in, as they both affect each other. The relationship between nature and the human species has been an object of study for many decades, and understanding this relationship can help individuals learn about the importance of conserving and maintaining the world that supports them (Steg, 2013). The environment provides humans with food, water, air, and all the other necessities individuals need to survive, even if, in a world dominated by technology and progress, it is easy to forget that one way or another, everything we need to survive comes from the earth. Environmental psychology focuses not only on the physical influences humans and environment have on each other, but also in which ways nature affects individuals’ behaviors. One important aspect of this discipline is the belief that people’s behaviors are not determined solely by the environment (Steg, 2013). Most psychologists in this area believe in free will...
