The College Park Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is starting a new initiative this year which consist of a series of Allyship workshops! Members of the Activism Committee are putting together these workshops in order to help inform community members how to be allies to various marginalized communities. Our first workshop we will be holding is a White Allyship Workshop, which will be held on Monday, November 27, at 6-8pm.
We are reaching out to you because we would love for you to be a panelist for our workshop. You have either been an active member in the UMD community, have experience in activism, have knowledge concerning topics of African American History and/or race relations in the United States, and most importantly, have exhibited your ability to use your privilege to educate, protect, and/or resist!…show more content… The hope is to educate white students (especially those in leadership positions) who are willing to learn about their privilege and the power they hold when it comes to protecting marginalized communities; from learning how to recognize micro-aggressions to educating students on how their actions (or lack thereof) contributes to the racial climate on campus. Tackling popular topics as we go (ex. BLM, taking a knee during the anthem, the removal of confederate statues) we hope to create an educational and open environment for students who may be unfamiliar with these issues. Although this workshop won’t make everyone experts and a perfect ally, my hope is that this workshop will peak their interest and hopefully encourage students to want to become more
