Comparing and contrasting influence to face jug’s by different artists and potters from different time periods in history, helps us gain knowledge about the creative process of artists. The Black slaves made pottery because were not allowed to have tombstones so they would make face jugs and use it as grave markers. They had hidden meanings behind it. The white potter suffered economic depressions and they began making face jugs to earn money and prevent them from going out of business. Mitchell Grafton makes pottery by learning new techniques and he believes that there will be someone else to keep the tradition alive.
